Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school sits in the Songhua community of Shouan Town, Pujiang County, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. It taking the coach at Xinnanmen station of Chengdu City, along the Chendu-Yaan high way, after a 40 minutes drive, taking turn off the high way at Dhouanmen, and going west 5 kilometer. School is adjacent to Lingxi River, between Big Wumian Mountain and Smil Wumian Mountain; there is 20 kilometer saway from Mujiang County. It is about 1 kilometer from school to a new Express route, Chengdu-Xinjing-Pujiang,. The intercity railway from Chengdu to Pujian which is being builded is expected to be operational in 2016

2. Summary of Our Project

Pujiang is a southwest gate of Chengdu City complimented as “East of Eden”, it is a transportation hub and an important material distribution center with the only artery to Tibet from Sichuan. Known as the “Chengdu Garden, Green Pujiang”, Pujian is National Ecological Demonstration Area. The view of wetlands and water-logged area in Chengdu Basin disappeared, but wetlands in Pujiang are still with us. Pujiang River, Linxi River goes through the territory of Pujiang County, Pujiang people live in the water village that include Changtan Lake, Caoyang Lake, Shixiang Lake, the vast stretches of rice paddy, many dotted ponds and small reservoirs. Under the dual pressures of population explosion and economic development, a large number of wetlands were transformed into farmland in late twentieth Century, coupled with excessive exploitation of resources and pollution, the area of wetland was greatly reduced, and the wetland species were seriously damaged.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school used the broadband local area network (LAN),and we could only use computer rooms at the rest time of the moon or at weekends, because there were many classes using the computer rooms , we almost had no access to the rooms at ordinary time. Sometimes the classmates also went to other places for their writing, including teacher's home and administration offices at school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First, the schedule was tight, in autumn classmates got up at seven o'clock in the morning for independent study, which ended at nine o'clock in the evening, and teacher Liu was our class teacher, also responsible for the work in school administration offices, so the classmates could only use the time of noon break and before dinner to do a little, sometimes to do a little at weekends when we managed to the school, and we accumulated the work that needed to be done bit by bit. Second, difficult for interview, Pujiang River and Linxi River are close to our school, it is convenience to go there for sightseeing. But Changtan Lake, Caoyang Lake and Shixiang Lake are far away from our school, about over 30 kilometers. So we had to find information on line. Third, data collection. This year, the theme of our choice is the wetland, teacher Liu called us together, and asked us: 'do you know the wetlands? Do you know the wetlands here?' We all shook head, so accessed to a lot of information, but we only had a little understanding of the wetlands. And we went home and asked our families and neighbors: 'do you know the wetlands? What are the benefits of wetlands? And what impact on our lives if the Wetland reduced?' They knew nothing about it. Ssecretary Huang in Manan village not only had this kind of knowledge, but also knew the situation of Manan village, and he gave us a lot of help.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Human society development can not ignore the biological categories, can not forget that they also have the reason of existence; human science and technology progress can not ignore the laws of nature, can not imagine the above all. Lost the clean air, water, safe food and the coexistence of diverse living things, the development of human society will lose its meaning.Wetland is closely related with human life, the responsibilities of wetland protection takes patience and hard work, only everybody understands the importance of wetland protection, wetland can get real protection, the ecosystem of the planet can be balanced truly.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Train students to build up team work ability. Cultivate the students' abilities of observing and getting information. Broaden students' horizons, let students walk into the residential area and people's home to understand people's lives, the change of the countryside and the new rural construction. Promote students to acquire knowledge well

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Telephone: contacting and schedule a time to visit Digital camera: photograph U-disk: Data storage, backup Iphoto Express:Processing images CISS:Webpage making Microsoft Word :Typing and editing Internet Explorer :searching for information, communicating Network:Broadband network Computer and software belong to the school, U-disk is personal belongings. Students can get on line in school and at home. Community staffs and people helped us a lot, they offered a lot of information about Manan residential area. Digital camera was extremely useful in interview.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

By this activity, let community has more understood our school and Town & Talent Project, through our interview to make them know that focus on the area was to focus on their life, and also on the new rural construction.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through the research, we have learned how to cooperate as well as how to effectively communicate with people and interviewees. In addition, we have also known how to sort materials. Many teachers and students in our school has browsed the web pages of “Pujiang Popcorn”, “Pujiang Tea Industry”, “Pujiang Kiwi” and “Red Sunset” we made in the past. They speak highly of us when they know that our web pages have won prizes in International Internet Culture Expo. We are all proud of ourselves for that we have set up a good image for our school. After our web site “Approaching Wetlands” published on line, we believe many people will be able to see, and raise their environmental awareness. Both in the government, unit and individuals, they must be focused on environment construction while developing the economy. We hope and believe that as ecological environment get attention, Pujiang and even the earth will turn into a better place to live in,

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The people who help us most are community staffs, family and neighbors, they provided a lot of information about farmland improvement and wetlands protection.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

By our study, we found that the wetland area has been diminishing sharply, the wetland species were seriously damaged due to blind reclamation, exploitation, pollution, excessive use and other factors. The artificial wetlands--- paddy rice are getting shrinks with our rural structural adjustment. Nowadays wetlands to storing water in winter are weakening. Alot of fruit trees and other plants are instead of paddy fields. Human society development can not ignore the biological categories, can not forget that they also have the reason of existence; human science and technology progress can not ignore the laws of nature, can not imagine the above all. Lost the clean air, water, safe food and the coexistence of diverse living things, the development of human society will lose its meaning. Wetland is closely related with human life, the responsibilities of wetland protection takes patience and hard work, only everybody understands the importance of wetland protection, wetland can get real protection, the ecosystem of the planet can be balanced truly.
