Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local community is located in the heart of the town of Riverhead. We a small parochial school affiliated with the larger Diocese of Rockville center. The students come from various communities around Riverhead. Riverhead is 90 minutes away from the large city of New York. Our community is rural and small surrounded by water. the ocean is on the south and the Long Island Sound is on the north. Our community is considered rural and we are surrounded by agricultural farms. Riverhead is home to a large group of Eastern European immigrants. Recent immigrants have grown to include people from Central American countries who are new to our area.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project is to tell the story of the Big Duck. The Big Duck is a Historical landmark that reflects a part of the history of the East End of Long Island where we live. WE will be sharing a part of the history of our community and the history of the type of architecture the Big Duck is. As big and silly as it may be, it is a reminder of the local history and of the economic value the Duck farms had in our area.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Some of the problems we had to overcome was the time that was available for us to meet.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The International Cyber Fair has helped us to realize how easily we can communicate with other students around the world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our Cyber fair project addressed the Common Core Standards that have recently been implemented in New York State. We incorporated the used of technology to build researched based learning skills. Working on the Cyber fair made us 'flip' the classroom. The teacher and the students learned as we worked in depth on our project.

WE learned how to manipulate other programs into the program guidelines. We worked collaboratively and learned how to listen to each others concepts and created a common vision.

We better understand the idea of team work and team building.

The project follows New York State Common Core standards guidelines for research based learning that incorporates technology. It follows the ELA standards for writing and fact based learning.

We discovered that our educational system does not always allow for innovative projects that enhance students learning. Too much emphasis is placed on testing.

Yes, using the internet has been more effective than traditional lessons. It increses studetn awareness of the resources availabel to them.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used 4 laptops Ipads for recording video and reseraching on the Internet Software - Powerpoint, Apps, Wix. com web building site The Bick Duck historical association as a resource and an oral interview with the doscent of the Big Duck

These tools helped us in the research and building of our web site. These tools were available at our school Some toold were given to the school as part of a grant The most helpful technologies were the MS Office programs and the online free web program.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students presented the project in front of their peers. They will be presenting the project at a student fair held by the local district support group. Eadtern Suffolk Boces Model Schools. The project will be seen by their peers and other schools teachers and administrators. They will be showing their project on social media.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project will make a difference in the perception of the function of a local historical landmark. People in our community will realize that bedsides being oan oddity the Big Duck is a reflection of our community's past and the culture involved with duck farming in our area.

We have begun speaking to government officials who are in charge of preserving the Big Duck. We have not yet received any feedback The school community as well as the larger Riverhead and Southampton Community has been very open to publicizing our project.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our helpers were the Southampton town officials in charge of the Big Duck.
