Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Hualien County locates in East Taiwan, facing endless Pacific Ocean in the east, connecting with magnificent Central Mountain Area. With mountains and the ocean make it a world-famous scenery, Toroko Gorge in the north, coastline national park scenery area in the east, Jade Mountain National Park in the south, East Rift Valley with fantastic countryside views passing through. Nature beauty is all around. Hualien was called Qilai long ago. Hualien River goes east to the ocean and its waters surge with the waves; therefore, it is called 'Huelan' (whirling fence). People use the assonance to say 'Hualien'. Hualien County with 4628 square kilometers is the largest county in Taiwan. Population of 355,000 makes Fukienese, Hakka, mainlanders and aboriginal people living together. They get alone harmoniously with simple nice culture and work together to develop this pure land.

2. Summary of Our Project

The one we’re introducing today has a close relationship to the poems from Tang Dynasty. He’s a poet who has written some Tang poems. To us, most people write modern poems nowadays. Not knowing much about the Tang poetry, it has occurred to me that why it’s so difficult to write the Tang poems. It is difficult enough to choose the proper words and match the tones throughout the whole poem, can’t even think of becoming a poet.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

The school's internet situation Currently our school uses ADSL cable connection in our computer lab.We have 76 computers for the students and 2 for the teacher. Home internet situation Members of the team use 56K dial-up service and ADSL cable connection. At home we utilize MSN messenger, email, and FTP to discuss and to transmit information.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. We went to visit some teachers who teach related subjects, such as Chinese and history, if we encountered any problem about the structures of Tang poems and Chinese history.

2. We couldn’t get our visiting time coordinated, so we decided to work in parts. For example, if some members of the team went out to interview, others would stay behind and prepare and organise the questions and results.

3. While composing the poems, we couldn’t break through our own limits, nor the problem of being too vernacular. However, Mr. Yao suggested that we could read more Tang poetry, memorize them, and try to understand the prospects. This problem was solved a little after that.

4. During the interview, very often we couldn’t continue the conversation and needed our teachers to do it for us. After doing more interviews, the situation was improved.

5. We didn’t know how to use the SLR cameras at the beginning so we were quite frustrated. Then Teacher Zhang Yao taught us how to use them so we could finally use them properly. And we also learned to adjust the aperture, know how to position the camera, and the lighting. We did have learned a lot. 6. Mr. Yao came from Hubei in China so he has a very strong accent. We did have some problem to understand his speaking. We sometimes had to use our body language to communicate but also brought us a great joy.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this time, we interviewed Mr. Yao in order to know more about him. During the interviews, we learned that Mr. Yao is a man with humor and knowledge of literature, also many of his small stories. We listens to each story carefully and try to understand them.

When someone is very enthusiastic in something, his enthusiasm sometimes shocks others. This is the power that brought out Mr. Yao’s talents. Beacuse of this power and the full will of not-giving-up, Mr. Yao persisted in completing the great dream of 10 thousands poems. However, on the way to his success, the road was straight and bright because of his unique talents and the will of not-giving-up. This is more than enough to make one’s dreams come true.

In fact, everyone can be a hero. When one is working for his/her own dreams, he/her is a hero, a hero who can make himself/herself a hero.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

It is said that a wise head makes a close mouth. Heroes are not necessarily to be seen, many are kept anonymous and not known to others. There are many anonymous heroes all over Taiwan using their hands to create the art of life. Therefore, our team has chosen one to introduce to you.

“The silver candle lightened in Autumn chilled the screen. She pats the fireflies with a thin-material fan and looks up at the cowherd and the weaver girl...” Wow! Isn’t this poem beautiful? This poem “Qixi” by Mu Du describes the pale beauty of the autumn evening vividly in few words. The poems from Tang Dynasty are well-known in the world, some are more known by their beautiful words. Just imagining the elegant pictures can make one touch the beautiful scenes.

Therefore, the one we chose is a poet and hopefully we will learn something about the Tang poetry from him. Let’s look at the poet we interview, Teacher Zhi Yao.

In the past 4 months we had learnt a lot and also learned more about the ancient poems. At the beginning we knew nothing, even the structures and rules, but step by step, we discovered and understood. Now we can say we are “half” poets.

In fact, many occurrences are like this. As long as we look, experience, and learn, with our sincere hearts, even to feel the joy in the process. We believe that any difficulties can be overcome.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In this time, we interviewed Mr. Yao in order to know more about him. During the interviews, we learned that Mr. Yao is a man with humor and knowledge of literature, also many of his small stories. We listens to each story carefully and try to understand them. When someone is very enthusiastic in something, his enthusiasm sometimes shocks others. 4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We want to thank our principle and all the teachers who have helped us in our schools. They spent lots of time to give us information and to help us to finish all the works we need to do. Teacher Yao, he teach us using the computer skillfully. We also want to thank all the people with whom we had the interviews. They are happy about that we work on the project related to local Attractions. They think we are doing an important thing. We are very grateful to some student parents who had been giving us a hand in helping us connect with people whom we want to visit and how to do a good interview. Thanks for the help of these people.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

After four months of learning, we learned a lot and know traditional poems. At the beginning, we didn’t even know the forms and metric of a poem. After our step by step research, now we can say that we are “half” poets. Actually many things are like this, as long as we experience the fun in the process and learn from the heart, we believe that any difficulties can be overcome.
