Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

A local community can be as small as a street neighborhood or as wide as a national territory. As long as the group of people sharing the same resources, holding the same believes, fulfilling the same needs or facing the same risks is able to be considered as a local community. Therefore, we choose Taipei Feitsui Reservoir as our object to study as Taipei citizens, since it is our fountain of life. It is our duty to promote the community raised up by such marvelous water and electricity supplies offered by the Mother Nature and to ensure people will not ignore how valuable it is. We believe the common reliance on water and environment can be applied to local communities globally.

2. Summary of Our Project

Introduce Taipei Feitsui Reservoir in different aspects including the history background, the ecological environment and the potential problems, etc. Through the journey of exploration in the Feitsui Reservoir community, we want to arouse the awareness of Taipei residents to treasure the beauty of the living neighborhood then notice the issue of environmental protection. People in modern society, especially metropolitan area, are too busy on daily works to approach the Mother Nature. Therefore, we hope this web project can promote the importance of the community by the dependence of people on the internet. Furthermore, by sharing the information about the power plant of Feitsui Reservoir, Taipei citizens will learn the trend of green power development and start to reduce the wastage of water.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Time limitation is the top challenge to the members. Jing-Wen is a private high school in the capital city of Taiwan, so students are required to spend moist of time in academic study. The team had to squeeze the spare time to overcome series challenges such as the information collection, the contents editing and the web-pages design techniques. Therefore, well-organized plan and team work are crucial under the time pressure. Additionally, each member had different standard and expectation during the collaboration. Rational communication and understanding with compassion are indispensible in the process. Since every crew is young with high self-esteem, the assistance of teachers is essential during the negotiation. Fortunately, we all solved the problems smoothly and reached to agreement in arguments in the end.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We've learned to debate from diverse perspectives with broader vision and the awareness of public benefits. The experience is so extraordinary and valuable that we hope we can effect others by our own actions.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The project covers the fields including geography, computer practice, applied English, and web designs, etc. Therefore, to complete the project, the team needed to consult with the teachers in each field to achieve each task in the working process. The working process was divided in to several tasks and set with different requirements and datelines. Teachers in each subject will supervise students’ outcome and include the result as a part of their final grades. Also, the project will be the demonstration to each subject while teachers giving lectures and case study in other class. Through the interaction, the idea and purpose of the project can be promote to more people.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Smart phones and notebooks connected with internet are main tools to complete the project. When the team went for interview, smart phones were really convenient to take photos, record the conversation and take notes. Notebooks installed with web-design software are easy for us to work in laboratory, classroom or libraries. Other paper resources such as newspaper, professional magazines, and documentary are also very helpful when we edit the content of the web page.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After the team studied about the Feitsui Reservoir and realized the importance of water resource, they have started to change their way using water in daily life. Also, they've spent so much time on the project by interviewing or visiting other people they might not have chance to know before. Their families and friends were curious about their changes. Since they themselves involved each step in the progress, they are able to share with others with convincing explanation and passion. Some of students mentioned that his action has changed the water wastage of his family.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We consider our project is an entrance to have a rough picture Feitsui Reservoir. We've contend the most essential information about the neighborhood and release to every relevant class from different perspective to increase people, especially other students', interests to approach the area. Instead of giving serious lecture about environmental protection, the story and the idea are packed as a demonstration which will be delivered in diverse professional class.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We've received many volunteers to help us to complete the project. For example, the chief of the village helped students to arrange the interview with staff of Feitsui Reservoir Administration. The staff of the administration indicate the faults of interpretation in the webpage. One of crew's parent shared latest news whenever she found anything relevant with our project. There are many others which is impossible to list out. Our project has become more complete because of their assistance.
