Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The local community we reserached in the proejct is Yuan-li Township. The township, well-known for “Bare of Miao-Li”, is located in the southwestern Miao-li county. Also, the town,Yuan-li, is one of the earliest development ones in Miao-li county. The name of Yuan-li derives from the Wanrie of Taokas in Pingpu Tribes.

2. Summary of Our Project

This report is themed around “Local Business Figures”, with the Chairman of Mentor International Co., Ltd., Mr. Lai Hsiao-Yi as the main character. It is divided into 4 sections namely “Origin of Dreams, Building Dreams Into Reality, Dreams Come True, Inheriting Dreams”, introducing how he upheld the assiduous and sturdy spirit to create a business empire consisting of more than five hundred hairdressing salons. Besides having a steadfast attitude, he selflessly trained up lower-level hairdressers, and made a great contribution to the national economy. Now, let’s explore the course of Mr. Lai’s endeavors in combination with his dreams.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The problem that we encountered, apart from team communications and inconsistent working hours, was web creation technology, which was a big challenge. Using web creation and other related software took up a lot of our time, and it was only after guidance from many teachers that we overcame the problem. Separately, in respect of contacting the person for the topic page, we had to overcome our psychological obstacles to successfully interview with the person and complete our work due to rarely socializing with the public.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The biggest gain of our team is having a better understanding and practical experience of the pluralistic society, a result which develops our perspectives towards the understanding of the Hairdressing Industry. As it is, the shampoo girls who wash our hair every day can one day have their own careers, become their own bosses and operate their own businesses. This fact further proves that “every trade has its master”!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

During the process of having an interview with Chairman Lai Hsiao-Yi, we closely observe and interview this well-respected elder in the hairdressing industry. We deeply hope that, through this project on the topic page about him, we can let more people know about his course of struggle. Also, our team members comprehend about how he began from an apprenticeship by holding a pair of scissors in his hand. Relying on superb haircut skills and the philosophy of the pursuit of beauty, Mr. Lai carves out a reputation for Mentor Hair Stylist Co., creating for younger people with dreams the stage for best leaning and for pursuing dreams.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Students use different types of the information tools and technologies to help themselves complet the project. Those are wireless recording digital pen, personal USB, digital camera, cellphones(iPhone and HTC), and FTP.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The research motive of this project is due to an idea – “The Ultimate Goal of Studying is the Workplace”. We decided to explore the situation at the workplace for cosmetology department students from our school's rotational cooperative education classes. It was coincidental that one of the instructors happened to travel together with the Chairman of Mentor International Co., Ltd. when she participated in the “Mainland Delegation for Cooperative Education Careers”, so we determined to do more research on this hairdressing industry heavyweight. After making several contacts, our team members finally conducted this interview at the flagship store in Kaohsiung, which allowed high school students like us an insight into this distinguished local entrepreneur and his success attributes when interacting with others.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We benefited a lot from our participation in this competition on the thematic style of exploration learning. In addition to being more familiarized with the application of information technology, we are also more sophisticated in internet use, webpage design and computer graphics tools skills. Although we had suffered many setbacks, the teachers and all the team members surmounted them one by one, persevering to the end. What was more important was the communications between the team, cooperation and tolerance, which allowed us to become intimate comrade-in-arms from ordinary classmates, and productive knowledge contributors from passive consumers of knowledge. This is a gain unexpected in a lifetime.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Before starting to interview the Local Leader, Chairman Lai Hsiao-Yi , our team members really lacked of confidence in whether we could successfully contact Mr. Lai or not. It was coincidental that one of the instructors happened to travel together with the Chairman of Mentor International Co., Ltd. when she participated in the “Mainland Delegation for Cooperative Education Careers”, so we determined to do more research on this hairdressing industry heavyweight. After making several contacts with Director Zhang of the Mentor Hair Stylist Co., our team members finally conducted this interview at the flagship store in Kaohsiung, which allowed high school students like us an insight into this distinguished Local Entrepreneur and his success attributes when interacting with others.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process of participating in the production of this project, we deeply felt that the application of scientific and technological information and the internet was much wider than we imagined. In order to overcome the limitations of time and space, we set up a community on Facebook. In addition to meeting and working regularly at the school's computer lab, we discussed directly on Facebook at home, abandoning the traditional telephone. Our team members each checked and reviewed the sections they are in charge of, and discussed online directly when there are any questions. It felt like a classroom that opens for 24 hours, leading us to break away from traditional thinking and embark on the broad and boundless internet online learning. Among us, there was a classmate who lived in Taipei gathering with his family, but it was not affected at all. Even during consecutive holidays and 4 hours away from our school location (Kaohsiung), all he needed to do is access to the internet and we were connected together!
