Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school locates in Taipei city and it’s also one members of an international city in this global village. The convenience of public transportation and excellent educational environment so that many people of indigenous people come to Taipei to complete their dream of future. The combination of modern indigenous culture makes indigenous people’s culture to become one feature of Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

The topic of this project arises from our Chinese textbook and school-based curriculum. This semester many parts of the content mention thing about culture of indigenous people. After reading things about indigenous people, students seem to be so interested in it. So we hope that thought this project, we could know more about history, culture, contribution, experience and tradition of indigenous people in Taiwan.

The Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines was established in 1994 as a specialist museum founded on the collection and display of artifacts of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. It is dedicated to promoting mutual understanding between different ethnic groups, through careful research, preservation and explanation of the essence of Aboriginal cultures. The museum also has a special exhibition room where related exhibitions are held at regular intervals to broaden visitor’s field of concern, and to present the many faces of indigenous peoples’ culture.

The location of this museum is very close to our school. It’s just like our library of knowledge of indigenous people and we could look up for information anytime we need. We hope to make more people get to know more about this museum, so we go to collect data, visit the museum, interview people and experience by ourselves to achieve this goal. Furthermore we hope that we could decrease people’s bias and sstereotype of indigenous people in Taiwan and help them to earn more understanding and respect.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

a. Students have problem introducing a topic systematically. The students all agree that Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines is such a great place for people to get to know different cultures of indigenous people in Taiwan and it's also a place worthy introducing. But they have no idea about how to introduce it to others systematically. To solve this problem, teachers guide them to surf the internet to see how people introduce a place to other people. As a result, the students have an idea about how to finish this project.

b. Students have problem using computers. Team members from our team are all 3rd graders. They have problem using computers, such as editing photos, typing, and building a website. So we made a plan to teach students these skills step by step.

c. Students have little time left. Students in Taiwan have to go to cram school through Mon. to Fri. That’s why Students have little time left. So we apply for a free sky drive and a blog for students to upload data or materials little by little.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

This is the first time for students to take part in this activity. After finishing this project, the students finally learn to know how to cooperate with each other and also learn that unite we stand and divided we fall.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

01.Our project is a content-based project. We hope to help this museum through this project and arise more people to pay attention to this museum. 02.There is one lesson in our Chinese textbook and some part of our school-based lesson that talks about our community and introduce students about indigenous people. 03.We learn how to organize our content and to how to make use of our own specialty to finish this project. 04.Unite we stand divided we fall. 05.We try to find the most special feature of this topic and try to gather more information about it. 06.This project is related to our Chinese lessons and school-based curriculum. 07.The textbook could only provide us fragments of knowledge. If we want to get knowledge as a whole, we should try to get more information by ourselves. This is the reason why we want to do this project. 08.The answer is definitely yes. With the internet, we would gather various information and learn things that we are interested by ourselves anytime, anywhere.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

01. The tools we have used are as following. They are 6 laptop computers, telephones, digital cameras, scanners, digital tape recorders, Microsoft Office, Photo Impact, libraries, books, newspapers, museums and oral interviews. 02. They help us to digitalize documents and photos easily. 03. We locate through schools, parents, teachers, classmates and friends. 04. No, we borrow those tools from schools, parents, teachers, classmates or friends. 05. I think the laptop computer is the most valuable tool. It is because we could type, edit document, modifying photos by it. 06. Internet is the most helpful technology. It helps a lot for us to gather information that we need for this project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The reason why we choose this museum is because some part of our Chinese lessons and school-based curriculum is related to the indigenous culture and many of the students seems to be so interested in this top. So we decide to find more information about indigenous culture. When surfing the internet, we find that there is a museum which is called Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines nearby. After discussing, we decide to make a phone call to tell the museum about our visit. While knowing our goal is to make more people to know this museum, their director welcomes us to visit them.

After visiting Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines, we find their passion on culture and education. Most important, the content of what they display is so meaningful and worthy promoting. We decide to make a project about this museum.

In Taiwan, most people are not so interested in going to museums. The main problem of this museum is that there are so many people want to visit them.

If we could do the project and make more people to know their feature, I think it helps for them to attract more visitors. More over, we also provide visitors other information in their neighborhood.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

01.Yes, we will let more people to know things about indigenous people and the feature of this museum. 02.Yes, people of my community learn more knowledge of indigenous people and they also know the existence of this museum. 03.Yes, they know that there is such a good place to go during their free time. 04.We established new working relationship with people in our community and they are so helpful if we needed some tools like digital tape recorder. 05.Besides the students, their parents and other school teachers also looked our website. 06.We gained some positive feedback from the staff of that museum and also form the people in our community. 07.We make people in our community know thing about this museum and also provide them information to go during the weekend in the neighborhood of this museum.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We asked them for providing tools for making website of Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines. Sometimes if we need some place for discussion, we would also ask for assistance. What’s more, if sometimes our parents are too busy to visit the museum with us, other parents we know in our community would be so kind as to take us there and help us to think of questions to ask the director and volunteer of that museum.

We really appreciate their help. With their help, we don’t have some many problems to overcome. In the future, if they need our help, we would also be so willing to help them in return.
