Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Sanxia is a place nestling under mountains and near rivers. It is not only one of the oldest streets in the northern Taiwan, but also one of few traditional streets with the integrity of historical value. In the past, the old street used to be the most bustling street at the Sanxia. The arcade of the old street is shaped with continuous arch. Such a 3-arch row floor is rich in the style of Baroque. The signs of stores are mostly engraved with the hometown names, store names and family names quite different from modern store signs. However, with time going by, the prosperous glory of the old street has faded away. Additionally, because it is unavailable for alternations, the badly weathered buildings have become dangerous houses. Numerous domestic residents move out gradually and the old street is dying as well. In 2004, with 300 million of governmental grant, the overall alternations on the buildings and streets were conducted. More especially, the old street was totally renovated by means of sandwich construction to keep the unique building styles and features of the old street.

There have been numerous people probably forgetting the traditional art of “indigo dye”. However, the beauty of “indigo dye” deeply attracts us - the students majoring in multiple media design. Indigo dye is not only the traditional skill native to Sanxia, but also symbolizes its domestically cultural aesthetics. To make this art pervade eternally and globally is exactly our mission as the young generation. This theme is titled “Silent Visual Feast - Sanxia Indigo Dye”We actually visit the indigo dye workshop and make our own workshop of indigo dye. Through this research, we sincerely hope our academic theories of aesthetics can allow more people to enjoy the beauty of the indigo dye art. In this theme, we establish a website to introduce the art of indigo dye art at Sanxia. Also, through the creativity of everyone, we create some planar designs dedicated to the indigo dye workshop. Hopefully, people can be attracted by the unique beauty of indigo dye art to fulfill the purpose of culture and art heritage. The development and evolution of the indigo dye workshop at Sanxia, along with its insistence and innovation to the indigo dye art, can substantially demonstrate the Taiwan spirit. 4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Technology: Although we had some understanding about using software, there were still numerous problems happening to the styling tools for layout. We were inexperienced in web authoring and it was probably unavailable to make the design effect best exerted. We oftentimes spent our leisure time after school or on holidays for theme web authoring. Whenever there was any problem happening, we referred to teachers or senior class mates.

Time: With limited course hours and the troublesome chores of every participant, the time for interview and discussion is naturally much shorter. Every participant spent the best effort to complete this research at home or at school by making most of the leisure time after school and on holidays.

Collaboration: Every participant had his or her own concepts and ideas. Contrarily, in the aspect of design, everyone also showed different aesthetic identities. Sometimes, there were oral disputes happening to delay the theme proceeding. The team chief assigned tasks in accordance with the proceeding schedules with opinions and inspiration exchanged to avoid unnecessary disputes.

Information: From the beginning discussion to determine the theme subject, till now, everything seems going smoothly. However, it takes time and effort. Actually, there was little information available with difficulties to gather relevant information. When interview was conducted, available webpage information was adopted together with other Internet materials to complete the tasks after labor division .

Interview: Due to being inexperienced in interview, we also faced a big trouble in responding capabilities. To make the interview proceeding smoothly, we made well-organized preparation previously and interviewed to question the respondents one by one.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our theme report is not only the effort widely gathering documentary materials, but also the on-site visit to the indigo dye workshop at Sanxia. Through theme research, we find there are some people devoting to art heritage silently. However, the rise and decline of these traditional trades also profoundly affect the traditional culture and art heritage among us and this exactly the point worthy of our in-depth exploration. In the process of theme research, we deeply sense the aesthetic and culture charm of the indigo dye workshop at Sanxia. We should spare no effort to protect this traditional art with the decline avoided. In this theme research, we are well consolidated with excellent labor division to reach a single goal. This research gives us the precious experience.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Internet Authoring and Application: We learn the webpage authoring of our thematic research and also use Internet to share more people with our webpage contents through webpages.

Teamwork and labor division : We learn the way of labor division through teamwork and know the way how to make most of everyone’s talent. Despite everyone’s different ideas about the theme, the way for consolidated teamwork is the most invaluable part actually.

Capabilities of Data Integration: Gather and compile data to form the website mainframe.

Appreciation and Emphasis on Traditional Art: Traditional art cannot only allow us for appreciation, but also for emphasis with more prosperous development available. This exactly our development and we should pay close attention to its development. For any given kind of traditional art, we should pose the attitude with sincere appreciation and emphasis.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

As Rodin said, life never lacked beauty, but lacked finds. In the rapidly changing modern society, we always spend too much time to chase after fashionable trends, but forget the beauty of traditional art. Our values are short-sighted to art evaluation. Actually, real art never spends much and takes considerable effort, but needs mindful feelings. We can easily find there are numerous beautiful things around us. There have been numerous traditional trades forgotten by people. Through this thematic research and interview, we start to profoundly find beauty should be sensed by heart to appreciate the beauty of color and objects. Additionally, we are deeply moved by the heritage and innovation made by the indigo dye workshop at Sanxia. In view of the skill and the insistence on quality devoted by the indigo dye workshop at Sanxia, it spares no effort on aesthetical innovation. Without violating the primary spirit of traditional art, it is expected to fulfill the public demand. It means traditional art is not always something aged. Appropriate innovation and change can make us sense the beauty of art deeper.
