Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in the Taipei Basin, Taipei is not only the most populous city in Taiwan, but also the hub of the commerce, politics, culture and media. Taipei is saddled with the adequate facility, such as expressway, Mass Rapid Transit System, and Bus way. The renewal of the city is continuously in process. All the modernization of Taipei City is speeding beyond our expectation and this is the city in which we live! However, with the change of the environment and the development of urbanization, Taipei, a city that has ample rainfall, faces a severe problem of water shortage. According to the research published by the United Nations, Taiwan list in the 18th country that will face the severe shortage of water resource. And this really worries us. In 1970, the global crisis of resource leads the trend of green building. The environmental awareness arouses and emphasizes on the concept that human being co-exist with environment peacefully. Taipei ,as the capital of Taiwan, takes great efforts on project of the green building. For instance, the library of Beitou, green building of Tzi-Chi and Taipei Floral Expo Plaza, Xinsheng Park Area all earn a Diamon Award of Green building. This is a modern, technology and environment-friendly city where we live.

2. Summary of Our Project

The earth is sick. The weird change of the climate and allocation of water resources makes part of the region suffers from water shortage while other part of wails by floods. All these things leads the enhancement of the price of grains, fluctuation of the price of commodities. We can foresee the crisis of food and water shortage. How to reserve and make the best allocation of water is the most vital thing in our modern society. Taipei, the most modern city which is filled with the building in Taiwan, was lack of green building which has the function of preserving water and heat radiation in past. This poses threats to our environment because of severe global warming which threatens our ecosystem. Thus, through the modernization of the urban architecture, we can preserve the water resource and effectively apply it. Green building refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort. Thus, it is the best way to balance water resources and environment. We hope to arouse the environment awareness of the public through this study which centers on global warming, floods and ecosystem. In this way, we can pass the lasting good quality environment to our next generation.

The school’s computer facilitated with optical fiber and backup disk which contains 100mb capacity. The internet is also connected with optical fiber. Most of students uses the computer lab to do the project after school. Every students utilizes the ADSL, optical fiber and cable Modem to search the materials uploads the schedule and report. We also utilize the wi-fi in the library and discuss the drawback on holidays.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

a.Disagreement Though we team members are close, but there are disagreement between us all the time. We can’t integrate the opinions to make a win-win situation that leads the web site behind the schedule. We focus o his problem to fix it. We negotiate and after the discussion, we choose the win-win situation. During the research, our instructor indeed helps a lot!!! b.Data collection In this part, there are plenty of information. However, there so much information that makes us do not know how to find the key points to match the topic. All of his makes us loose our confidence. And our solution to the problem is work together to search the information and associate with the keywords and direction. c.Under pressure Facing the approaching of the important examination- Join College Entrance Examination, some of our classmates have to get the license, too. It is a great loading for us to attend the cyber fair. We have to keep up with the schedule during the holidays and weekends. Thus, we don’t haveenough time to rest that causes our distraction in class. There are the slogan on the wall which reminds us all the time. “ Only us know our own pain, only us can solve our own problems.” We can confronts the obstacle anytime. So, we have to fix it not astray when we face the problems.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through this project, we know a concept “ never waste resource at will” better. The government and the enterprise ‘s “water, eco ,and green building” let us know the issue of environment it not a individual’s duty, but everyone’s. We do hope that we can take this concept into practice.Take this action and unite people to care about our earth.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Since elementary school, we have been educated fro ten years. We recall and know that every subjects such as Chinese English Social Science and Science all extend to the preservation, life lasting and management. Especiallyin science and social science, the text in the books all want to let the students know that we have to work together to protect our earth. In this change of environment, we have to take advantage of our resource and cherish it, because all resource are limited.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In Internet Era, we can search through the internet when we face any problem. We fully utilize the convenience of the internet to consult the Netpal about the issue about Green building and water recycle. We also search the impact to eco system caysed by waste of resources. Through these methods, even we have hard time from the very beginning, but it goes quite well gradually. And we enjoy it. Because we know it is our “ambassadors” ‘s duty. Through this project, we let everyone know that Taiwan is making efforts on environment protection and co-exist with the Earth peacefully.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Study and project really wail us. But time passing by, we can find the balance between the two. Since we did the project, we have altered our attitude toward the nature and kept affect our classmates through the daily routine. We used to think it is a really boring thing to sort the garbage under school’s strict request. After doing the project, we realize that every waste has its value- just use your creativity. Besides, we didn’t know our nature better, and regard it as a boring stuff. What really strikes us is the human’s destruction to nature, all out of selfishness and apathy. We didn’t aware of that. Especially the waste of water resources leads us into a vast cataclysm. We have to do our duty. Saving the water resources is not a slogan!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks all the interviewees, including the Chief section of architecture and environment control in Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Hu-Hsiao Hsu who spends time with us to explain every details of our questions and the students, housewives and office workers who answers the questionnaire. Thanks for your support that makes our project!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Through this project and the website, we find that there are so many things that we often ignore to explore. We have to experience it. We know that there are the issues that need our attention and many people guard on their position to do their best to contribute to our society. We even know that we can achieve through the teamwork, professional allocation of work and time, and focus. There is no limit in our potential. Just work hard, and the problem will be solved. The issue of water resources will be huge. All because, without water, we can’t grow food. We can’t grow food, and we have no food. No brainer, we have no future. The war of water resources is starting, and the work of environmental protection can’t be postponed.
