Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Starting out fifty years ago from a street vendor in the Da-Tung District of Taipei City, Formosa Chang has developed into a leading business and given the traditional Taiwanese cuisine, minced pork stew with rice, a new life and image through strategy and innovation from the fast food industry. Formosa Chang now owns more than twenty branch stores in Taipei City and Taipei County. It even has a branch store in Tokyo, Japan. Its success and vitality come from the incorporation of latest industrial managements as well as the brand name marketing. Its vision and goal to be known to the whole world is progressing step by step, and it will stand firm on what it cares—good quality, good taste, good service, and customer satisfaction.

2. Summary of Our Project

From the success of Formosa Chang in its product manufacturing and industry managements, we find something worth discussing is the popularity of Formosa Chang and the growing trend and value it sets and develops based on the traditional Taiwanese cuisine, minced pork stew with rice. Through on-the-spot-investigation, we will discover and discuss the secret of the successful business from the perspective of industry managements.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

All of our members have the Internet at home via ADSL/Cable, and have at least 2M bandwith. Our School have the Internet access via optical fiber and have 100MB bandwith. So it's enough for us to process our project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The main obstacle for both teachers and students is TIME. Teachers need time to arrange for the entire project and time to instruct and teach students how to use soft wares for completing the project. Students need time to learn and be familiar with new soft wares, to discuss the project, to interview, to write manuscripts, to edit the web pages. In order to squeeze as much time as possible between all the scheduled events, exams and activities during the semester, we spend lunch break together, sometimes even after school hours, or carry on the discussion via email or msn while at home. Aside from the school days, we also have to work during weekends and even winter vacation. The inexperienced students acquired and improved a lot throughout the process. How to delegate work and teamwork are the key to the completion of the project.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The saying, “The devil is in the details.”, well illustrates how Formosa Chang achieves the top brand name in Taiwan through the persistence in minor details. It also describes how much effort we have put in and how much we have gained from the devotion to the project of Formosa Chang.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The project enables the students to put what they have learned from six different fields/subjects in school into practical use: language, life science and technology, social studies, arts and humanities, career development education, and information technology education. It also helps the teachers to self-examine and reorganize the curriculum as well as to re-evaluate what is crucial in the teaching materials. The completion of the project includes the collection and sorting of information, writing and editing of the contents, basic regulations and applying of business managements, photo shooting and editing, aesthetics in web page design, preparation before interview, self time management, teamwork, and abilities to cope with stress and new challenges. Participation in the project indeed makes a good platform for acquiring new skills and practicing learned ones.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use both free online soft wares, such as Xnview, Microsoft IE, Firefox, CDbumer XP, FileZilla, Adobe Reader, PDFCreator, MSN 8.0, as well as those under the school authorization, such as Frontpage, Dreamwaver, Word, Powerpoint, throughout the entire project. We also use hard wares, such as telephones, cellphones, digital cameras, digital video cameras, digital recorders, flashcards, computers, laptops, scanners and printers to complete the project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The students are the participants, interviewers, as well as interns in the stores for the project. They get to know the history of Formosa Chang, and understand the vision of it, how the business runs in reality, how organized and efficient in the kitchen, and how it works in the store, and how to serve customers. They not only observe as a third-person-point-of-view, but experience as part of it for the project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Since it is much more often and common for the employers and employees in Formosa Chang to get interviewed by different media or studied by college students from business departments, it is actually a rather new experience for them to get in contact with junior high students, not to mention to introduce their work and working environment to the students. They are just as interested and would like to know as much or more from the students towards their work, and they sometimes end up asking more questions of the students and the project. Both sides seem to have rewarded a lot from the project.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

From the interviews, we have noticed one significant feature in Formosa Chang, that is—enthusiasm. From the CEO, factory directors, chief managers to the employees in the kitchen even just in charge of washing vegetables, each one of them enjoys their work and is enthusiastic about everything. It is that enthusiasm that accomplishes an enthusiastic and energetic industry.
