Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kaohsiung Ciaotou Sugar Refinery located Ciaotou District Kaohsiung was used to be called Qiaotou. Kaohsiung had been the main sugar-producing area. The sugarcane fields and the sugar workshops were seen all over Taiwan during Qing Dynasty. Dutch were also rewarded for planting sugarcanes. Cheng Gong Zheng expelled Dutch in 1662, and started to cultivate land as well as promoted the production of sugarcane. In 1901, Japanese built the first modern sugar refinery in Ciaotou in Taiwan. It was the first sugar refinery that changed from animal-drawn to modernized machinery. Kaohsiung Ciaotou Sugar Refinery symbolized that Taiwan was pushed forward into industrialization and was also a laboratory of mechanization. Owing to the fact that Taiwan became a member of World Trade Organization (WTO), and the international prices of sugar import were impacted seriously, the sugar business had been stopped in 1999.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main contents of this project not only introduce By Wood team and their contribution but also show their enthusiasm in combining art with nature. Established in 1990, Ciatou Sugar Refinery was the first reformed industry. In 1994, the widespread policy, Whole-community Development, has turned it from the ideal of downfallen sugar industry to the opinion of developing Taiwanese culture. In 1988, Ciatou Sugar Refinery was designated as Taiwan first historical industry remains. In 2001, Ciatou Art Village has led this collapsed place into activating every real possibility. In 2008, people who care about cultural property and contemporary aesthetics rented Ciatou Sugar Refinery Guesthouse and are striving. Ciatou Art Village is the only place that was certified to art as well as ecology. They look forward to sharing a low-carbon practicing life with people who visit By Wood. Their dreams are built on the foundation of the history, errand of initial aesthetics and preservation of cultural assets.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The first problem is because of the huge amount of our school assignments, we were too busy to do this project. We were afaid of not finishing the project in time as well as almost missed the due date. Secondly, we had the less same time to interview people who work at By Wood, and it was hard for us to arrange available time getting together and discussing project. The last is that sometimes we had to do the project at school at noon so we couldn’t take a rest and it was difficult to concentrate on the following classes. Solution: We divided our project into several parts. Everyone charged the parts respectively. After finishing those parts, we combined them into a project, then our teachers would check it out. Also, we had a line group. We could propose our ideas and opinions anytime as well as discuss everywhere.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The environment is important for human beings. By Wood not only promotes environmental education, but also combines education with art. They have also devoted to raising public awareness of environmental protection by learning from taking lessons. We hope that through the introduction of this project, we can spread By Wood’s spirit and ideal to all over the world.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used computers, smart phones, books, digital cameras and oral interviews to complete this project. These tools helped us a lot, because they offered us complete datas. Most of the information was searched by school computers. Some of it was from reference books. Besides, social media is pretty convenience to contact each other, the computer is also a relevant tool for us to do the project ,too. It can not only collect the information, but edit photos.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We had been to By wood many times to experience more characteristic. Once, we interviewed the chief executive of By Wood. She told us many stories and shared her idea with us. She not only taught people right concepts, but also turned them into good hobbits. We learned many lessons there. In fact, we saw every member work so hard to their carry out their ideal; they must have spend a lot of time achieving their dream, and never give up. Although they faced financial crisis, they still held on. I think that we can be ambassadors who spread this spirit. Through this project, we should let more people know here, identify here, even then put their ideal into practice. We don’t need to take it a rush. First, people should be aware of the importance of environmental protection, and then gradually cultivate their aesthetics appreciation.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By Wood redefine the boundary between human and nature. It may be hard for people to strike a balance between monument preservation and marketing benefits. With this website, we can promote to public about the cognition of environmental conservation. All By Wood want to do is protecting the cultural assets, and leave a place for descendants to relax. Otherwise, they regularly hold activities to strengthen adults’ and kids’ the concept of protecting nature as well as to achieve the effects of entertainment. As for ourselves, besides making project, we also understanded the history of Ciaotou Sugar Refinery and By Wood. Their spirit touched us, so we decide to help them to promote their ideal to the whole world. Whether this website works or not, we believe that the faith will be spread by those who really care about this issue. Though I cannot guarantee our website is the best, we definitely spend much time making sure that all the details are exhaustive and complete.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

In this research project, we interviewed the workers of By Wood . As the members’ free time couldn’t match up with each other, we didn't often visit By Wood together, but we still cherished every interviewing experiences and the result had always met our expectations. We put a lot of efforts and take the responsibility of being the local community ambassadors to complete the mission. We saw many beautiful wall paintings and traditional buildings, yet, our heart was broken when we heard that government are going to tear down these old buildings in order to build public infrastructure. It totally inspired us to protect them. We interviewed the people who suppose to preserve the sugar refinery. They conveyed how much they love the nature and art by taking action in person. The reason why they insist to open it up is due to their hope to increase the prosperity and raise more awareness of environmental protection to people. Moreover, our instructors are indeed the most important part of this project. Without their assistance and advices, this project couldn't go smoothly.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When we were translating the sentences and searching some vocabularies, we searched some wrong words and some would be so funny. By doing the project,we realized the importance of teamwork. Because we are a team, everyone should do well on their own things or other members will be bothered. Also,we did not know anything about By Wood until we did this project as well learned a large amount of knowledge. It is a good opportunity for us to contact with new things.
