Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Haishiwan of Honggu District is on western outskirts of Lanzhou City, is named for Hongguchuan in the eastern Xiangtangxia. Since the establishment of Honggu District in 1960, the area covers 567.66 sq kilometers, has a population of 140,000 people, about 90,000 of whom are urban, about 40,000 of whom are rural, there are 18 ethnic minority groups including Hus, Mans, Mongolians and Tibetans. Under the jurisdiction of Haishiwan Townp, it has one township,3 towns and 3 streets, 38 villages, 18 communities. The district seat of Haishiwan is the homeland of “Mamenchisaurus”.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are some enterprises in the area belonged to Yaojie Coal and electricity company and a number of large enterprises and joint-stock company Hengyuan ferrochrome companies inHonggu District, Lanzhou City, two national reserves, and also there are southern Yaohaishiwan, northern area 5 large-scale markets. In order to create a 'safe Lanzhou, harmonious Lanzhou',Honggu fire protection has become the god of rapid economic and social development of Honggu District and happy life of community resident. By introducing Honggu district fire protection, let more people understand Honggu’s fire, introduce fire protection common sense into factory, community and school, is deeply rooted in people's heart.Through our practical actions and suggestions, “Honggu fire protection” has been carried out for long time, effectively guarantee the local economic development, protect the safety and reduce the loss of property.

School has a network room with 100M optical fiber access, all offices and classrooms have been connected to the network, but the two computer rooms, one server (Windows2003 system), the teacher machine (windows XP system), the client 100 (windows XP), also have no internet access, besides the computer is backward in our school with bad allocation, the speed is slow. Because of 'insufficient' broadband speeds, we were online at two-weekend in school. Teacher instructed us to make webpage on information technique lesson.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Webpage-making competition had a huge demand for writing, but the mid-term exam is coming, the learning task is very nervous, it is usually difficult to squeeze time to write, so we had to write in the weekend time, sometimes carry out activities in the class time. The time is short, task is heavy. We had to accomplish tasks for a limited time and to investigate the fire information for fire safety training again and again in the school, to learn the knowledge of fire safety in the class. Due to the time, we have to through a simple analysis and discussion, finally, we determined the research subject -- 'red fire protection'

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In our daily life, we must enhance awareness of fire protection, improve the ability to protectourselves from harm in times of distress. In the long history of human use of fire, fire brings us benefits, careless will make everything come to nothing, don't let down. As a high school student, I call for everyone to pay attention to fire prevention knowledge, to prevent the occurrence of fire.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The successful web site we made could hardly do without many people’s help. School leader, teachers and classmates gave us supports, some student’s parents involved in our activity and offered us help, fire men and fire-fighting equipment store owner have been very cooperative with us. It is because of these people to help, we can engage in to success.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

By introducing Honggu district fire protection, let more people understand Honggu’s fire. Through our practical actions and reasonable suggestions and practice, the fire protection of Honggu gets long-term and standard development, so it more effectively contributes to the development of the local fire safety. Everyone should play as a 'propagandist', to make better publicity for the fire protection of Honggu.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By study, we got know the Honggu’s fire situation and a lot of useful information, such as, we should know the fire control knowledge in our life, should know where fire extinguishers are in campus, should know and remember the right way to escape when a fire occurs, which you have not learned at school. We not only occupied ourselves with action, but also our campus and our life should be safe. 'Talk is talk, the result was nothing' is the truth which our everybody understood, so we learn from class with the practice. We should be more conscious on fire protection in the further studying, and learn more about that, try to contribute to Honggu’s Fire protection.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the study of “Honggu Fire Protection”project, we learned something about fire protection we did not know before, which including its establishing time, history and current status. Meanwhile, our research topic is closely linked to daily life, and learn more about fire-fighting measures, the use of equipment?We hope that more people are conscious on fire protection by our feature story and publicity, making every one live each day happy and safety.
