Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school, Jing Yi elementary school is located in Nei-Men, which is a country sides place in Kaohsiung city,Taiwan. Nei Men was called “Luo Han Men” or “Luo Han Wun” but the locals called it “Nei Wun”. It means literati get together here. There is one proverb says, “Jiou Wan Shih Ba Cian, Ba Siou San Gong Sheng”, describes there are so many literati and many of them get chosen during the government test. Also, Cuei Wun Academy locates in Nei Men Township and it is just an evidence to prove Nei Men is a cultural place.

2. Summary of Our Project

There are many legends circulates in Nei-Men, one of the most popular legends is ‘Ya Mu Wang’, the story of ‘Zhu I-Gei’. In our subject, we walk through the temples of ‘Ya Mu Wang’ in Nei-Men, visit the historian and literary authors in order to find out the story and the source of ‘Ya Mu Wang’. We also try to understand the history and the monuments with student. Let students join in to community by community investigating. Let them understand the history background from knowing the legends.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Before we joined this project, we had read many books and browsed many websites, but because of our age and limited knowledge, we still needed more detail although we had checked and checked the database on the internet. Therefore, we asked our teachers and also interviewed a few great chefs in Nei Men Township for getting better and clearer ideas.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We hope to let teachers and students have a wider view of this world by doing this project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

As a part of the community, we should put more efforts on advertising my hometown and inspiring habitant’s willing to learn, organize and improve the ability of adaptation. But what we had tought at school couldn’t really find out if students need help or run into troubles. In a high tech age now, Internet can reach everywhere and through this research project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Doing the project, we contacted the chefs through the phone and well expressed the interests and cares we had in this project to give some contribute for our hometown. After a few calls, we decided the meeting detail and visited the person with expectancy to know more about the Ya Mu Wang and the legend of Zhu I Gei and hope people can learn more about the culture via our project on the website. We did get a bunch of information and build a good relationship with the community although the procedure we went through wasn’t that easy.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During this project, we have met many profession of the local area. Furthermore, we have found the local citizens are very respected to Zhu I-Gei and thought he is a real hero in that time during the interview with those professions. Therefore we would like to let more and more people to know the stories of Zhu I-Gei though the internet and hope them will also be respected to him.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To have a better idea of the project, we were zealous for contacting each great chef by phone and also the volunteer mothers put a lot of work on it but because of the busy schedule, most of the interviewees couldn’t promise. Here we want to thank each one who had helped us and therefore, we can’t treat it lightly.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the project, we realized that there are too many things in life ignored by us and so there are many things needed to be explored and experienced. Also, we needed to remind each other to focus and cooperate to complete the mission. We were surprised to know that the story of legand went through the difficulty of limited areas, and still worked hard and lived hard. We also found out that there are too much knowledge needed to be explored and understood and I believe that all of us do have unlimited potentials.
