Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan is located in the west of Taiwan Strait. It is a bridge that connects the Pacific Ocean and China. Since the business between every country has become much busier, the ports developed quickly, and Kaohsiung plays an important part in it. Kaohsiung was called takau in the languages of Makatto (the aborigine who once lived in Kaohsiung) which are the thorny bamboo forest to defeat pirates. Until Japanese colonic rule, Japanese rewrote '??' as Koahsiung with the assonance of 'takau', carrying out the assonance in 1920. The government of the postwar Taiwan rewrote '??' as 'Kaohsiung' with Wade-Giles system which is the mainly name around the world then.

2. Summary of Our Project

In the busy life, it’s really important to know our original homeland, and to feels the happiness. Since the government had declared to removal to Taiwan, it has been several generations. Everything is changing; no longer are bullets or wars, but all the memories our treasure. Not only to think of the history, but to know our country, to know where we came, to understand the difficulties that they have to be overcome. We want to tell everyone that we are proud of the military dependents' village, we hope to show people all around the world, the history is changing, and we have to do something, for our dear hometown. This, is the reason why we choose the military dependents' village to be our topic.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Q1.We spent too much time on thinking the design of web, and the writing, so the time was not that abundant, these made us really nervous.

A1.Sacrificing much of our spare time, and seniors from time to time to supervise us, we finally got back to the right track.

Q2.Because teammate in the technology group is fewer, they need to afford much personal work. And instrument group has a problem that we have to spend more time to put articles in order.

A2.Technology group spent much time finishing their work on winter vacation. And everyone who was in the instrument group was busy transacting the programs and solving problems.

Q3.Everyone wants to make the website better, so sometimes we were too noisy.

A3.Our relations are still quite close, so we tried many times to find the way to make the page better.

Q4.In technologic aspects, sometimes the version does not pass or cannot find the problems in web page layouts or programs. And in instrument aspects, we don’t know how to assign the framework, the number of articles and even about translations.

A4.The seniors constantly provide their experiences and examples ,and teachers also tell us the mistakes about websites that we need to check.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

I am glad that I have this opportunity to do this project with my friends. At first, we do only want to win the contest, but finally we found out, things we worked for was not the contest only, the main thing we were doing is to find out and to share the original culture in Taiwan. We hope everyone throughout the world could know there is a small but unique village on the Earth.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through our on-the-spot interview, we can much more realize what our history was. It is the best experience to use and get knowledge by joining in” Global School Net”.

Students in Taiwan sometimes are called “bookworms”, because we not only have to go to school in normal time, but also need to go to cram school after school, so people often take us as nerds. But in the” Global School Net” competition, we went out of our school, we put down our book, we closed to society. We learned more interviewing skills and communicating ability, these things made us change a lot. We got to see touching things and historic value, thinking about the background in that time, we knew the history was more precious than other things for Taiwanese. The vivid history will not be taught by school, but we got it by our footstep!

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Undoubtedly, computer is an absolute tool, collating information, articles, and do pages have to rely on it included. Phone and Internet massager are a excellent helpers of our communication. In addition, the camera is also indispensable . FTP be used to upload information of the school by us and that the FLASH CS5 and NAMO are used to make illustrations, too.

FrontPage, and DreamweaverCS5 are used to create web pages. Photo impact are used to produced illustrations and that flash slideshow maker used to make a slideshow similarly. What’s more, videostudio is used to modify portraits. All the software items are provided by school.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

What is the impact we faced during making this project?

On the Christmas Eve, we paid the villages a visit. Finally, we found the most worth Christmas gifts there. Though we see the fact they will face, and we were sad about it, we still heard some toughing stories. After tripping, we realized that the words we saw were not only in the book, but also alive in the village. However, we also found out those stories can only be the past, it could not see in the future anymore.

After we finished the project, our the motivation is not only for the contest, but for sharing the forgotten history and the beautiful culture to everyone.

Now, we got lost in these magic villages. Next year, the village may not stand in there anymore.

We wish the we would get lost in the village forever. To remember the past, the treasures belong to us.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In our process of interview, we heard the voices from settlers and volunteers; they wanted to tell stories in military dependents’ village to any other city. We made raft of interview in our report, in addition to landscape-description, the more were about settlers and our touching feeling. We believe we can let everyone see the honor of our homeland!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to out seniors helping, we can soon knew how the do the project.

We are so glad that we were so lucky to meet these villagers. Thank them were willing to told us their past, the sad story. And let us knew a lot of things which were already forgotten, they told us a lot of history they faced. Also, they made us know what difficulty both them and us may face in the future. Plus, they show us the things could only seen in the military housing. Thank them very much, to let us know many things that we did not have chance to see in the past. Therefore, we strongly know we need to share these things with everybody.

Another people we need to thank to is the volunteers who works in the museum to told us more things about this village from their eye.

The last thing I need to thank is our team, thanks them working hard since the beginning till the end.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Our founds, realization, and surprises. We were just the novices when we began to do this contest; however, through this special experience, we have learned lots of things and spread our view.

Since the start of ignorance, we have done many meaningful things instead, collecting information, interview, writing articles, setting up websites, making flash…… In the process, we were not very peaceful; the more was the lack of times; we just like the small boat, suffering the horrible storm, it was really nervous! But under the storm, we found the enthusiasm to the culture of the military dependent village. Websites were set up by our hard efforts, we just wanted to let the beauty reappear, and we use sweat and laughing, want to show the magic of the military dependent village.
