Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tatung Group owns many land and setups many stores in Taipei. It provides multiple products. The headquarters of Tatung Group is also in Taiwan. Tatung Group provides services for people in Taipei for generations. Taipei was where it started, the regions it mostly feedbacks to is also the Tatung District therefore we define Taipei as the local community. One of the most symbolic Taiwanese products is Tatung electric pot so that we focus on the relationship between Tatung electric pot and Taiwan then further introduce the structure, product, mascot, contributions, and influences of Tatung Group in expect to stand out the importance of Tatung Group in Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Tatung Group has rooted in Taiwan for almost a century since 1918. From the Xie-zhi Business at the very beginning to interdisciplinary investments in new energies and technologies, Tatung Group is now involved in various industries. In addition, Tatung electric pot has also become a symbol of Taiwan that everyone in Taiwan identifies with and has certain memory of it. When speaking of the status of Tatung, it is necessary for us to further probe into its existence which will bring a profound experience for us.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We have heavy academic and extracurricular activities. We found the 56 hours we set was difficult to be filled. Hence, activities such as cheerleading and musicals consume lots of energy of us. Therefore we have to conquer the tiredness and work effectively in the shortest time or we would delay our progress. As for the questionnaire administration, it is an age with technology well developed, the human contact is therefore decreasing and people are drifting apart. It was difficult for us to deliver the questionnaire in this detached society. Yet, still it was a precious experience for us. We learnt that the first impression was very important and it was the greatest difficulty we overcame.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

What we've find naturely may not always so certain. This time , we dug into the pass, present, and furture of Tatung Company, which has played an important role in Taiwan's histroy. It made us started a new way to see things, a new way to do things. This also offered us a chance to , indeed, make a website, which is a brand new experience. We used Flash to construct the whole website. It's a beginning of the exchange between schools and society, too. We've done some interviews and research. It was different from just getting knowledge from teachers in school, which we had before. It started a new vision for everything.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

As the idiom goes, “learn to meet practical need” is to apply what we learn from textbook in daily life. This project successfully integrated into the teaching spirit of school and allowed us to further experience the meaning of this phrase. (1) Learn from the experience and practice during learning The school always demands us to achieve “learn from the experience and practice during learning.” This project allowed us to deeply examine a local enterprise in Taiwan – Tatung Group. We not only collected data from internet but also interviewed the faculty of Tatung Group in person. What we learnt from textbooks is only basic knowledge and there are so many details we never pay attention to in the surrounding. Take Tatung Group as the example, we used to only think of electric pot when speaking of Tatung Group. However, after conducting further research, we found it is almost everywhere and the stereotype of it being old-time was then broken. (2) Dare to innovate while maintaining the tradition Tatung Group symbolizes a shared memory of people in Taiwan while leading the trend of fashion to maintain its position in the industry. Dare to innovate while maintaining the tradition – it is also what the school wants to remind us. To connect to the world while keep our culture in mind is what we high school students should do. (3) The importance of teamwork While conducting the project, we clearly experienced the significance of teamwork. A great project like this can’t be done by only one person. All the members have to make some sacrifice on their time and leisure activities to make discussions and integrations so that we were able to complete this meaningful project in this fast-paced life.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. Internet could be the most useful medium throughout our project. We searched the information of volunteers from all communities. We exchanged information and our point of views on our blogs. 2.Campus Internet: the internet speed is 30MB and there are wire and wireless internet at school. All the teaching rooms are equipped with computers o that we can easily make discussions, search for information, and print out the documents. Home internet: each member has computer at home and the study can be conducted through internet. 3. We used digital sound recorders and digital cameras to record our interviews. 4. We used printers to print out our questionnaires and our interview outlines. 5. We used the following software: Windows 7, Flash CS4, Digital Pen, Office 2010, Internet Explorer 8, Dreamwear4,FileZilla,X-mind,ImageResizer,and so on.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

To introduce Tatung Group more detailed, we adopted many different channels to get close to this corporation and to know it better. (1) Questionnaire: At the beginning, we designed a simple questionnaire in order to understand the opinions from people at different ages for the products of Tatung Group. We administrated the questionnaires in Tatung 3C Product Center after school and gathered statistics. (2) Message Board: We found a collector of Tatung Mascot through internet and made contact with him by leaving message on the message board of his blog. We then arranged the interview with him. (3) 2011 Taipei Design Expo The coming of 2011 Taipei Design Expo is another great opportunity for us. The historical Tatung Group would surely participate in this event. We attended the Design Expo and collected information. Surprisingly, we reached their RP department on the event and asked the agent to arrange a visit of Tatung headquarters. (4) Visiting Tatung headquarters After scheduling a proper time, we then visited the Tatung headquarters in Zhongshan District, Taipei. They especially arranged professional guide to accompany us and make introductions. We also proposed several questions prepared in advance. (5)Students from Taiwan In order to understand the feelings and memories of Taiwanese students abroad on Tatung electric pot, we interviewed several students who studied in foreign countries for years and asked them to share their stories with Tatung electric pots.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After the research of our designated topic, we really absorbed some new knowledge. And we also got to know Tatung Company more well. Now we learn that we're still not really familiar with it and most of the Taiwanese got the same image as we did. We believe that through our website, there'll be more people get to know Tatung Company clearer. To know that it is not only a traditional property, but also a company that cross many territories in our life.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To introduce Tatung Group more detailed, we adopted many different channels to get close to this corporation and to know it better. (1) Questionnaire: At the beginning, we designed a simple questionnaire in order to understand the opinions from people at different ages for the products of Tatung Group. We administrated the questionnaires in Tatung 3C Product Center after school and gathered statistics. (2) Message Board: We found a collector of Tatung Mascot through internet and made contact with him by leaving message on the message board of his blog. We then arranged the interview with him. (5)Students from Taiwan In order to understand the feelings and memories of Taiwanese students abroad on Tatung electric pot, we interviewed several students who studied in foreign countries for years and asked them to share their stories with Tatung electric pots.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We spent lots of time discussing the content, direction, and topic so that we wouldn’t get deviant when search for the information. We also learnt a lot from the interviews, with the guiding of our advisor, we found it was crucial to be well-prepared and the questions asked during the interview also required certain skills. What impressed us the most was the administration of questionnaires and how to get the customers of Tatung answer our questionnaire. We had to introduce ourselves and our purpose in the shortest time which was quite a challenge. Finally, in our webpage, there are many parts were made with Flash. Therefore we were getting more familiar with this software that we were able to use it to produce the effect we wanted. There were many discussions and sometimes conflictions occurred while conducting this project, I believe all these experiences allowed us how to get along with people better and taught us the spirit of teamwork.
