Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is located in divergent boundaries where there is range of mountains and the trees are luxuriant and green. The Tropic of Cancer stretches across the east and west and the climate is clearly distinct in the 4 seasons. Thus, there are the diverse species and unique natural resources to make the world surprised. Changhua County is the smallest in area in Taiwan Island and it enjoys the title of “Taiwan’s Rice Barn

2. Summary of Our Project

Our school is next to the mountains and near the rivers and is surrounded by Bagua Plateau and Babao irrigation canal to form the learning environment centering the nature. In the mountain forest near the school dorm, we can often see the funny Formosan macaque group go downhill and find the food. A group of students whose Chinese zodiac animal is monkey gradually become interested in them, especially Formosan macaque belongs to the endemic species of Taiwan and has the regional uniqueness.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

During the process of monographic study, we firstly met the problem of theme selection. In the beginning, it was designed that the famous Luo River Inkstone in Ershui is the research emphasis. But in the course of data collection, we found that this theme had been done by elementary school group. Therefore, after the group discussion, we decided to give up and start again. During the process of looking for the new research theme, we could not reach consensus and the team members began to have the differences in the opinions. Some team members thought that we can do it better even if it has been previously done. But someone holds the opposite opinion, thinking that the new research theme can present a new appearance and the possibility to win the prize is higher. Therefore, how to integrate the group opinion has always been one of the most important topics in the team cooperation.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We really harvest a lot through participating in this Cyberfair project and especially we have a deeper understanding of Formosan macaque; during the data collection and interview, we have found that many people in Taiwan not only like Formosan macaque but also are willing to spend money and time and make efforts to take care of them, so we admire them from the bottom of heart.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the course of monographic study, we try applying special medium (stone) to draw nifty and cute macapue appearance so as to integrate the artistic creation into academic research and enrich the webpage contents. In the subunit - public art, the artistic devices in our school and community are combined to know the artistic culture in our own life environment and experience the relationship between art and life.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

At present, optical network is used in our school, which is also required by the electronization of teaching and administration. Besides, Linux server provides web DNS, FTP and other various network services. In terms of hardware, there are 2 sets of desktop computers in Student Affairs Office and they can use the school network and connect the printer. In the office of academic affairs, many notebooks, DVs, digital cameras, recorder pens, etc. are provided, so that we can use these hardware and software facilities to collect and record the data during the process of monographic study. There are 30 sets desktop computers in the computer room and they are used for typewriting and data integration. In terms of software, Word document is used, the Google Drive is used for storage and sharing, EXCEL is used for the production and analysis of data statistical chart and Namo Web Editor is used for webpage making.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through participating in Cyberfair, we have transmitted the concept of Formosan macaque conservation to every corner of the world and promote the concept of Formosan macaque conservation to the conservation of other animals through the powerful strength of the network. In Taiwan, we adopted questionnaire survey and field advocacy in the class to make use of interesting slogan and cartoon to share the practice of conserving the Formosan macaque. Also, we shot the skit among the community residents and exchange the concept of Formosan macaque conservation.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After knowing that the Formosan macaque conservation is downgraded, we began to understand how Formosan macaque (it is the endemic species in Taiwan) ends up with the terrible fate. Ultimately, is the conflict between human and Formosan macaque caused by the fact that too many Formosan macaques endanger the human? Can this reason be accepted? Every why has a wherefore. If humans do not have overdevelopment to disturb Formosan macaque’s habitat and migration path, there will not be bubbling with the Formosan macaque disasters occurring in recent years. They are just animals. Food is the paramount necessity of the people and food is also essential to Formosan macaque. We’d like to know whether Formosan macaque’s behavior to fight for food should be treated by empathy.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Community resident provided the relevant data and assisted with the completion of drama shooting.
