Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In rural China today, especially in some undeveloped and poor rural areas, more and more young people go to cities for work to increase income and raise their living standard. As a result, a special group of juveniles come into being called 'left-behind children.' With the development of the society and people's increased conscious on children's education, these left-behind children will move back and forth between their hometowns and the cities where their parents work at the intervals of holidays. Such seasonal migrations as the birds bring them another name of the little migratory birds.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our investigation found that the left-behind children in rural areas would suffer troubles physically and psychologically. To help them out, it is needed the joint efforts from families, school, society and government.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school is in rural area, and out of the economic limitation, the computers and network equipment are very poor. The best equipment of computers is P4 2.6G. And the network in school is accessed through ADSL at the speed of 2M, equipped with computers allotted in each office, thus each computer works very slowly. For students, none of us owns a personal computer.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Firstly, because of extremely lacking of equipment, we have tried our best to borrow for using, and renting was our last straw. Secondly, the network was rather poor that I often had to skip over the rush hour of school officing to conduct the research. Thirdly, it was difficult to communicate with parts of students who were reluctant to open their hearts to us that we had to try some more times. Besides, we have met difficulties in taking photos, especially the ones secretly taken in the internet bar. Fourthly, our time was pretty tight that we took full advantage of our holidays or weekends in carrying on our feature activity.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the past several months, we did gain a lot although we were very tired. For example, our hearts have been purified for we have learned so many true stories that may of inspiration or touching. We were hilarious for their success, and sorrow for their unhappy family. In addition, we have learned much knowledge that in classes fail to, such as communication skills, photo photographing and website making.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Quality education is, in term of goals, to comprehensively improve all students' ideological and ethical standards and the educational, scientific and cultural qualities, as well as physical and psychological qualities. It was this feature activity that led students out of the traditional classes and into society, to participate in practical experience, build their social abilities, team work spirits, exploring and identifying abilities, and to form correct views on life and values, as well as purify their hearts.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: computer, digital camera, scanning, U disk, switch, software We searched information with Explorer browser, processed photos with Windows photo and fax reader, and transmitted materials with Leap FTP.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We students in this team are all left-behind children. Thus we have something in common despite of our different living experience. So we talked with them about life, study, dream, parent and family. We were not only interviewers in this activity, but also interviewees.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our activity is not to set an example or a guiding. We conducted investigation and communication with many left-behind children, writing down these stories, to make more people clearly see these children's psychological health and study, feel their living and touch their hearts. We are also in great hope of the participation of the society, as long as everyone contributes a little, the left-behind children will not be left behind any more. Instead, as the future of this country, they will bloom as followers. Our activity won wide praise from the society.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We are grateful of the Youth League Committee in Huacong Middle School for organizing this activity. We are grateful of secretary office and teaching affair office in Huacong Middle School for offering us rich data and materials. We are grateful of every students received our interviews. We wish all of you are healthy, happy and make great progress in study.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We successfully completed our feature activity. During the investigation, we did encounter many difficulties, also we worked as a great team to collect many true stories and work out our feature works. Throughout the whole activity, we spared no efforts to help anyone in need. In great sincerity and passion, we looked forward to receiving more attention on this group of children, and partial and correct knowledge on them and the problems they are faced with. Also we have gained a lot although what we did might be not enough.
