Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our Indian Community. It comprises of all type of people of different age group and different social, economic and cultural backgrounds. All the people of our community have a diverse thinking and a variety of opinions on all subject matters.

2. Summary of Our Project

The project is according to the theme, “Inspire and Unite” as we tend to inspire the communities all around the world about the unique features and traditions of Indian Weddings and show them our unique bonding, togetherness and our sense of fraternity followed by almost all Indian citizens. Indian weddings are one of those extraordinary features of India that greatly influences people worldwide. For Indians and especially people belonging to the Hindu community, these weddings are merely an event of family-friends get togetherness and of course the marriage of couples. In India weddings are said to be auspicious bonds of love tied firmly not only between the married couple but between the two families as well.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We could not get to work daily on internet oriented computers which further delayed our project. The main reason behind all this was that only two proper functioning computers had internet and many times other school teachers were working on it for various purposes because of which all our internet related work delayed for several weeks. We could not work much at home as well.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We faced a number of problems in our project. First problem was internet and computer issues as we could not get internet oriented computers daily for our work where most of our work was internet related researching only. Second problem was that the team members were backing out again and again on seeing the work pressure and limited number of days. We actually wasted around a week on deciding just the team members our group would comprise of. Third problem we faced was that not all type of work was accepted by the team members voluntarily who mostly chose to work as per their convenience and this led to several disagreements within the group which delayed the project more. Out of the members that left, their work had to be re-divided among the team which put more pressure on the remaining members. Fourth problem we faced was our half yearly and annual examinations approaching due to which we could not give appropriate time to the project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Cyber Fair has given the students and the school an amazing opportunity to participate in an international competition. Most of all, it has given the experience of thinking globally. Deciding a local community topic as per the theme and creating a web project was an all-new experience to us students. This competition has impacted the students in a very good way.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

This project fit into the school and curriculum guidelines as it was entirely based on the ceremonial event of our local community i.e. Indian Weddings which is the common most event observed by all Indian community members. We learnt various skills and techniques related to many aspects. After the research we did, we came to know about various rituals and small events conducted in the weddings. After the surveys we conducted, we came to know about the views, opinions and comments of different age grouped members of our community on the topic we have focused upon. We learnt many software related things as well like website creation & HTML coding. It has definitely been more effective and efficient as Internet offered us a wide range of important information, cleared all our doubts and difficulties (minor & major), gave a variety of ideas and more exposure to all type of informative pieces about Indian Weddings.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used a number of tools for our project. Those include 2 computers, 3 telephones, 2 digital cameras and took help from our school library. We used Windows 7 as the computer software. These tools helped us as these we did all our research work and presentation through the medium of these tools only. We were able to reach out to the community people and also get followers on our project related page on social networking sites through the efficient use of these tools only. Computers were the most important tools as almost 80% of the work we did through this medium only whether it was Internet related work or offline work. Camera was the most important technology we used. It was valuable to us as we needed to take pictures of almost every moment and use them as a proof of our work to show to the school of our active participation.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We acted as ambassadors and spokespersons for our Cyber Fair project online by creating our web project related page on social networking sites and reaching out to the people online by creating posts and further awareness among them all about Indian Weddings. We acted as ambassadors and spokespersons in person by presenting our project through several presentations in our school, creating and conducting surveys within different age groups and getting into group discussions about out chosen Cyber Fair topic and theme.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project has put a great impact on our community members as most of all it has created awareness among the people. Although the topic Indian Weddings is in focus in the community but it is not a widely discussed and known topic these days. People in Indian Community are nowadays not showing a keen interest to marry following all the rituals and events and neither are the youngers of our country showing a keen enthusiasm to know about such ceremonies. Out of the people we surveyed, we came to know that almost 60% of the people are not aware about the basic Indian wedding rituals and what all do they symbolize. Due to such lack of interest of people, Indian Weddings are losing their charm. The biggest difference we made through our project is that we made an attempt to re-develop the interest of Indian people towards Indian weddings through our project. We attempted to reach out to the maximum number of people possible and put forward the first step to bring the attraction of people back on the country’s most exquisite ceremony. The unique point about our presentation is that we started to carry out the purpose of our project from our school; targeting the younger generation aged between 14-17 years of age. We presented our very purpose through our website and that fact is what makes our presentation unique. Out of the feed-backs we received, we came to know about many people who have shown interest and have gone through our web pages not just to become a follower of website but for learning Indian Wedding facts whether old or unknown.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our project involved other members of our community as helpers and volunteers as they all put a major contribution to our project by giving us their opinions on the Indian Weddings. They gave us a detailed description of their views through the surveys we conducted. Some volunteered to give us some related pictures of the wedding to display on our website.
