Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Songhua Community, Shou’an Town, Pujiang County, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. You can take a bus at Chengdu New South Gate Bus Station, via highway of Cheng (du) - Ya (An) for about 40 minutes, and get off at Shou’an exit stop, turn to the west and go along for about 5 km, then you can find our school. Our school locates between the big and small Wumian Hill, close to the Linxi River, about 20 km to Pujiang County. The fast track between Chengdu and Pujiang under construction is only 1 km away from our school. When the project is completed, it will become more convenient your coming to our school.

2. Summary of Our Project

Pujiang, as a national ecological demonstration zone, enjoys the reputation of 'green Pujiang, natural oxygen bar'. Pujiang’s people are hard-working and kind. The elders in Pujiang are loving and caring, who care about the next generation.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Our school began to use the education group private network this year. Since it is just a beginning, the supporting facilities are still uncompleted. There are always too many classes using the school computer rooms, thus it is difficult to get one. The West Side Story and website production has been arranged in the school administrative office. There are three computers in the office, used for the teachers to find information and print the files most often, and sometimes students don’t have the access and they have to go to other places for writing, including teachers’ home and other school leaders’ offices.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First: the tight schedule. The beginning time for participating this activity is a little late this year, but the students in boarding school have to get up at 6:50 everyday morning, have breakfast at 7:30 and do the morning reading time at 8:30 am, and the end time for the night classes is 9:00 pm. Ms. Liu is the class teacher and also responsible for school administrative office work. Students use the time after breakfast and before the morning reading, free time for PE class, after lunch and after dinner. We try to make good use of our time to do something, and sometimes on weekends when it is accessible we can do some at school. Little by little, the work needed to be done is accumulated. Second: Although I have accessed to some information in the school CNG committee (Working Committee Caring for the Next Generation) long before, it is still really difficult to contact with the elderly extensively. To understand the true lives of the elderly, especially their thoughts, we must go into them. But the nearest community university for the senior and the working group caring for the next generation in the community don’t open all year daily. After all, it is rural. The elderly have their own home and families, and they can be together only three or four days in a month. In order to get the first-hand information, we asked the school CNG committee for help. The committee made a contact with the community university for the senior and the working group in the community, thus our interview activities was carried out successfully. Huang Wanming, deputy director of the school CNG committee, and Mr. Lv, member of the school CNG committee and the director of the school moral education department, provided us with great help.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The elderly is not a burden. The elderly are not pessimistic. They have the fun of their own. The elderly are all caring for the next generation and they all wish that the younger generation can grow up healthily. Old people are enjoying lives by their own way, continuing to glow at their later years and make contributions for the community. Sunset is magnificent, even dusk.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The purposes for organizing students to participate in this activity are: 1. To cultivate the students’ team spirit; 2. To exercise and develop their ability of life observation and information extraction; 3. To broaden their horizons; 4. To help students to go into the elderly and understand their spiritual world; 5. To promote the students to learn and acquire more knowledge.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used telephone, digital camera,U disk and computer to complete our project this year. Computers and software belong to the school; digital cameras are part of the school and part of the individuals; U disk is private; and the network is part of the school and part of families.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through this activity, people in the community have got a further understanding of our school and learned about the Town and Talent. Through our visit, they know that not only they are caring to help the next generation, but also thousands of people are caring for them.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

By this research, we have learned to share and cooperate with others, and we know how to use the language to help the interviewees answer our questions very well, how to talk with others and how to organize the material. Our websites 'Popped Rice in Pujiang', 'Tea in Pujiang' and 'Kiwi in Pujiang' have been visited by many people, such as our school teachers, students and our interviewees. When they knew that our websites had won prizes in the international network Fair during the past few years, they gave us a high praise. We are proud since we have established a good image for our school. Our websites have come into the internet, and many people will see them. Through our website, more and more people outside will know Pujiang well, and sure, they will love Pujiang, since here is the 'natural oxygen bar', and people in Pujiang are industrious and simple. Moreover, the elderly here are relaxing and loving.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The school CNG committee and Songhua Community University for the Senior gave us the greatest help, providing us the opportunity to make close contact with the elderly.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

By our visit, we found that though people in cities and the elderly in cities have their own lifestyle and their pleasure, people in rural, particularly the elderly in rural areas, although they are not as wealthy as people in the city, their spirit is not simple, and they are not simply retired, they have their own pleasure and their hearts are filled with the next generation.
