Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Haishiwan is the location of People’s Government of Honggu District. It connects the Gansu Province and Qinghai Province. Cross stitch, as a work of art, is very popular among the people, and it can be found in nearly every household here.

2. Summary of Our Project

Cross stitch,based on special stitch line and cross plaid according to special coordinate template,can be made by anybody with the same effect,in the way of cross-lap joint.Cross stitch is national and age-old.In China,home-made embroideries are all along common in many minority people's daily life.Due to cultural regionalism,the development of cross stitch in all countries,as time goes by,has formed different styles.The traits of the cross stitch,including the stitch line,color,material,and the pattern,are all of great originality.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Webpage making experience lack.Not skilled in web authoring software,we finally decided to utilize the CISS-based template coming out of Town and Talent Technologies. 2.Time shortage.Our four members are all sophomore students.In face of all the subjects,they are not available for deeper investigation,and they are merely available during the big break activity on Wed afternoon to have photograph taken and to have interviews before record keeping. 3.One-sided interview scope.As it is not convenient to cover and to take pictures of the private cross stitch,we have to go to the cross-stitch shop. 4.Due to our poor English,we have to ask the masters in the Town and Talent Technologies for help,for the entry,according to the organizing committee,should be in English.So we here thank them again.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We have deep feelings when looking back.We finally got the information gathering done after one-month effort.In order to let more people love cross stitch,we noted down the concrete cross stitch-making process after referring to related information on the Internet?real cross stitch and explination from the shop owner.The webpage,not a good look,however,as it was made by ourselves,we are gratified.What to our relief most is not the accomplished webpage but the whole process in which we have learnt much beyond books;have learnt much about the development and manufacturing process of cross stitch;have felt cross stitch master Yang's perfection and clinging pursuance of cross stitch.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through do-it-ourselves investigation of the cross stitch in surrounding civilian life,we had access to education. The activity this time met the needs of our school's courses: the new curriculum reform requires students' book learning and social activities participating. And the social class, worth four credits,has been carried out already. During the investigation visits and webpage-making process,we encouraged and communicated withe eatch other and graspe the ABC,step by step,which not only has enhanced the friendship between us,but also has strengthened the team spirit and made us understand our duty that we should conscientiously study the scientific and cultural knowledge and skills.The investigation of social practice has developed our ability to participate in social practice which has made us feel the importance of scientific and cultural knowledge.And this can promte our better learning of all subjects.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used telephone?computer?DC?related books and some software like photoshop,etc.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the activity we played a role as the 'Folk Art and Culture Ambassador' for our visited events caught the attention of our schoolmates?relatives and friends.The succession and perfection of cross stitch has played a positive role.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our earnest interview moved the owner of the cross stitch shop; influenced the cross stitch lovers; and tried to let part of the hobo get rich road by making and selling the cross stitch. The cross stitch information we gathered got its culture belonging to part of the cross stitch professional completed, which let them maintain hopeful cross stitch. We also hope that our website can help advertise the cross stitch shop.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The software and DC used were respectively provided by our school and our teachers who were also in charge of the contact with the shop owner and cross stitch master. And we also got support from our parents. The interviewees deeply knew that our website would help advertise their works, so their warm welcome is merited.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

At the beginning when our teachers recommended us the webpage-making activity, we had little faith in the project for the short of hands and DC and it might become our studying burden. However, we suddenly had the confidence when our teachers showed us their students' entries last year, and we believed we would do better than them. Under our teachers' guidance, our plan emerged,and then,our interests became stronger for our works and obscure names would appear on the Internet. The activity this time not only tempered our interpersonal skill but also brought us something that can never be acquired in school. During the whole process, including the interview, online information search, and webpage making, we felt the importance of team work. We knew a task can never be completed individually. As the three themes of the contemporary world, namely peace, development, and cooperation. We argued when our teachers divided the work, but we learnt to communicate and understand each other with our teachers' coordination. We felt happy to participate in the webpage-making contest, and this is a rare opportunity.
