Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua is a traditional industrial county, and there are many factories and some small and medium-sized enterprises. Lukang is Taiwan's strategic township with a history of 300 years, which is situated in Changhua County, northwest of Changhua Plain in Taiwan.

Lukang is located in the center of the western coast of Taiwan. Due to its good harbor conditions, it has become a distribution center in central Taiwan since the middle of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the three major sea ports in Taiwan. As time goes by, Lukang always tries to preserve the charm of the past. Gradually, through the preservation of the old streets and the maintenance of historical sites, the old streets and lanes of Lukang have become the spiritual destination for modern people to pursue the tradition.

2. Summary of Our Project

First, we searched the information about Wen Wu Temple, Lukang to understand the origins, and then came and visited Lukang Wen Wu Temple. Second, in interview we learned more about the historical allusions of Lukang Wen Wu Temple, and hoped to gain in-depth information by interview with the relatives of Jinshi, Yongjinshi, Wukui, and modern calligraphers. Besides, we also went to Wen Wu Temple to learn how to introduce its architectural features; and wanted to show them in front of tourists to make them know more about Wenwu Temple not only glance at it. Through data query, in-depth interviews and practice experience, we experienced many new things. We also deeply understood that the purpose of making Cyberfair project is not only to simply collect data, but also learn the knowledge not included in textbooks.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Each one has different skills such as writing, logic thinking and creation. Those who have good writing skills write well and logically. On the contrary, students who have poor writing and thinking abilities have encountered many problems in writing, such as: unorganized, insufficient contents, submission delay, etc. After discussion, the solution is: those who are good at writing provide guidance, the Chinese teacher is invited to revise the essays, and seek an advisor for help. In this way, we can improve our writing skills!

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Knowledge is power. We are getting stronger and stronger.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Changhua is a traditional industrial county, and there are many factories and some small and medium-sized enterprises. Lukang is Taiwan's strategic township with a history of 300 years, which is situated in Changhua County, northwest of Changhua Plain in Taiwan.

Lukang is located in the center of the western coast of Taiwan. Due to its good harbor conditions, it has become a distribution center in central Taiwan since the middle of the Qing Dynasty and is one of the three major sea ports in Taiwan,so we use Lukang historical sites as our theme. And we mainly introduce Wenwu Temple in Lukang. Our school is also in Lukang. Doing research in the local culture allows us to know more about our hometown. We went to Wen Wu Temple to learn how to introduce its architectural features; and wanted to show them in front of tourists to make them know more about Wenwu Temple not only glance at it.

Through data query, in-depth interviews and practice experience, we experienced many new things. We also deeply understood that the purpose of making Cyberfair project is not only to simply collect data, but also learn the knowledge not included in textbooks.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Our main network is provided by our school’s computer classroom. We used the classroom computers. In the project, there is a dedicated line which is connected to Google's Drive via Internet which provides various network services through the server. The network is smooth. Application of the technologies is more stable, faster, and safer, allowing us to collect and learn information at any time.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Because each student has different skills, they use different skills to contribute to the team. For example: Wan-lun's information skills are quite strong, and he is our team leader. She also contacted the interviewee by phone and email. She is very close and talkative,so the interviewee can talk to her happily.

In design of interview questions, we had clear goals. After design, we assumed 60% contents of one question can be answered. If over 60% contents of one question can be answered, this indicates that the question is feasible and the respondents can also give a generous response. In the interview, we should be aware that the interviewees may ask us back, so we should make full preparation.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through interviews with Wen Wu Temple, we have learned about the historical background of Wenkai Academy, Wen Temple and Wu Temple. The academy has more than 20,000 books and 300,000 volumes. It cultivated 6 wenjinshi, 1 wujinshi, 16 juren and more than 100 xiucai, which is the cradle of ancient Lukang culture. We also put the web site we made on our school website, which allows all the people inside or outside the school to see our works and have a better understanding of the local culture of Lukang and Wen Wu Temple. Wen Wu Temple is an irreplaceable center of belief for local people. When each exam season comes, hard-working candidates will come here to pray for Wen-Chang Emperor's care. Wen Wu Temple is very important in the mind of the people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We visited and interviewed the descendants of many scholars, includingthe descendants of Wukui Chao-ching Hsu, Scholar Yu-Shu Huang,Scholar Shen-hsiu Wang,Scholar Lien-Shun Choun and Mr. Chih-Cheng Hsu's wife. They are very enthusiastic to provide the information and stories they know. This allows us to know the great achievements of many predecessors. If we wanted to design a good question, we must first search online or go to the library to borrow relevant books. These contents should include background, work content, etc. of the respondents so the questions should be related to interviewee. Imagined question may make the respondent feel that we do not respect him.

In design of interview questions, we should have clear goals. After design, we assumed 60% contents of one question can be answered. If over 60% contents of one question can be answered, this indicates that the question is feasible and the respondents can also give a generous response. In the interview, we should be aware that the interviewees may ask us back, so we should make full preparation, otherwise it will be embarrassed on that day!
