Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Cangxi, located in the southwest of China, as well as at the northern margin of Sichuan Basin and in the south of Daba Mountains, spans from 105.43E to 106.28E and from 31.37N to 32.37N. It stretches along the Jialing River for 300 miles. With clear water and beautiful mountains, it was elegantly called the “Plain Town in Northern Sichuan” in ancient times and is nobly named “Town of Green Pear” today. Furthermore, Cangxi is a famous town of couplets and calligraphy with profound calligraphic culture.

2. Summary of Our Project

Since the Scripture Crag for Happiness is the subject of our research, we have taken photos, made interviews as well as collected, sorted and studied the information of its history and current status. During that time, we got a lot of support from local teachers and administrators, and obtained a good deal of material. We try to convey the profound culture of Cangxi through our website.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We surfed the Internet through ADSL in school and at home. Four team members did not have the access to the Internet at home, and only one advisor had the access, so most of website content was completed in the computer room at school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A)Internet in school computer room is quite slow.Take every opportunity to search for information on the Internet when the computer room is unoccupied. There is always a way to solve any problem. B)Students are unfamiliar with Dreameaver8 and webpage making is new to them.Use while learning and ask teachers for help.It will be easier to use the software by learning. C)The shortage of compensation for going out for interviewsRaise funds from school and by team members themselves.Prepare sufficient money before activities and save every penny during activities. D) Little activity time for the team.Made full use of weekends and extracurricular activities.Carefully make activity plan.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through interviews and research, we have learned more knowledge of history and calligraphic art as well as how to communicate with others during activities. We shared weal and woe without considering too much about personal interests. In the spirit of the interests of the team coming before everything else, we all fully displayed our own special skills and shared resources and ideas to solve every difficulty. With the sense of ownership, we all took assigned work actively.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school earnestly carries out the spirit of quality-oriented education and actively encourages students to take part in social practical activity in their spare time. Taking the all-round development as starting point and final goal, we struggle to foster students’ practical ability and creative spirit as well as help them to set correct views on world, life, values and talent cultivation, thus making students grow up to be qualified talents needed in the construction of socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Our project research not only provides our students with ideal opportunity to practice and put knowledge into practical use, but helps students to gain knowledge and experience they cannot get from books, thus making them the masters of learning. he activity is the perfect training course for those vocational high school students majoring in computer. Although they have never experienced such activity before, it is nice that they get substantive improvement in social skills, ideological, moral quality and knowledge mastering during it. They are no longer content with going out for a look, but prefer taking part in social activities. The aims of an activity is no longer confined to producing written material, but to putting more emphasis on social influence. The project research not only made students better understand Chinese calligraphic culture and art, but inspired their love for hometown.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Dreamweaver, Word, ACDSee, Collecting material on line, Webpage upload, Technology consulting, Used for contact members, camera shooting, copy and data storage, data compilation, webpage making, search information on line, upload files

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During research, we interviewed relevant government departments and visited the Scripture Crag for Happiness, including sightseeing, listening to the introduction of administrators and local teachers. In addition, we mobilized many teachers and students to join us in the research, and then we shared research findings with all other students.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

With human’s entering the information age, the widespread of computers results in the severely loss of calligraphic art. Based on our research, we share the findings with other students and community residents, so as to make them deeply understand the unique charm of calligraphic art and get more people interested in researching it.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our materials were mainly got by visiting and interviewing. The relevant departments of county government provided us with some historical materials about the Scripture Crag for Happiness; administrators were of great help in interviews and made detail introduction for us; local teachers gave us free guide and help on life; and our school was also very supportive of our research.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We found during the research that it is not easy to research a project. Although we have many calligraphy works around us, we never go deep into them. When we deeply study them, we find much knowledge we haven’t known before, such as the history and charm of calligraphy. We have also learned that fewer people know about calligraphic culture, so we hope the project could make more people realize the charm of calligraphy.
