Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei Municipal Changan Elementary School is located Zhongshan District and south of the downtown Taipei City. School is closed to the business district and has convenient transportation. There are Songjiang-Nanjing MRT Station and Jilin-Nanjing bus Station. CCNDA is located at No.45, Lane 33, Section 1, Jianguo North Road. It takes 5-10 minutes to get from Changan Elementary School to CCNDA by Bus 52 or Bus 202 and 25 minutes by walking. CCNDA, serving eight boroughs of southern Zhongshan District in Taipei City, is a local group caring for the disadvantaged.

2. Summary of Our Project

It is social fairness and justice caring for the disadvantaged. We discovered that our society still lacks of caring for the disadvantaged students, groups, and areas. Without counseling assistance or measures, the weak people may always be weak and the strong people may always be strong, which will hurt the society’s stability and development. Therefore, it is urgent to build an environment that helps the disadvantaged people and develops sound social welfare. We hope the introduction of CCNDA can encourage everyone to respect diversity, care for the disadvantaged people and fulfill civic responsibilities.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our teacher built the Changan 27CWSC web platform for us to upload and update data as well as handing in assignments. When we had no time to meet together, we also used the website discussion forum to discuss. Our teachers also let us use the computers in the classroom of gifted students during lunch and recess to complete our study progress.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Data compilation After interviews, we had to organize the data. We divided tasks, such as writing scripts, writing interview thoughts, and compiling data. The data was very helpful for our research. After the survey, we did statistical analysis and created bar graphs to help us study data. The process for discussion and reading graphs was very time-consuming, but we became more efficient as time went by and our experience grew. It proves our abilities did grow. Time and Efficiency We decided the topic in mid-September. Most off-campus teaching and services were executed in November, so it was the busiest period. The activities during this period included activity planning, interviews, writing and editing, and website data collection. We almost could not take so much work during the short period of time, so we needed to watch and help each another in order to complete the jobs efficiently. Also, we needed to fulfill our weekly progress goals, because any delay would accumulate and cause the schedule fall behind. Teamwork Work distribution is a very important procedure. The principle is distributing our work according to our ability and expertise, so that we complete each job easily and more efficiently. We first chose our jobs according to our own expertise, and then took our teacher’s suggestions. Teamwork is very important; we couldn’t have gotten our jobs down without the encouragement of our supervisor and each other, thus, we created strong relationship of tactful understanding and cooperation within ourselves.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

During the interview, we learned much that we did not know before, which changed our team’s original perspective and impression of the topic. Mr. Hung-en Chang, the Secretary-General, told us that companionship provides us strength. Children need adults to accompany them, since that is where their security comes from, and hence accompaniment is a great thing. The selfless care and dedication coming from our volunteer teachers taught us that their love came from their heart. From this Cyberfair project, we learned that we needed to respect people who do not have what we have and understand the difficulties caused by difference. We also improved our research ability and language. Most importantly, we learned to help one another and care for the disadvantaged. We hope our research can encourage more people to care for society and make it more harmonious.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Language Arts /Mandarin: Language learning abilities are required for us to plan an interview list, record the interview, write the interview thoughts, and produce research information. When we made the questionnaire, we needed to express what we were asking in a way that everyone could understand. When we did interviews or questionnaires we needed to express ourselves very well, and could not be too nervous when talking. After the interview, we listened to the record, and converted the interview’s contents into writing. This required good comprehensive ability to completely understand the thinking and ideas the interviewees expressed. Mathematics: We made our questionnaires with our personal computers. It was very important for us to know how much time we needed to scan and organize the questionnaire so that we could actually calculate the total time. In the questionnaire statistics, we needed to learn quantity statistics and bar chart production, and concluded the research results from the numerical expression. Social Studies: From this Cyberfair project, we learned more about the disadvantage situation of the society and the importance of empathy, care and loving heart. The concepts of a polybasic society and respecting the differences are emphasized by the society, and we fully utilized what we learned from this research to understand this topic more. Arts and Humanities: We had a lot of interaction with children during the learning procedure of CCNDA. We saw the teachers put in efforts for the children, and felt the wonderful interactive art among people. This art deserved our appreciation and learning with an artistic mood. Science and Technology: We used the computer to do most of our work such as statistical questionnaire, thoughts writing, and interview record review. We recorded all details of our interview and the procedure of our learning in the research.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The most information homework for us is form the “27CWSC digital platform”. Using these network platforms in school, we can upload our work and interview information. We can also discuss our thoughts in this place and share all kinds of information. With 27CWSC digital platform, even if we could not attend research meetings, we can keep up with everyone's progress.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to effectively help the community, our teacher arranged many activities, including the interview with CCNDA, for us. Through the activities and interactions with the community, we learned precious experience and knowledge. We gradually understood their needs and some aspects which most people didn’t know and learned that caring for them was more important than donating money or being a volunteer. Besides, working with them was an invaluable experience. Serving or caring for the disadvantaged is not an easy job, but many people, such as the teachers and volunteers of CCNDA, are willing to put time and effort into it. Their selfless humanitarian spirit is our good example. We felt their sincerity and enthusiasm when visiting them, so we would like to share our feelings and precious experience with everyone through our Cyberfair project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During the Cyberfair project, we had to type in lots of interview contents since some interview was extremely long. Some team members often forgot to hand in their assignments, but we still overcome many difficulties eventually. Even though we spent a lot of time, including class time, lunch break, and holidays, to finish the project, we were willing to do it. We learned to respect each other. What’s the difference between others and us? We are willing to share, but how do we help the people in need receive help and respect? We have learned these during the Cyberfair project. Even though working on the project affected our daily routine, it helps us see the warmth and unknown side of our society and motivates us to help more people in need.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the beginning we didn’t knew much about the disadvantaged people, but after studying, we were shocked that in the society so many people needed help or never experienced the happiness of owning everything they liked, while we were so picky with food or inadvertently hurt those who loved us with our cold attitude or words. The experience had taught our team to reflect on our previous attitude towards life and people. Because of the project, we get to know many selfless people and learned the importance of tolerance, empathy, and love. Moreover, We learned that to help people, we needed to know their need first, and the society wasn’t perfect but we could make it better with our actions. We saw the touching deeds in which good people cared for the disadvantaged and shared the stories. The project brought us surprises and shocks. You will have a better picture of our feelings after reading though the project.
