Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Changhua, is a place where the early Buma flourished. However, with the changing times, fewer and fewer people know the Buma Act. In this study, we learned from some written materials combined with visits to seniors in Shuiwei Village of State Township and Haifeng Village of Tianwei Township, both still maintained the Buma culture. To better understand the current development of the Buma in Changhua County, we interviewed the two communities separately and hoped that more people could learn more about the culture and importance of Buma.

2. Summary of Our Project

Research Topic:The Buma historical evolution and status quo in Changhua County with in-depth case study on Shuimei Village and Tianwei Haifeng village. Research Objective:Buma has gradually declined over the years with fewer people who will perform Buma. We hope that with this study, we can bring awareness to the people on the precious traditional art of Buma.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Study time is not easy to arrange.(Use holidays or after school time for team discussions.) 2.Data is not easy to collect. No experience creating websites. Making web pages requires some software skills. We are all first to use web authoring software, so we used after class and holiday times and asked a classmate’s elder sister to teach us how to use the software.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have learnt a lot from the Cyber Expo. In addition to teamwork, division of labor and cooperation, we also gained a lot of knowledge about the Buma Act. Watching the older generation explaining the knowledge about the Buma Act, bring lights into their eyes, which led us to think that the inheritance of traditional arts and crafts is also very important. Apart from Buma, Taiwan also has many traditional skills that are worth inheriting but each at the risk of disappearing because no one is pursuing to learn about them. It is nice to see that some traditional skills have emerged again through the efforts of people from all walks of life. In fact, each place has its own different local culture which is worth for us to understand and learn.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This special topic research project is combined with the nine year national education curriculum:To join the arts and humanities curriculum, and gives us a better understanding of Taiwan's traditional folklore through the use of the Buma Act. The Cyber Expo also makes us understanding teamwork. Whether it is to discuss, interview, or make web pages, etc., teamwork is the key to get things completed. Therefore we are very pleased to participate in this expo.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

This is our first time participating in the Cyber Expo. During the interviews, we met older people who not only share their Buma experience with us, but also share a lot of life experiences along the way. While we were interviewing, we also experienced Buma, it was really tiring! Perhaps that is the reason for the decline of Buma! With the use of electronic floats in the recent days have resulted in the traditional acts to gradually decline or even disappear completely. Under the efforts of some people, they are bring awareness back to the world.
