Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Yilan is situated at northeastern of Taiwan, which has beautiful mountains, delicious water and fresh air. Yilan County Government puts emphasis on traditional crafts and cultural asset preservation, taking advantage of local cultural resources to promote Yilan and stimulate sightseeing. After Hsuehshan Tunnel opened in 2006, it improved the traffic in Yilan. It not only facilitated the east region of Taiwan but also form one-day living circle between Yilan and Taipei. Therefore, Yilan is also called Taipei’s back garden. Taiwan’s traditional crafts root in the needs of everyday living. The real value of traditional crafts is “people”. Ms. Chen Hueimei, first preserver of entwining art, received approval from the Ministry of Culture, starting her career in National Center for Traditional Arts. Due to the promise and persistence of Mrs. Hsieh Chen Aiyu, Chen devotes to the preservation and promotion. She not only arouses the government’s notice but also instructs the youth, writes books and establishes the Chinese Entwining Art Association. She does a lot to the international interaction. She makes the entwining art have a new image and new face, and pushes it into the international platform.

2. Summary of Our Project

What is twined flower? Twined flower is a special handicraft in the folk society of Taiwan. Each bride must wear it when she is going to marry. What is “spring flower”? The system of entwining art can be categorized: the Minnan and the Hakka. Each region has developed its own spring flower with distinct features by different geographic location and life culture. The Minnan calls it “spring flower”. It is in a size of about 3 cm. However, the youth think that it is a troublesome tradition, which contains the background of story. The story is about love and youth that the elder want to have. The westerners use “ring” to represent lifetime protection and promise, which symbolizes forever love. The Chinese use “spring flower” to symbolize the connection and blessing between the elder and the youth. The spring flower worn on the head symbolizes luck and blessing. However, the industry era makes plastic spring flower boom. This makes the entwining art which has Taiwan traditional color and delicate folk art decline. With the rise of post modernism, people focus on customization and make the entwining art reappear. In terms of the project, we hope to give spring flower a new mark. The new generation reproduces the entanglement of flowers through the inheritance, and at the same time, the twined flowers are pushed to the international market through the rising rookies, so that the traditional entwining art is once again seen by the world, which in turn drives the popularization of the international “tradition and fashion aesthetics”.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

The Internet speed (optical fiber) in our school is quite fast. The computer lab we utilize is on the 1st to 8th floor in the newly -built building. There are 15 computer labs. We surf the internet by Cable Modem or ADSL at home. We discuss the project with classmates and teachers by LINE ,Google Classroom and Facebook.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the process of project, we meet some problems. But we learn the skills to solve them. Problems we meet are mentioned below: (1)Theme discussion: In the beginning, members have different ideas about the theme. We submit many different themes to discuss. However, we have no consensus. At last, we talk to the instructors again and again. In order to match the theme of CyberFair, we make a decision to focus on the theme about the preservation and innovation of traditional crafts. Then we start to collect the materials. (2)Information collection: In the beginning, we are not familiar with the theme. When we gather information, we often gather the irrelevant one. It causes some mistakes and wastes time. Through discussion with teachers and visiting Lin Pei Ying’s exhibition and Ms. Chen Hueimei’s spring flower workshop, we have clear directions and goals of the project. (3)The skills of making the website: During the process of making the website, we meet some difficulties. Members discuss the difficulties and find the solution or alternative. We also ask instructors to solve the problems we meet to make the process go smoothly. (4)Schedule control and teamwork: In studying the project, we only use leisure time to discuss and arrange the visit on holidays because we have the normal classes and we are from different grades and classes. In the middle of the study, we meet the final exam. Therefore, we just sacrifice our sleep and take advantage of time to finish our own parts. We learn the importance and ways to finish our project because someone who is not responsible for the project will affect other members.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

During these months, we learn the importance of teamwork. The members’ abilities are different. In order to finish the project on time, we help each other. This is the lesson we learn. Besides, thanks to the instructors, when we have some problems on collecting information, instructors lead us to think about the direction of it. We refer to others’ opinions and amend our deficiency to make the project perfect. During the process, we visit entwining art, interview and DIY. We also pay a visit to the preserver of entwining art, Chen Huei-mei, in Yilan. We realize the importance of thinking of its source. Without her persistence and inheritance, and the junior’s innovation, entwining art can’t be spread out today. Many people innovate and promote entwining art, so we can see the beauty of traditional culture. Therefore, through this website, we want people around the world to see the entwining art.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We use what we had learned from school like related knowledge and computer skills to make the project. We also use many kinds of software to finish the website page and HTML links, so the project can have more special features. (1)Phone, LINE app, Facebook, Cloud Service: We use related communicating equipment to connect team members or store the data we got in cloud drive, Facebook, so we can look up or modify document. (2)Computer labs, Audio-visual classrooms: When we make the project or have meetings, we use computer labs or other places at school to discuss the theme and modify the document. And then we use computer to finish project webpage fast. (3)Smart phones, digital cameras: We use smart phones, digital cameras to keep every moment when we have fieldwork. We can keep some important information and read it repeatedly to increase the accuracy when we arrange it. Besides, we also take photos, camcorder of the interview to make webpage and share with team members. (4)Scanners: We use scanners to input the data to computer. Then we make the information we collect from books or reports more complete. (5)Computer software and program: We use software and program we learn from school to reorganize and arrange the information and contents and make this project. Through Microsoft Office, we make the contents of webpage and frame diagram. Through Photoshop, Illustrator and many other Image processing software to finish our photos. Through APP to make video,Dreamweaver to make webpage and jQuery to increase the diversity of the project webpage, it becomes more vivid. (6)Internet browser: We collect related reports and videos from the Internet. Then we make use of the internet browser to exam the webpage we design.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Through participating in the project contest, we learn how to face the problems and solve the problems as a team. (1)Connect with the project class: We connect the project with the multimedia design. We use the software we learn to make the welcome webpage. We use various functions we learn in webpage design to make the webpage vivid. We discuss the expression of the content and make it go more smoothly. (2)The combination of Internet technology and knowledge application: With the advanced Internet technology, collecting the information is more convenient and easy. We make the information more complete. We have to be aware of the intellectual property when we get the Internet information. (3)The Integration of professional skills: Using the professional skills we learn at school makes the material collection more rapid. We use Photoshop to make the pictures and photos more vivid. (4)The ability of teamwork, division of labor and integration: Each member is responsible for his own task. And then combine the material, discuss with each other, and add the completeness of the project. (5)The promotion of humanity: Practical visit and interview makes the team understand the history and content of spring flower. We understand that more people are striving for the perseveration and innovation. Its history, culture and art value are worthy to be discussed. The project needs to collect materials and read materials. When the information is acquired, the word modification ability is improved, too. This makes the project more clearly. (6)Network and tradition are together: Due to the popularity of Internet technology, team members can discuss the problems at any time. But, it cannot replace the traditional way of face to face. As soon as we find the problems, we can solve it at once and get more interaction.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

(1) Connect Internet with spring flower: From Internet, books, journal, we realize the history and art of spring flower, such as process and inheritance. We also learn the process of making spring flower from YouTube. Further, we have a more efficient study on the project and have a good interaction with the different geographic locations. (2) Establish a Facebook of Spring flower: We post the materials we collect, project content, reflections, photos of the meeting to Facebook. (3) Visit exhibitions and have a DIY experience: Through visiting exhibitions and DIY, we discuss the topic of spring flower with amateurs, and learn more relative stories about spring flower. And then, we share learning experience and reflections. (4) Step on the journey of finding roots and seeking bless on spring flower: We visit the preserver of the intangible cultural heritage in the entwining art. We clearly understand the history and inheritance of spring flower. From it, we realize the hardship of the entwining art of being preserved and promoted. (5) Make the project homepage: We make the two homepages of “Blessing on fingertips - the craft of Twined Flower” and “Blooming of Twined Flower-A Splendid Revival of Spring Flower”, which tells about the entwining art. We let more people know spring flower and love the traditional culture of entwining art which is worthy to be preserved. This increases the innovation and value of this local cultural art.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The project is an unprecedented experience for us. Since we were children, we were taken care of by our parents. Now we grow up and are able to undertake the task alone. We can look for the materials on our own and participate in the lecture and DIY of entwining art. We even contact with the seniors we don’t know, make a telephone interview and arrange time for an appointment. During the process, we feel grateful and appreciated. Thanks for parents’ breeding. Thanks for the predecessors of spring flower we visited. Thanks for the people who give us help, opinions and support. During the course of the project, the biggest challenge is that we get the authorization. Because of the opposite’s caution and precision, we get the authorization through tough endeavors. This makes us learn nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it. Thanks for the team who gives us support and affirmation. In the project, we just focus on the entwining art. We hope this move can make more people involve in entwining art. To learn the traditional art and to promote the cultural inheritance is our hope and vision.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the course of the project, we cite the senior’s articles. Therefore, respecting the intellectual property and quotation is very important. (1)Written materials: The source of written materials comes from books, essays, journals and Internet. We organize the materials and present them after modification. When we quote the materials, we can affix the source. (2)Pictures: Some pictures are taken by the team members, and others are copied by the book and essay. While using them, we affix the source. The team will get the authorization from the author. In the course of the special research, we would like to thank the authorized technicians Chen Huimei, Zeng Guofan, Lin Peiying and Chen Xianglin for their authorization and assistance. Let us obtain valuable historical materials about the flower-wrapped craftsmanship and pictures of exquisite works.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

(1)Finding: In the thesis, we discover that entwining art has been promoting for a long time. However, only the elders know the spring flower and the youth have no idea about it. The youth think that spring flower is the plastic flower on the rice cake during the Chinese New Year. We hope that we can make more people know the value and the cultural meaning of the traditional entwining art. (2)Lesson: We didn’t look for the material in detail during the process. It makes us find the irrelevant materials toward the topic. It not only takes a lot of time but also makes instructors feel troubled while reading materials. Instructors didn’t know which part is to be discussed. Therefore, we have to read the whole article before collecting materials, and to pick the better descriptions. (3)Surprise: On our way to visit Ms. Chen Hueimei’s “spring flower” workshop in Wujie, we met a couple in the wedding ceremony. We found that a woman wore a plastic spring flower. Then we stepped forward and asked her. She is a matchmaker wearing the “plum blossom” spring flower on her head. On seeing this, we felt novelty, delighted and surprised. By means of the opportunity, we promote Ms. Chen Hueimei’s handmade spring flower.
