Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Bandung, the capital of West Java, located about 180 kilometres (110 mi) southeast of Jakarta, is the third largest city in Indonesia. Its elevation is 768 metres (2,520 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by up to 2,400 m (7,874 ft) high Late Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic terrain. There are more than 7.4 million people live in Bandung. It is also called the 2nd largest metropolitan area in Indonesia. This is a result of a strategic government planning to enhance the role of tourism, trade, hotel and restaurant. It successfully increased its per capita income, and automatically the urbanization can’t be stopped and will continue to be chosen by people who have no skill as a the destination of urbanization. The situation creates the problems that need serious handling. One of these is garbage management, both household garbage and industrial waste. As we know, big cities always have a lot of rubbish. Bandung as a big city also has to overcome the problem. More population, more concern needed because it can cause more rubbish, and more pollution. Therefore, the community awareness to reduce the waste is needed. By doing 3R – Reduce, Recycle, Reuse will greatly help the trash problem and it can also create jobs and increase per capita income. As good citizens we must try to think of the ways to manage it better and actively engage to solve the environmental problems. Teachers as educators at school have a responsibility to start to introduce the issues of environment to the students and raise their awareness to their natural world. The implementation of 3 R project is one of the efforts to make the students understand the importance of 3 R and its benefit to the environment and community.

2. Summary of Our Project

Recycling is the process of separating, collecting and remanufacturing or converting used or waste products into new materials. The recycling process involves a series of steps to produce new products. Recycling helps extend the life and usefulness of something that has already served its initial purpose by producing something that is useable. Recycling has a lot of benefits and importance not only to us humans but especially to our planet. Recycling saves the earth, recycling saves energy, recycling helps mitigate global warming and reduce pollution, Recycling reduces waste product in Landfills. (http://www.benefits-of-recycling.com/whyisrecyclingimportant.html, accessed 17th October, 2011) Therefore it is beneficial to conduct the project to enhance students’ understanding in particular and other people who read the research paper understanding in general on the importance of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle program and its benefit to the environment. The project is going to describe the implementation of 3 R Program which is conducted by some of Bandung residents, to find out the positive effects gained from the 3 R program performed by some of residents in Bandung and the challenges which may be faced by the residents who conduct the 3 R program to socialize it to other people. The populations of this research will be the residents of Bandung who conducted the 3 R program in their neighborhood. There will be three production houses of recycling product in Bandung which will be investigated. Data is going to be collected by using observation, interview and data collection.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school has wireless internet access facilty which is very helpful for teachers and students to find references in the process of teaching and learning.Teachers can also connect with other schools in different cities and countries to expand knowledge, share ideas and enhance cultural understanding.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The project is very beneficial for students to have the opportunity to experience some of the problems related to recycling in the home and in the community and try to find the resolution of it. However, there were some challenges which faced by the teachers and students during the process of the implementation of the projects, i.e: The lack of school support in financial, the inadequate knowledge in technology , especially blogging and the managing of time to coordinate between teachers and students.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The study emphasizes the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling with a particular focus on the significance of respecting the environment and being good stewards of the earth. The students are expected to understand the importance of caring for the earth by creating less trash, reusing the household or other items when they can, and recycle. It is also claimed that the project is significant in that (i) the findings from the study are hoped to be useful for the government, environment observer, educator, students and the society who concern on environmental issue in providing information of the implementation of 3R in local context (Bandung, Indonesia ) (ii) to expand the knowledge for considerations of the implementation of 3 R program for the society who concern on environmental issue and (iv) to add the literature of environment, especially the implementation of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our school has done several projects related to how to save the environment. From these projects we also follow several national and international competitions. Doing those projects involve students from various grade levels, are also teachers of environmental education, local educational content, as well as English as a language introduction to publish it.

All of these projects refer to the applicable curriculum is inseparable from the vision and mission of the school. The curriculum emphasizes the educational character of the nation that the result of all teaching and learning activities is caring and loving our homeland and nation.

These projects really need to be done with great earnestness by educational institutions especially at the middle school age children. They are very keen for all to know, all wanted to try something new. Our students also participate in socialized of environmental saving project by dividing into several groups. Why are we doing in groups, because these different activities and research are also applied by taking different places. More effective doing in group.

We realized that to make a change is not easy, we need cooperation with others, in this case with another lesson, another department as well as those who enthusiastically supported the project.

In implementing this project we previously provided basic education in schools, which can be applied at the students environment. To do this project we are also working with environmental agencies in our local area. They provided several process of saving the environment, the processing of municipal solid waste problem, and pollution reduction.

Increasingly rapid technological advances as a source is very effective in search of data, process and propagandize our environment saving project, also make us as the part of the global community.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Our school has been facilitated by, 64 computers type Core 2 Duo, 2 planes telephone, video and digital camera 2, 3 digitizers and scanners, tape recorder in some language learning in particular subjects, 5 Cu-see me videos, 1 computer software, 1 library, many books and newspapers, 2 oral interviews, but we have no museum yet.

All facilities are provided to improve teaching learning programs. Students also can use it freely under the supervision of class teachers. Some places in our schools have facilitated with computer , including in IT lab, staff room, library, school administration room, the principal’s room, curriculum space, and guidance counseling room, as well as in several classes. 2 telephones network in the administration and the principal's office. And digital video camera can be used by all subjects, stored at the facility department. While the tape recorder kept by the head of each subject. Digitalizers and scanners are stored in the curriculum department. 5 see you - see me cameras kept in Connecting Class Room space.

The facility not only got from the government funds but also from donations – parents or graduated students, or the gift of the international championship. Today's technology became the most important thing. It is the Internet network, because it easier to locate material and find a way out in solving a problem, can publish and determine their effect in a short time.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Being the ambassador is not easy. Should have a good social life and high concern on it. Not only is jaunty but also must be able to sync between science and real-world needs. Love of knowledge, know how to implement it and able to develop into something new is also useful for the community. As an ambassador should be able to change a problem into an opportunity. Recognizing that the problem is not something to be avoided but must be resolved, so that a profit is not only felt by himself but also by others around them, even around the world. By using internet anything can be done or we can create it. We can expose in the virtual world of what is, has done and we will do.

By using internet anything can be done or we can create it. We can expose in the virtual world of what is, has done and we will do.

In the first run of this project they are doing the project at school environment, then applied to a group of community samples, from which we then continue to approach and publish it to a wide publics. There are several responses from people who already known the activities carried out by our students, so in the end not only the parents who participated and supported this conservation programs but also the people who felt the impact of the activities that we recommend. Some parents are ready to publish the students’ activities, some people also feel the addition of daily income. Got new skills. And they have got high awareness of preserving the environment.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We believe that no matter how small we are doing will bring the changes. Therefore, we will always try to create something new which will bring a good changes, even though severe at first.

We exposed our activities through a few blogs, such as : kids blog, Recess, Bloggers and the latest is Weebly. We promote all of our blog content through several seminars both within and outside the country. Hopefully all of our activities will be known by many people and information will be beneficial for them. Besides, our school is one of favorite Junior High School in our town so we often have visitors from local and abroad, so that they can directly see our teaching learning process. There are many people who visit our blog and there are many invitations to participate in National and International competition, also cyber competition. The web presents all of the activities that we have done in the project, including our direct observation to car free day and the recycling production houses. Our web site has really helped us in finding new ideas, how to make the better world. Peopleare interested in our project to support and give suggestions. Therefore we are very grateful to the our school, the parents committee and our colleagues who have provided the links to discover something new.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

There are two Japanese who helped in doing this project : Kenji-san, Kinuko-san. They are the expert as environmentalist. They really know how to manage the environment. They gave us the suggestions how to adapt the program that they have done in their country regarding to manage the environmental problem (especially how to manage the garbage). They gave us tips to change waste into different and useful thing. Some other friends come from Tunza Conference. We still keep in touch, and exchange many information also links about some Environmental projects. Mahdu Verma is one of our colleagues from Singapore. Last Year we visited her Students Expo which called SoCh in Action in Singapore, and this year we’ll be participate in her Expo in our country and also in her country on November 2012.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Students' response is very surprised. They enjoyed to get involved in the project because they can see the value of learning which is enhancing their awaraness on environment.
