Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Huangyuan County is located at the foot of Riyue Mountain at the border of Loess Plateau and Tibetan Plateau. Situated on the upper reaches of the Huangshui River, it holds the fortress of “Tang-Bo Ancient Road” and the communications hub of “Silk Auxiliary Road”. Sitting at the junction of agricultural areas and pastoral areas, it is the door to pastoral region and has long been known as “Throat of Qinghai and Tibet” and “Thoroughfare of Qinghai and Tibet”.

2. Summary of Our Project

Although the City God Temple of Huangyuan is familiar to everyone in Huangyuan, and most of them have probably been there, few people know about its history. Therefore, we choose the City God Temple as our research object in order to better understand its history and ups and downs it has experienced. Through the activity, many students have better understood the history of Huangyuan as well as known about some influential historical figures. Moreover, the activity has also brought attention to the protection and protective repair of historical and cultural heritage. In addition, we want to take the opportunity to make more people know about our temple and join us to protect it.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school now has been equipped with two computer rooms with optical fiber access to the Internet.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This year we focus our research on the City God Temple. Although there are a number of resources for it, most of them are confined to brief introduction, leaving detailed information untouched. When sorting the resources we have collected at the request of the teacher, we find that the collected resources are almost the same. So the teacher has to reassign collecting tasks in a more detailed way. We finally get some useful information after many setbacks. Then we begin to make our web pages with these resources. Since we have to spend much time to sort information at noon, it will probably result in misunderstanding of other teachers. However, we will study harder to prove with excellent grades that we do not fall behind in study. Owing to frequently network failure, we have to type texts on computers and then input them into web pages when the Internet access is available. In addition, we always have much work to do in school, so it is really a challenge for us to make web pages well at the same time. Moreover, our guidance teachers are busy with work, but they always take troubles to help us with the web pages. Here we would like to express our gratitude to them.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The activity brings us more chances to get access to computers, so we have got great improvement in computer competence. Moreover, we have learned how to make web pages, process pictures and flash. Most of all, the activity has made us better understand the historical culture of the City God Temple and love our hometown more deeply.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We mainly study some written knowledge in school, but the research allows us to put the knowledge into practical use. In this way, we can not only master some computer knowledge, but improve our practical ability. Although we have encountered many difficulties along the way, we have learned much new knowledge and known more about our hometown. In short, we have benefited a lot from the activity. In traditional mode of teaching, we are only taught the knowledge in books and asked to do homework on exercise books, but Internet has changed the situation. We can get more knowledge and different opinions through it. For example, in the past, we were only taught some knowledge in books and had little knowledge about historical figures and events. Now we can get more knowledge through the Internet, thus making the study more interesting.

Project Elements

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In terms of knowledge sharing and combination, our research team, assisted by the teachers and students of grade nine, has extended our research results to over 600 teachers and students all over the school on the basis of routine courses of grade nine, so as to make them know about the local culture. Afterwards we compile the research content into regional textbooks for resource sharing.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1) Improving ability to find out and solve problems. (2) Getting familiar with the approaches to use technological facilities like digital camera, video camera and so on. (3) Discovering the charm of hometown; knowing about the place through its local culture; and we have found that the traditional culture in our life is so interesting and attractive. (4) Learning to communicate with other people: as young reporters, students have learned how to communicate with other people in interviews.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

First, we would like to thank our two guide teachers – Qi Haiyan and Pu Haiping for their great help in our activity. Every day they would help us not only with designing work like picture processing, website constructing and making, but with meeting, interview and investigation in their lunch break. And we also want to express our gratitude for their generosity in offering us digital cameras and information. In addition, we would like to thank leaders, Teacher Fu and other teachers in our school for their great support. Without their help, we couldn’t finish the activity smoothly. They persuaded our teachers to give us enough time to collect information, conduct investigation and construct website. Moreover, we would like to thank those old men and the aunt from the tourist service center for their cooperation in interview and telling us so many stories and cultural activities. Besides, we feel more grateful to all employees from Qianxiangwancai Company for their help with website construction. Owing to the help from all those people, we could finish the project successfully. Of course, everyone in the team has made essential contribution as well. All people mentioned above have played important roles in today’s achievements.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through the research project, we who used to study in classroom have broadened our horizons and learned more knowledge through the Internet. We yearn to see the world outside the mountain in person. While collecting information, we have improved our social skills, learned how to make web pages and process pictures, as well as increased our knowledge about hometown and understood the importance of protecting historical and cultural heritage. However we feel regret to see the murals in the City God Temple dropping piece by piece and becoming unrecognizable. We hope our research project will call on more people to protect and repair the temple. With the development of our research, we have known more about the history of the City God Temple and stories about it. Let’s go deeper into the culture of our hometown and love it more deeply. During the research, we are used to working out the problems in cooperation. In addition, we have learned the importance of mutual understanding, encouragement, communication and responsibility in the research. Moreover, we have also learned that team cooperation is the guarantee to the success of research.
