Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Dan Geer, namely, Huangyuan County in Qinghai province, which has a meaning of “white conch”, is located in the north of the Yellow River, coast western of the ocean, the source of Huangshui, and 40 kilometers away from Xining (Capital city of Qinghai). It is the place where Loess plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet plateau jointed together, farming culture and the grassland culture intersected ,ancient Road in Tang Dynasty and south silk road passed through , many peoples gathered, it is well-known as the “ the throat of Qinghai and Tibet”, “ Tea and horse Commercial City”, “Small Beijing”. The ancient city built in Ming dynasty ( Hongwu Period),with a history of 600 years, is an important economic and cultural hub and holding an important military position in western China.

2. Summary of Our Project

Our project research theme concerns the customs of ancient Dan Geer city, we photography, interview, collect information, sort and research its traditional culture such as historical culture, scenic spots culture, humanities culture, folk culture etc, during which we get strong support from people in Huangyuan county Propaganda Department, Tourism Bureau, Regional Management staffs and scenic spots commentators, therefore, we get a lot of materials. We use our own website to propaganda the local conditions and folk customs of Dan Geer,let people know more about our beautiful hometown, at the same time, this activity cultivates friendly mutual cooperation spirit between teachers and students. We stick to the theme of the visit: “Watch and Feel”, we hope that through this contest, we share the historical and natural beauty of Dan Geer, our success, experience and happiness with friends from all over the world.

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

(1)Our school is located in the countryside, the children all come from mountainous area, and don't have a computer and Internet at access at home, there was no students who have access to Internet at home. (2)Because the school is still in built, there is only one computer classroom, and 40 computers’ access to Internet is not stable, only about ten computers in teachers’ office have access to network. (3) Surfing internet at school is expensive, where applies the dormitory LAN agent mode. (4) Students can have acess to the Internet for two years, but the Internet is not stable.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

In collecting material and making web pages, we meet many difficulties. This project is to research folk culture of Dan Geer, the materials collection is relatively easy, but because of the wide design range, it's hard to be comprehensive in collecting materials. In order to collect more information, we visit and take photos in attractions at our own, in advance, we contact the people in Propaganda Department and workers in the attractions, seeking their help to give us free charge to visit attractions, and it this does not work, we pay the tickets ourselves. After getting consent and support from school leaders, and then approval of class advisor, we can go out, while only in afternoon, there is time for us to go out. Sometimes, because we classify material in computer room at soon, we miss noon self-study time, at that time, some of the teachers do not understand our behavior, but we will prove to teachers with excellent study performance that we didn't drop courses. In collecting, sorting and making web pages, the school network often fails in working; so we have go to the teacher's office to transmit the material to the Internet. In addition, we should not only make web pages carefully, but also improve our study. After all, we are in eight-grade, and it is an important year for us, learning task is aggravating, secondly, our guiding teachers are very busy with their work, they do not only have many teaching tasks of many classes, but also have to guide us to make web pages, they really work very hard, and they also love to finish web pages together with us.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

In this activity, we seek folk customs and cultural inheritance of Dan Geer, which helps us understanding the fact that precious memory of ancient civilization of one thousand years of winds and rain vicissitudes of life is left in this ancient land, where there is accumulated rich and unique local culture, manifesting amazing intersection of the farming culture and the grassland culture. Thank again for teachers and school leaders’ support to us. Abundant activities strengthen our social practice ability. In the project activities, we understand that: folk culture attaches with people’s life, their emotions and beliefs, is the blood and soul of a land, is also the important embodiment of national spirit and of national character. This project strengthens our love towards our hometown, and also plays a positive role in exploring, protecting and inheriting rich folk culture resources of Dan Geer, and developing folk cultural tourism.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Learning class courses in the classroom is our priority, and this project research activities doesn’t influence our normal study, we just try to find time and opportunities to complete the web page designing, sometimes we make use of holidays, weekend time to do interviews, to take pictures, and we want to thank our guiding teacher for their hard-working, and also appreciate all concerns and support from all level of leaders.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In this practice activities, we not only depend on own strength to complete web pages, which is also the crystallization of the collective power of the whole team with external care and support from enthusiastic people. Through this research project, we want to show the outside world original unique ecological folk culture here, and promote the sustainable development of cultural tourism industry, people will get the information that this place is the joint area of loess plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet plateau where farming culture and grassland nomadic culture exist interactively, here is the earliest plateau of the ancient tea-horse path, where Chinese and western trade communicated each other and a part of the civilized silk south road with glorious history and historic anecdotes.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We participate in cyber-fair project research study, with deeper understanding that the ancient Dan Geer city is brilliant, and today, it is still full of charming, in our activities, a lot of people help us, providing us with resources, playing as propaganda spokesmen, we give special thanks to scenic spot commentators for their zeal and initiative in helping us. At the same time, this study also triggers us our love towards our hometown.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Huangyuan Propaganda Department provides us with many precious materials, especially some historical documents, and Huangyuan Tourism Administration sends attraction commentator who buys attractions tickets for us, street services worker gives us guidance with enthusiasm, we sincerely appreciate their concerns and support to us.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process of finishing this cyber-fair project research, we learned how to use computers, to make a web pages, and also realized that Dan Geer ancient city is a cultural city, where with each nation 's fusion, all kinds of culture grow and develop here, which forming its special regional culture. It is very rare in Qianghai-Tibet area that there is ancient and brilliant culture information in a piece of watts, a brick, a door, a closed window, or yard street. We have an obligation to protect and promote the Dan Geer ancient city, watching through time tunnel, there are Kunlun Mythology, the holy myths, and the Tang ancient avenues and silk anecdotes, tea and horse commerce city, row lamp art..., and from past to present, let us feel the remote ancient civilization and splendid culture of Dan Geer in Huangyuan......
