Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei Municipal Changan Elementary School is located Zhongshan District and south of the downtown Taipei City. School is closed to the business district and has convenient transportation. There are Songjiang-Nanjing MRT Station and Jilin-Nanjing bus Station. Located on the northeastern coast of Taiwan, Longdong Bay is a natural attraction known for rich marine resources and natural attractions. Longdong Bay is like a dragon occupying the arc-shaped bay shore. It is under administration of Gongliao District, New Taipei City, facing the East Sea, which is managed by Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area. It is only about 40 minutes' drive from Taipei City, which is very conveniently accessed for the students in the city. This research does not cost huge money and has no difficulty in traffic.

2. Summary of Our Project

The main contents of this research are to explore promotion of the tourism and ecological culture in Longdong Bay. The project focuses on sharing of the snorkeling experience in Longdong Bay. Snorkeling is an increasingly popular leisure activity in recent years, and many people in Taiwan go abroad for snorkeling during their holidays. This Cyberfair project intends to make the people know the locations of snorkeling in Taiwan. In this way, they can know the beauty of Taiwan but also save the time and money for going abroad. We visited the local sites and selected Longdong Bay Ocean Park where the coach provides instruction for snorkeling, and also visited the Bitou Cape Trail, Longdong Bay Cape Trail and Old Caoling Tunnel. By collecting the information and applying for guide interpretation through Internet, we further understand attractions, topography, ecology and culture of Longdong Bay, instead of the 'Keelung Mountain of the Winter”, which we only know from textbooks. This Cyberfair project can promote the local tourism resources in Longdonwan, and we collated the queried and actual data from the experience and integrated them into the thematic web page, and hoped to let everyone know that Longdong Bay is a place worth visiting, and that this Cyberfair project can make the unique local tourism resources of Longdong Bay sustainable.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our teacher built the Changan 27CWSC web platform for us to upload and update data as well as handing in assignments. When we had no time to meet together, we also used the website discussion forum to discuss. Our teachers also let us use the computers in the classroom of gifted students during lunch and recess to complete our study progress.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Data compilation In order to obtain the first-hand information, it is necessary to keep a word-for-word record after every interview, and the quality of the recorded audio files varies depending on the recording environment. With the limited equipment and technology, we kept word-for-word records and collated them into the data required for website. In addition, it took lots of time in collection and analysis of the questionnaires. With increase of time, practice makes perfect, we improved the efficiency.

Time and Efficiency We had to complete the snorkeling activities before October. Thus, we must start a series of activities upon the start of the school. In addition to obtaining consent of parents and the school, we needed to acquire the knowledge and receive the training, and it took time to arrange the date, place, people and things. The whole process was quite intense. While in the snorkeling, we also had to complete the interview, the survey and other work. In October, we spent a lot of time in the data collation. If the assigned work cannot be completed on schedule, more work will be accumulated. After the visit to the northeastern coast in December, we obtained a lot of information. Thus, we were busiest in January. If we were lazy, we may drag the team partners, so we must be diligent and take the work seriously.

Teamwork Division of work and cooperation can make a difficult thing more efficient. If a classmate finishes his/her work first, he/she would help others. Because we had a common goal to complete this Cyberfair project, in this process, we learned to take advantage of each other's strengths to help others. In addition, we also learned how to listen to and respect different views, which can ensure smooth completion of the work.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This mission made us learn a lot of snorkeling skills, so that we could be more efficiently while we went ‘’real’’ snorkeling. And then, we began to design questionnaires and interview topics. It’s a tough work to us, because each question must be designed to its purpose and appropriateness. We use the different viewpoint to experience these view we’ve never seen before. It was an unforgettable experience! After snorkeling, we started writing manuscripts. We had listened to the vague recording with 120% of our attention over and over again to complete the manuscripts. First of all, snorkeling is not as difficult as we initially imagined. Second, we know the diving point of the northeast corner of Taiwan. Thanks to this awesome opportunity, we went snorkeling at Longdong Bay, but also visited the nearby attractions. We found that the northeast corner of Taiwan is really beautiful and suitable choice for family travel.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Arts We needed to use our own language skills in completing interview manuscripts, interviews, and research data. During the interview process, we needed to carefully observe the surroundings and record the key points. After completion of the interview, we need to display the audio files in a text form, and highlight the contents. Mathematics: In the survey, we used print questionnaire forms because carrying pens and paper to the survey site is very convenient. Everyone was probably responsible for ten questionnaires. It is important to accurately calculate the time needed for statistics and collation. Society For this Cyberfair project, we not only collected lot of historical and cultural information, but also visited the local environment. By close to nature, they can care for nature and life. At the same time, this can enhance our understanding of local and national identity.

Arts and Humanities: This Cyberfair project uses the concept of harmony between man and society, and between man and nature to better life. We also use this opportunity to explore people and sceneries with sensory perception and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery in the environment. Moreover, Photoshop technique is needed to show better photos. Science and Technology: We found there are large amount of human-made garbage in the ocean. We witnessed the consequences of the powerful typhoon, and garbage which was fished by park workers were piled on the coast. During snorkeling in the ocean, the garbage hit our head. After experiencing the snorkeling, we are determined to protect our ocean and will not litter garbage.

Integrative Activities This is very important. Besides, we learned to spare no effort on everything. We should clearly know deadline of submission of the interview results and completion of other work, so that we will not lag behind the progress and drag others.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The most information homework for us is form the “27CWSC digital platform”. Using these network platforms in school, we can upload our work and interview information. We can also discuss our thoughts in this place and share all kinds of information. With 27CWSC digital platform, even if we could not attend research meetings, we can keep up with everyone's progress.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Longdong Bay is a beautiful and natural attraction. In order to let us learn more about it, our teacher arranged a lot of activities for us, including going snorkeling at Longdong Bay Ocean Park, visiting Bitou Cape Trail, Longdong Bay Cape Trail, and Old Caoling Tunnel. In addition, we interviewed the local snorkeling instructor, tour guide and so on. Through these activities, we learned a lot of valuable experience and knowledge. Besides life saving skills, we understood the significance of snorkeling. With these experience, we get closer to the ocean. The journey to the trails around Longdong Bay allows us to comprehend the magic and ingenuity of the Creator. We also learned that the living things and the landscape here are worth treasuring. We hope that we can share these precious experience and discoveries with the public through our project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Snorkeling is an important water sports activities in Longdong Bay, we have a new understand of the ocean by snorkeling. By snorkeling, we found out how interesting the marine ecology is. We are very surprised to see so many marine life around us. How were people not touched by this beautiful landscape and ecology. But human pollution of the environment is also worsening, even marine litter can be seen in protected waters. The rich culture and geographical environment of Longdong Bay not only let us learn more knowledge but also nourish our hearts. Moreover, making this project makes us understand the greatness and beauty of nature, and remind us the importance of cherishing our Mother Earth.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

With the opportunity of doing this project, we visited Coach Te-Cheng Yin, a four-star coach in the Association of Diving School International (ADS), and Manager Hsiu-Chuan Lin, the project manager at Longdong Bay Ocean Park. Mr. Yung-lung Lin and Mr. Hsiao-ming Chen, the directors of the Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration in the northeast corner, Wei-You Shih of Xiangzhou Travel Agency. We are grateful for their support and assistance to our research, so that we could get more familiar with the human geography of Longdong Bay. In addition, we would like to thank the visitors who are very enthusiastic to help us finish our questionnaires. With their help, our visit program was very successful.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We were afraid whether the activities would be canceled because the typhoon occurred in Longdong Bay one week ago. Fortunately, the plan remained unchanged. When we arrived at the site, the garbage was carried by the typhoon to the coast and the park workers were using shovels to put the garbage into the bags. The bags filled with driftwood and garbage was piled up as high as people. However, there was still much garbage scattered on the ground. It seemed the cleaning was endless. In addition, large driftwood and garbage was so much that it is hard to image, and was stuck in the floater, and drifted in the ocean. When we went snorkeling, several hours passed, and however there were still many plastic bags, pet bottle caps and EPS in the ocean. Some were hit by the driftwood. This snorkeling will be unforgettable because we not only appreciated the beauty of Taiwan and the ocean, but also found the ocean crisis and the creature killer and ecological catastrophe. We learned that: We only have one earth, and the ocean is not a landfill. If all the garbage is thrown into the ocean, we will no longer see these beautiful creatures and the environment! After learning the lesson from this experience, we will not litter garbage. In order to protect our earth and ocean, we must reduce garbage and sort and recycle it!
