Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Ningshan giant panda nature reserve was established in 2001 in Ningshan County, primarily for protecting the giant pandas and their habitat. It is a place featured with gorgeous mountains and ravines, and with different treasured animals living in. Covering a total of 26,732 hectares, the nature reserve is like a green jewel embedded on south of the middle section of Tsinling Mountains.

2. Summary of Our Project

This activity helped us to further realize the reason of the giant panda is also known as 'peace envoy' and 'commercial counselor.' Panda is China's national treasure, symbolizing and representing China; Panda is also of certain political significance that can narrow the distances among countries, promote friendship and mutual development; Panda is very gentle, and is symbolic of peace and solidarity; Giving pandas to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as gifts is to promote cross-strait communication and strengthen people's solidarity; 'Panda diplomacy' is akin to the 'ping pong diplomacy,' is an important diplomatic approach for Chinese government.

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The difficulties we encountered were as follows: it was difficult to confirm the topic for the activity for our limited horizons, thus we had to turn to the coaching teachers; due to the long distance of over 80 km from our school to Ningshan wildlife nature reserve, we had to visit there only at weekends; without vehicles, we also did not have any idea where to begin, also the difficulties of recording the interview, picture editing technology, information collation and skills on making web pages. Therefore, we asked the coaching teachers for help, who helped to make the interview plan and outline, and make responsibility divisions. All these did help us a lot that we saved much time, such as used the mobile phone to record the voice of the interview and edited it after we came back. As for the pictures editing and website making, we built the outline together with teachers Mr. Wu and Mr. Luo while we were studying on it. After times of modification, there finally came the fruit now. The teachers hired a microbus to lead us to visit and come back from the nature reserve within the same day, just for saving some time. Considering the safety in the open fieldwork, we girls stayed in school and waited for the videos and photos to compose writing after the boys and teachers came back from there. In short, be initiative to seek for help as well as be happy and eager to study are our magic to success.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Lacking of social experience and capability in exploration, and not good at making website, thus it was surely a miracle that we could complete this project. Of cause we hope our hard work can be paid, and mostly we do hope readers on our website can realize that: Human beings maintain infinite wisdom and creativity, so they need to constantly get training and pass on them. While we are admiring the human beings' great creations, we also need to consistently improve our quality and creativity. For example, we should protect the nature while we are developing and reconstructing it, for we have only one earth. It is a big family, in which everyone needs to live in harmony. Likewise, young people throughout the whole world should learn to protect giant pandas, and such practice can help them to learn the relationship between people and nature, as well as to realize the fact that saving the endangered species is to save ourselves.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We combined our 'The giant panda peace envoy' project with subjects in school, which did offer our project the theoretical basis. The subjects were ideology and moral character, comprehensive practice, information technology, geography and biology. In particularly, the comprehensive practice and biology provided us basic information on giant pandas, while ideology and moral character enhanced our awareness on the world, such as we learnt that the importance role that China plays in the world-wide peaceful development. So we could go smoothly when we designed the interview outline and conducted interviews, and finally successfully complete the activity. Besides, the comprehensive practice network of Jiangkou Middle School also offered us great supports.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Throughout the whole activity, we searched for relevant information through library and internet; contacted the people who would like to receive our interview with mobile phones; and during our visiting the roots carving masters in the factory, we recorded the first hand information by digital camera. We studied to manipulate Photoshop CS2 and Dreamweaver 8 software to edit pictures and build website, as well as use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to collect and sort out written materials.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the activity, we three members respectively played the roles of 'ambassadors' or 'visitor,' and conducted the interviews that each of us was responsible for. Parts of Luo Zixuan's questions in the interview were as follows: 'Can you please briefly introduce to us the main work of protecting the giant pandas?' 'Can we join in the works of that and the research?' And Zhu Wenjun's were like this: 'What is the significance of exchanging the national treasures - pandas?' 'Can you spare some time introducing more about the giant pandas?' And Ma Chengyu's were like this: 'What is the living condition of the giant pandas in the county and how large is the nature reserve?' 'What is the significance of protecting giant pandas in the county?' and 'Can we work with you on the researching work of wildlife protection in the county?' To get a true feeling on the significance of exchanging giant pandas, Luo Zixuan and Zhu Wenjun played as 'visitors,' while Ma Chengyu played as 'ambassador,' vividly having an imitative 'panda diplomacy' negotiation and finally reached a series of political and economic researching agreements. in person.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our interviews and field investigations have promoted to people to realize the fact that the local pandas were not only national treasures, but also have played an important role in national diplomacy. Therefore, we need to protect them and their living environment, to create a purely natural ecological environment for the ecological tourism in Ningshan County. Our website is not delicate enough, but it is full of our hard working on every detail, so we do hope our fruit, the website can bring people enjoyment, also more self-thinking of people's behaviors and do something for the harmonious earth.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

After we made out the planning of our project, we handed it to the school and got the approval on the implementation and gained the vehicles and expense; Ningshan County wildlife protection bureau received our interview and provided us related materials on the wildlife and giant pandas; in the filed investigation, the wildlife administrator and the local farmer guide introduced us the giant pandas' living environment and the common sense on protecting them.
