Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

“Din Tai Fung” was first established in Yungkang Business District- the famous food district in Taipei. The central area of Yungkang Business District is Yungkang Park, and this district is bordered by Yungkang Street, Lishu Street, Jinhua Street, the intersection of Yungkang Street, and Xinyi Road Sec. 2. There are varieties of delicious food that we can enjoy in this business district. There are Taiwanese traditional snacks, Chinese noodles, desserts, international cuisines, coffee shops, Taiwanese ice shaving, and so on. The main store of Din Tai Fung on Xinyi Road is always overcrowded during mealtimes. That is also an amazing sight in Yungkang Business District.

2. Summary of Our Project

Originally, Din Tai Fung was an oil store. In the 70’s, the business of Din Tai Fung Oil Store was impacted from mass production of the oil dressing. Consequently, Din Tai Fung started to sell dumplings(Xiao Long Bao). However, they never thought that providing excellent quality of food and service could bring Din Tai Fung into a famous food kingdom all over the world. Din Tai Fung has successfully developed from a small dumpling store into a international business. Throughout time, Din Tai Fung has its own beliefs, transitions, and success. This research will discuss the insistence and efforts Din Tai Fung have made to create an international brand of “dumplings”. Our data reviewed the activities we did in this project, such as the food critiques, questionnaire analysis, personal interviews, and field trips.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Currently, the school has sufficient server host servers, and each classroom owns a desktop and internet access. There is an IT department in the school to provide teachers and students a convenient and multi-service network environment with website, mail, and so on. In order to participate in this CyberFair competition, students use their extra-time, study hall time, or after school time to set up the website. Students upload the website page to FTP server of the school to enable students to modify WebPages at home and produce WebPages more smoothly.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Obtain the permit: Din Tai Fung is busy and successful in the food business. How to obtain its consent was the first problem to be dealt with by us. Thank for the assistance from Rebecca’s mother. We were able to obtain Din Tai Fung’s approval and contact the PR manager of Din Tai Fung through Facebook. In addition, Rebecca’s mother also helped us pass our research plan to the managers of Din Tai Fung, so they could review our plan. Finally, we obtained the permit for our visit to Din Tai Fung. Rebecca’s mother had also assisted us to collect the first hand information and accomplish the relevant activities of this project. 2.Arrange the visit: How to complete the interview and collect all the necessary information for our study within a very limited period as well as to give a good impression to Din Tai Fung were the second challenge. We not only divided into several small groups to prepare the appropriate questions for the interview, but also rehearsed the situation that would likely to happen during the interview. We also sought for our parents’ assistance to make the photographs and videos, and record the complete process of this activity. 3.Service training: We had never provided services to anyone before, so we were very worried about the assigned service works to the students from Ci-Sain Elementary School. We were lucky to have Ms. Hung and Manager Hu teach and guide us how to serve the guests in the restaurant. We worked hard to practice all the steps, including greeting, introducing the menu, providing the souse, and saying good-bye to the guests. We memorized the content of the menu and practiced several times after our visit to Din Tai Fung. Eventually, we successfully provided and accomplished our services.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Din Tai Fung’s serious attitude and professionalism has brought them a huge success. Din Tai Fung insists on making every effort to achieve success, which inspired us to produce an awesome work.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

1.People interview: We interviewed every manager of every department to understand the business concept, managing system, and operating system of Din Tai Fung. 2.Visit and check in person:We visited the 101 store to see the service procedure, and we also went to the central kitchen to see the food producing process. Then we learned more about the operating system at Din Tai Fung. 3.Experience it in person: We watched and learned the basic service procedure and the manner to greet costumers, and we were able to actually serve the costumers. 4.Charity activity: We invited Din Tai Fung to sponsor the students from Ci-Sain Elementary School to eat at Din Tai Fung. While enjoying the delicious dishes, students from Ci-Sain Elementary School also experienced the excellent service from us. 5.Making the webpage: People will learn more about Din Tai Fung from the webpage.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We also planned a charity activity in our project. Through the arrangement of I-Dian Foundation, Din Tai Fung and we invited 50 students and teachers from Ci-Sain Elementary School to enjoy a free meal. We paid for the transportation and provided the service in the restaurant, and Din Tai Fung was in charge of the meals. We learned many valuable lessons through this experience. Serving was hard and tough. Din Tai Fung believed, “The best service is all about the details.” It was important to think about costumers all the time. If we thought on step before costumers, we would have provided better services. Although it was a challenging experience, we had a great feeling of joy and achievement. When we provided the service to them, we could see the satisfaction on their faces. We were satisfied with ourselves. We were also proud that we had the abilities to help other people.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

1. Rebecca’s mother: Contact and arrange the interview and the visit to Din Tai Fung. 2.Owner of Din Tai Fung, Mr. Yang Chi-Hwa: Accept the interview, show us the concept, and share with us the successful experience of Din Tai Fung. 3.P. R. Manager, Ms. Hu: Arrange the interview and the visit. 4.Deputy Head of the central kitchen, Mr. Ko: Brief us the history and the information of Din Tai Fung. Take us to visit the central kitchen. 5.Manager Ms. Wu Cha-Fei and the staffs of 101 store: Give us the service training and provide the place and meals for Ci-Sain Elementary School. 6.Manager Mr. Lee Chu-Hwa: Accept the interview, and let us know the managing skills and methods of each Din Tai Fung store. 7.Chef Mr. Chang Don-Chai: Accept the interview, show us the front kitchen, and teach us how to roll the dough. 8.Chef A-Shan: Accept the interview, and lead us to see the back kitchen. 9.Director of service team, Ms. Huang Kuan-Ling: Accept the interview, and teach us how to serve costumers properly. 10.All the team members’ parents: Help us with video and audio taping, recording, and taking pictures of all the interviews and visits. Lead the team and provide transportations.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

An expensive restaurant is our first impression of Din Tai Fung. After the interviews and visits to the central kitchen and the restaurant, we have realized that Din Tai Fung insists in every detail. It takes every effort to provide the best food and service for costumers. In that case, I suddenly find out it is not expensive at all. Din Tai Fung insists the quality of food and the food producing process. It insists in every step and every detail. Din Tai Fung even has a food quality control department to check its food. The “Xiao Long Bao” (dumpling)is not just a Xiao Long Bao. It contains all the efforts of Din Tai Fung members. Apart of the delicacy, their manners and attitudes of serving impress me the most. They keep smiling all the time. They serve and talk to customers nicely and patiently. They also observe customers carefully and provide the best service customers need. They care about all the details. They provide not only the best food but also good eating moments and memories.
