Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in Chungcheng District, Taipei Bo-ai District, close to the presidential palace and official residence. It is the only elementary school of the ancient Taipei City, and is also a university affiliated experimental elementary school responsible for the mission of nurturing and educating the national seedlings. Our community environment characteristics are: (1) Special geographical environment: Located in the political, economic, cultural and educational hub. Convenient traffic, human and cultural characteristics, characteristic streets surrounding the area, the special environment became the source of teacher’s teaching materials which is conducive to the development of specialized courses. (2) Abundant community resources: School education is incorporated into a community rich in resources and planned for special courses. Not only in order to be active, but closely linked to the community, embracing the community, but also develops the community and is the cultural inheritor.

2. Summary of Our Project

We hope that through the story of several distinguished women, we can provide a break for students to only interpret the world and history of Taiwan from only the male point of view, and to understand the difference between the two sexes from the perspective of development of women's lives. This research project is mainly to learn the unique culture of the genders, in order to foster the concept of gender equality and establish the spirit of caring for life. Through collecting literary contribution we explore the role played by women in different times, recognize the different gender roles, and summarized the reasons for the success of these outstanding women. We then interview with today's outstanding female in different fields and the reason and successful process of how they broke through gender restrictions. During the course we came to understand career planning can breakthrough limitations.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The opportunity to be able to interview successful and outstanding women is very rare, and the interview opportunity is even more unpredictable. However, through constant correspondence and phone contacts, we did it! Participating in this event allowed us to really understand the different roles of women in different times, and better understand their life experiences and recognize the different gender roles. More importantly, we got to know the successful experience and reasons of how women successfully broke through gender limitations, and learned how our own career planning can breakthrough gender restrictions.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In the process we interviewed Lucia, Liu Severinghaus, Chi Cheng, and Wen-ya Kuei. We learned a lot in the process of the interview. We found that they are active in different fields, but they still have much in common. That is, their biggest success factor is interest, and their careers were chosen according to their own interests. They did not care if their gender was limited, and overcame all difficulties by relying on an enthusiastic and serious attitude. They used optimism and courage to face everything. We feel that all women choosing a career should have this attitude.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our case studies can enhance students' ten basic abilities in the Grace 1-9 Curriculums. 1.Understanding and development of potential: In the process of implementing the writing and website production, allow the children to understand their own expertise and express their potential through interaction and cooperation between the teams. Develop an appreciation for others and their own performance. 2.Expressing, communication, and sharing; respect, care, and teamwork: In the research project, the team members communicate each other's thoughts at all times, sharing different points of view, and divide up team work according to each person's expertise. This exhibits a cooperative spirit in completing this research project. 3.Planning Organization and implementation: Through the web-based idea, prepared interview outline and actual interviews. Develop the children’s planning and organizational skills, and using actual street interview to raise the children’s program implementation capacity. 4. Use of technology and information: Using internet to search for outstanding women related information. Use various computer softwares to edit images, upload data, and create web pages. 5.Take the initiative to explore and research; Independent thinking and problem-solving: During the web site production process of this research project, we encourage the children to discover answers to research problems in daily life. Reflect on their own performance in each activity and raise their own problem solving abilities.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

1. The most valuable tools The most valuable information platform for us is the “moodle digital platform' and 'group learning network.” Using these network platforms in school, we can upload our work and interview information. We can also discuss our own thoughts in this place and share all kinds of information. With digital learning platforms, even if occasionally we could not attend classroom discussions, we can keep up with everyone's progress.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

During this research project, we used the following research methods: 1.Literary contribution exploration method Regarding research, we read related books and searched for relevant literature online.

2.Interview of outstanding women (1)data. Through open-ended questions we conducted face to face communication with interview subjects to understand their life experience, the meaning and value give to events, view problems through the perspective of the interview subject, and express through the interview subject’s expressions. (2)Using continuous correspondence and telephone contact to set an interview time, we successfully interviewed three outstanding women face to face, sports personality Chi Cheng, ecological experts Lucia Liu Severinghaus, as well as literary master Wen,-ya Kuei.

(3)The Cyberfair project not only gave me the opportunity to meet with a number of well-known outstanding women, but also let me understand that to become a great woman is not easy and comes with more pressure and hard work. I believe after this experience, everyone has grown a lot, and it is a really meaningful activity.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

From formulating the topic, to work allocation discussion, to collect information, and writing reports, we completed each mission to the best of our ability. There were inevitably some difficulties and bottlenecks during the process, but good thing we have the assistance of classmates and teacher, so each person can continue to complete their own part. In the course of the research project, each person’s writing strength also increased little by little. Not only did we developed better data collecting, compile reports and writing skills, we also learned interview skills and experience a lot of interesting things, letting everyone learn more about outstanding women. We got a lot out of this. I felt that participating in Cyberfair project is very interesting, though very hard. But we can challenge new things every time and feel very curious. We learned many things and we can’t learn from books and experience things that most people cannot experience. We felt really lucky we were able to learn so many interesting things and fun knowledge. Participating in Cyberfair project was really great! It served so many purposes! Just as Lucia Liu Severinghaus said, as long as you are interested in, or like it, even if is very hard or very difficult, you still will not give up. With this research project we make it easier for more people to understand: The reasons and successful experiences of outstanding women today who broke gender limitation in different fields, and that each person can understand from it they can break the gender limitation through career planning.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

These three outstanding women all emit an air of confidence, making people feel that they should use a more cautious mood to converse with them. They were all modest in the face of their success, which is an attitude worthy of admiration. We also discovered from stories of women’s struggle that the beauty of women’s strength and unyielding pursuit of a dream requires courage. Once you start on something, you must adhere to the end and do not give up. Only then will you have the chance to succeed.
