Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei is the capital city in Taiwan. Apart from department stores, skyscrapers and night clubs, there are many world-famous night markets in Taipei, too.The night markets play important roles in the lives of Taiwanese. They are a collection of street stalls, local food, as well as warm hospitality of Taiwanese. When the night falls, people go to the night markets with families and friends for meals, shopping, and erntertainment in delight. The night markets are definitely must-visit places to indulge yourself in delicious snacks. Besides, they are also good places to experience the local nightlife in Taipei. Therefore, the vitality of night markets not only makes Taipei more lively but also bring the culture of night markets to the international arena.

2. Summary of Our Project

Taiwan is famous for its night markets and the snacks in night markets are well-known around the world. In order to make foreigners learn more about Taiwan's culture of night markets, we choose it as our project's topic. In the project, we searched for the information through the Net and library to make an introduction of the development of Taiwan's night markets. In addition, we visited three night markets in Taipei, including Shilin night market, Monga night market and Linjiang Street night market. Each of them has its own styles and specialties. Hence, there are more detailed information about those night markets' history, stalls, as well as delicious snacks in our project. Moreover, we made the questionnaire to survey the customers' transportation to night markets, their opinion of night markets' culture, and so on. We hope that the foreigners can know more about Taipei's lively night markets by this website.

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We encountered some difficulities when doing this project. The biggest challenge we had to face was time limit. We had to translate our web page into English just in one week. Meanwhile, we had to made a balance between schoolwork and the project. To finish it on time, we arranged our schedule and made good use of the time. Simultaneously, we improved our English writing skills. CyberFair is a competition which requires teamwork. When it comes to doing the project, some always finished their work on schedule and put a lot of effort in it, while some had a passive attitude. With communication and negotiation, we reached a consensus and cooperated with one another.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We not only enhance our abilities to English writing but also gain an in-depth understanding of Taiwan night markets' culture during our participation in International School CyberFair.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

On the field of social studies, we searched for many information, made the project framework, as well as designed the questionnaire. On the field of language, we enhanced our capabilities of speaking, reading and writing in the process of interviews. On the field of Mathematics, we used Excel to analyze data and create graphics. On the field of integrated activities, we integrated the data and answers from the surveys and interviews. On the field of art, we learn how to draw and design through the software. On the field of computer science, we designed the web pages.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The roles we played were the cultural promotion ambassadors of Shilin night market, Monga night market and Linjiang Street night market in Taipei. As we interviewed the vendors, most of them were delighted that by doing this project, we could popularize the culture of night markets to the world. Besides, when doing on-site survey, we encountered some foreigners who were so passionate that they had several conversation with us. We told them that we were doing this project and made an introduction of night market's history and specialities to them. Then, they shared their feelings, imporessions and experiences with us. It's so-called people-to-peolpe diplomacy.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

First of all, we let more people know more about the history of the night markets. Before they head to the night markets, they can gain some information through this project we made so that going to night markets can be not only entertaining but also educational. People can understand the value of promoting and conserving the culture of night markets. Additionally, they can explore the spirit and meaning behind it. Secondly, with this project, the residents can introduce the historical background of night markets easily as well as show the vitality of night markets to their visitors. Last but not least, people in our community also participate in making night markets known to all around the world.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To complete this project, we got many helpers in the process. Without their assistants,we couldn’t finish this project. Some vendors were willing to share their stories and experiences during the past several years. In addition, the members of night market regulatory commission also gave us some advice and guidance. Furthermore, some local residents volunteered to fill in the questionnaire for us. Thanks to their helps, we eventually finished our project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

The process of doing the project was tough and exhausting sometimes because we had to make a balance between our schoolwork and the project. However, it was extremely rewarding. We've learned a lot from the project and enhance our abilities on various fields. The experience we gained was very precious. Additionally, not until we had a quarrel with one another did we realized the importance of cooperation. Well goes an old saying,' Union is strength.' Hence, only with our collaboration can we make our project more smoothly. Fortunately, we cooperated with one another and achieved our goal in the end.
