Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Kaohsiung City has actively devoted in environmental capacity, especially in green transportation, energy conservation and carbon reduction. Comparing to other cities, Kaohsiung city owns the first metropolitan network based public rental bike scheme. Until now, the length of the bicycle lane is more than 190 km. The bicycle lane connects to tourist attractions, main commuting roads, MRT routes, and school districts in each community and it turns out to be a green transportation net. There are 50 public bicycle rental stations and 4500 bicycles. In the future, it is planned to expand 100 rental stations and this brings up the lively image in energy conservation and carbon reduction in Kaohsiung City.

2. Summary of Our Project

Giant trees are like the hair of Mother Earth. Petroleum is like the blood of Mother Earth. We have drawn out whatever we want from her for long. Now Mother Earth gets sick and we are the last generation who can change her fate. Slogans are everywhere but very few actions. Therefore, we seek to raise environmental awareness and actions in Kaohsiung City and start the petition of thousands of people. We would like to make February 12th as Kaohsiung LOHAS Day. We would like to send a green and positive image instead of the black one when reaching 2012.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:none

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Due to the reason that our group members consist of students from 7 elementary schools, we need to find the location for us to finish this research project. We also use personal computers to upload our research projects.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

First, insufficient computer literacy. As a group of 8 to12-year old kids, we do not have same level of computer literacy.

Second, limited discussion and planning time. It is a big challenge for us to meet up and discuss because our group members belong to seven different schools.

Third, the busy schedule of the city mayor. We would like to make an appointment with the mayor so we wrote emails to her mailbox and post on her blog. However, our response was that the mayor has such a tight schedule that she can not meet us. We have attempted to reach her in public events but could not tell her the plan of petition. Thanks to the consultant of the municipal government, Mr. Tsai, we can finally make an appointment with mayor in the VIP room and tell her our suggestions. The mayor showed her supports on our research topic and promised us to fulfill our wish: making February 12th as Kaohsiung LOHAS Day.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We laugh. We have fun. We enjoy learning. We love our land. We love our home. We love our earth!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.limited discussion and planning time. It is a big challenge for us to meet up and discuss because our group members belong to seven different schools. We could only make use of our weekends and holidays. It almost take our every weekend during the project.

2.insufficient computer literacy. As a group of 8 to12-year old kids, we do not have same level of computer literacy. Luckily, Our teacher teach and help us to solve it.
