Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taoyuan was the native home to Ketagalan tribe and was called Humaozhuang (Humao Village) before. After Han people settled down here, peach trees were extensively planted in the city. The place was called Taoziyuan (Peach Blossom Garden) because of the red peach blossoms everywhere during the flowering season.

Taoyuan City is one of the thirteen cities governed by Taoyuan County. There are many local attractions here, like Hutou Mountain, the Martyr’s Shrine. Taoyuan Tourist Night Market, our topic, is also one of the attractions in Taoyuan.

Our school, Taoyuan Elementary school, was called Taoyuan Common School during Japenese Occupation. It was the first school for Taiwanese students in Taoyuan, and was founded 144 years ago. It is a cradle for great local people. For example, the ex vice-president is one of our alumni.

Taoyuan Tourist Night Market is 1.8 kilometer from taoyuan Train Station. It takes you about 24 minutes to walk here from the train station, and you don’t even have to make a turn. According to Google Map, it takes you only eight minutes to drive straight to get here from the station. It’s a very convenient spot for tourists to explore.

Once we decided the topic, every member was eager to reveal the veil of night market and introduce it to people from different places.

In order to successfully promote the night market, we discussed and made the plan: 1.collect information on Internet: Unfortunately, there were not an official website of the night market.

2.store census: we did a comprehensive store census and found out that some stores had no exact addresses. Some of the stores didn’t have business cards.

3.interview with the owners: we talked to the store owners at the night market. They thought that the government didn’t care about the night market.

4.visit the Old Street: we talked to the store owners on the Old Street and ask if they wanted to be included into the night market in the future.

5.interview with tourists: We designed a questionnaire to discover the popular food at the night market.

6.interview with Management committee: After the interview, we understood the members of the committee worked very hard for the welfare of all.

7.interview with Deputy Mayor Lu: We understood the government’s plan and policy on the night market. We also offered the result of our investigation to Tao Yuan City Government.

8.night market navi: We navigated the stores and food stands at the night market.

9.give away business cards: we designed business cards for some of the stores.

In this case study, we changed our roles from the consumers to researchers. After the research, we became a promoter. We hoped that people would learn more about the night market on our website and love to come here for the food and the amusement.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Time: Most of our team members are fifth graders. We have a lot of work to do at school and after school. Even though we did the program during the winter vacation, everyone needed to go to different classes. During the Chinese New Year, everyone needed to stay home with their families. It was difficult for all of us to meet together.

2.Casual Vacancy One of our teammate dropped out because of her heavy homework. We were very lucky to have Tzu Ning taking the vacancy. We thought that five people in a team was better.

3.Communication Skill When we asked people to fill in the questionnaires, we ran into problems. Some people quit answering because they were in a rush, and the others just ignored us or told us to leave them alone. By finishing this program, we have learned how to communicate with people.

4.Facility Since we need to interview the venders and store owners, we took cameras with us. One time we ran of battery power and couldn’t take pictures.

5.Transportation We commuted from our school to the night market by Mr. Cheng’s car. It’s a small vehicle and there were six of us. Although it was crowded and kind of dangerous, we achieved our goal.

6.Weather We started our research at the end of November, and the weather at that time was rainy. Since the night market was open-aired, it was not easy to do our job on rainy days. The schedule was therefore delayed a lot.

7.Financial To finish this program, we bought a lot of things to do our field research. Thanks our parents for offering financial support.

8.Writing Skill We needed to write journals and reports after every field research. We needed better observing and writing skill to make them interesting and eye catching.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The teacher: Well, we did a great job that the County Government would do. Keep going, children.

Chung Hsiang: I didn’t have the chance to go to the night market until I joined the team. I understand that everyone is doing his or her best to get a better live.

Ai Chin: I often went to the night market before doing this program. Now I know more about its history and details. I have a clearer picture of it now.

Pei Ling: Although I have been to the night market for so many times, I didn’t realized that there were a lot of interesting places to go and many delicious food to eat in the market. Now I know the place better.

Tzu Ning: I am amazed at what I’ve learned about the night market. Even a very common food stand has its own history.

Kuo Wei: Even though the night market is not very popular, I’m sure it will be after our publicity.
