Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our local community is a rural area located on the East End of Long Island in the town of Riverhead. We are surrounded by bays, the Long Island sound and the Ocean. We are very conscious of conservation and the role it has in maintaining clean environments. In our area we are very conscious of water and why we need to ensure that development does not increase. We have many different types of wildlife in our area and we have grown up knowing about endangered species and why they need to be preserved. During the summers our beaches are sometimes closed because of the endangered Piping Plovers and the need to preserve their nesting ground.

2. Summary of Our Project

Theodore Roosevelt was a President of the United States. He also lived on Long Island. Many of us have visited his home and the conservation area near it. We felt that he was a local leader who began the concept of conservation not only in our area but in his presidency throughout the whole country. We are proud of someone who began as a local leader and went on to affect the beginning of the National Parks and the Conservation Societies in our country. We have used this project to show some of his history and to help people understand how important his work still is today.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

WE addressed various content standards for NYS. They are as follows: ELA Standards Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.

As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas; discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply, and transmit information.

Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression. Students will read and listen to oral, written, and electronically produced texts and performances, relate texts and performances to their own lives, and develop an understanding of the diverse social, historical, and cultural dimensions the texts and performances represent. As speakers and writers, students will use oral and written language for self-expression and artistic creation.

Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

As listeners and readers, students will analyze experiences, ideas, information, and issues presented by others using a variety of established criteria. As speakers and writers, they will present, in oral and written language and from a variety of perspectives, their opinions and judgments on experiences, ideas, information and issues.

Standard 4: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction.

Students will use oral and written language for effective social communication with a wide variety of people. As readers and listeners, they will use the social communications of others to enrich their understanding of people and their views.

Mathematics, Science, and Technology Standard 1: Analysis, Inquiry, and Design Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering design, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions. Standard 2: Information Systems Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies. Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used laptops and PCs to complete this project. Online web 2.0 tools were also used.Digital cameras, books and online resources were researched and found by the students. Our students, although already familiar with the internet, had never created a web site before. This has helped them think more broadly about internet use and it has opened their eyes to the content they have found in it.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The cyber fair project will be published on our school web site. We are also participating in the ES BOCES Celebration of Technology in Education where we will be displaying our project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project will make people aware that they can also participate in conservation within their own community. We hope that people around the world will view our study of Theodore Roosevelts role in conservation they will be able to look around their community and find projects that they can be involved in. Other teachers in out building have viewed the web site. They are amazed at the work our students have done.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We had great help from Rafika Soaries from ES BOCES who helped us find a web server. We also had help from our school principal, SR.Linda Joseph who helped us use school resources to complete the project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We discovered how creative and motivated our students can be. They are amazed by the work they have done. Their understanding of this persons history and how it affects them is wonderful.
