Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

“Dongxing” is the name of aboriginal society of Taiwanese plains aborigines and former “Liujia” is “Liuzhangli”. We probe into the signs in life and discover the stories of Liujia. Human customs of different people result in the history. Although Dong Xing Elementary School is a new school in Zhubei City, we are the first. As new people who integrate into and change Liujia, we expect that our result will reinforce the human relationship in the community.

2. Summary of Our Project

Liujia Xinwawu located in Zhubei City, Hsinchu County is the only Hakka settlement preservation area in Taiwan and it has been the largest granary in Hsinchu. Nowadays, because of the development of transport construction, “Taiwan High Speed Rail”, we start from Donghsing Canal near the school to explore the stories of Hakka villages. From the passing of water ditch to Taiwan High Speed Rail, urbanization has accelerated in ten years. With the gap of land memory, we attempt to connect the stories which should not be forgotten.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Thanks to internet, we are able to share information with each other efficiently and query data quickly. In the end, we become good at active learning and have known the wider world by a network relation.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

It is difficult to collect data. Most of them are information segments and have not been sorted out systematically. For misinformation, our team members have to spend much time on digestion, tracing and confirmation. Besides, for being unfamiliar with the operation of computer software, we need to spend more time on making and learning. Most team members usually attend tutorial class and the time for group discussion between all the team members is limited. Occasionally, the progress report to be submitted will fall behind and delay. Fortunately, with the supervision and urge, we have completed all the work. The difficulties we have encountered during the interview include: as the interviewees are mostly the seniors with strong local accent, we have some difficulty in understanding them. In addition, we intended to interview with the high-speed rail station, but the time for Cyberfair is not enough for the need of round trip of official documents. Thus, we feel greatly regretful for it. Finally, we have experienced the toil of Mr. Luo to run around initially.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through Cyberfair project, we have understood that all we have come from the efforts of predecessors, so we admire and appreciate them and even treasure the existing cultural assets more. For those receiving the benefits by chance, if they are broad-minded and willing to share, it can bring benefits to villages to realize richness in reality and happiness in state of mind. It is our greatest harvest to help to clear up the truth in the past and make all the residents here have a new understanding of Lioujia.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language: the ability of writing, expression and discussion can be cultivated through data collection, summary, integration, communication and interview. Society: the local resources in the community are used to assist us with Cyberfair project so as to understand the community environment better and care for social sentiment. Mathematics: the concept of statistical analysis is applied to sort out the data required. Arts: drawing, color matching, art designing, typesetting, photography, music production and other skills are combined to complete the webpage making and we cooperated with each other in Children’s Play. Sports: the time is managed effectively, including field survey and fulfillment in sui zun and bicycle LOHAS sports. Science and technology: information equipment is applied to improve the abilities in Excel statistics, webpage making, presentation and video editing.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have completed a wireless internet and can receive the internet message in the campus everywhere. Our school has two Computer Classrooms, which has 32 personal computers available for students to use. Every computer is provided with an exclusive line for connecting to internet and various web services are available for application through the server. The school’s servers include Web Server, Mail Server, DNS Server and Proxy Server that provide convenient online application environment. Every student has his or her own E-mail address and has the capability of web making. 1. Telephone - Contact between team members, contact between team members and interviewees, arrange time of interviews. 2. Single rifle projector – Concept Clarifying and topic discussion 3.Scanner – Scanning of students’ creation of poems and pictures 4. Video Camera, Digital Camera 5. MP3 and Recording Pen – Sound recordings during interviews. 6. Computer Software: Dreamweaver CS6, PowerPoint 2010, PhotoImpact X3, Word2010, EXCEL2010 - Make interview outline, survey and questionnaire, and website 7. Library and museum: newspaper and magazine and old photoes 8. Survey -- Questionnaires

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We have set 3 objectives for this Cyberfair project. First of all, we collected data in a manner of division of labor or directly interviewed related personnel. Afterwards, we held achievement presentation for promotion and sorted out such information to make the webpage. In this way, everyone can know more about the cultural background of Lioujia of high-speed rail and know that there is a very meaningful activity – Cyberfair in Taiwan. As for the third long-range vision, we would like to show to the world that Taiwan is a small treasure island but a melting pot with a wide range of peoples. The transportation construction (human factor) has changed landscapes and ethnic group structure, so we are reminded to treasure the humanistic environment and natural ecology.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We have kept the orally written records of the local seniors and used our own methods to introduce them to new generation of students for cultural heritage. Our parents are also the new foreign residents and they have also understood the history of Lioujia through our sharing; meanwhile the campus and community personnel have given us credit for our efforts.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our teacher takes this opportunity to teach us (some like-minded students) how to research a special topic. During the process, we have learned various kinds of knowledge like data query, interviewing skills, cooperation and division of labor, etc. In case of difficulties, we are able to conquer them one by one, which has also improved our centripetal force. In spite of laborious process, we harvest a lot. For us, it is a very precious experience where our life has become more colorful and our learning vision has been broadened.
