Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tumenguan is a county in Huanzhong Town, Xining City, Qinghai Province, 26km from Xining, the capital of Qinhai. People count on the weather, since it is located in Nanshan area. There's little irrigation to the mountains and dry-land. The main crops are soybeans, wheat, rapeseed, and potatoes. Main source of the people here rely on crops, or work outside. However it is a good place in summer where people are honest and modest.

2. Summary of Our Project

This traditional Chinese art is facing a severe test with the impact of films, television programs, cartoons, pop music and other styles of modern culture delivering methods. The art which has been brilliant in history now is being marginalized or even facing extinction. Hailed as 'one sentence to tell histories, two hands to call up a million soldiers,' the shadow play has a glorious past. What is the status now? We hope to reinforce the protection of the intangible cultural heritage by this interview.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1, Lack of experience. Students didn't know much about the contest. Students got information of the contest and developed the plan by discussing with Teacher Li and Teacher Lv on net. 2,Unskilled of computer operation, lack of basic skills of web pages. Because the participating students are new, their levels of computer technology are different, and their skills learn computer with each other are not enough. Teacher Lv has helped with the guidance kindly. The guiding teachers provided their free time to teach computer skills, especially on web-pages. Students made use of spare time to help learning with each other. 3,There was a big conflict between students' school time and active time, so the schedule was tight and the interviews were few. Little spare time. Hard to meet with Mr. Zhang Xianliang. Less time to do investigation. In order to make good use of spare time, the guiding teachers contacted the person by phone in advance to pay a visit successfully. 4,Messed up in materials. The practicing students were too busy to arrange orderly under the time pressure, who participated in the competition the first time with no experience. The guiding teachers led the students by related materials and web-pages. Students communicated with each other in the exchange district of the contest.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

For our students, to study is the first duty. But if we kept staying in the classroom reading, we would only say instead of do. We are facing the informational society, where we can get a lot of information. However, what accesses to television programs and other media resources can only make us lazy. Our current research activities not only provided personally experience but also a further thought. Although this activity has not solved any substantive issues, there are still many gains, just like the saying by Mao Zedong, 'do it yourself, and have ample food and clothing'. We understand that learning is not just in the classroom and from books, as long as we learn, the knowledge can be learned everywhere. We knew the purpose and direction from guidance to avoid more troubles. We have known the method though we are still with less experience. Finally, it is more practical than we though from the interviews. To do is better than not to, so is to learn. (by Cao Deqing)

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We have learnt some basic knowledge in class. So we focused on practice during our study of this subject, to connect knowledge with practice. We have called to protect this precious non-material cultural heritage after well understanding of shadow plays through comprehensive practical activities from extra-curricular. We have not only mastered the computer knowledge, but also exercise our social practice. We have learnt from difficulties to enhance our understanding of this non-material cultural heritage, which we knew less about, and then we called on people to protect it from slowly fading away. At last we did benefit a lot.
