Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Bazhou, located at the northeast of Sichuan Province, is the political, economic and cultural center of Bazhong City. Bazhou people worked diligently for generation on this field, where countless revolutionary martyrs have laid down their lives in the interest of the people. It is a traditional revolutionary base area. According to historical record, Bazhou was made a county in East Han Dynasty. Its history, however, goes make much further. During the Xia and Shang Dysnasties, it was purportedly a vassal territory of the Liang State. In the Spring and Autumn Period, it was called Bazi. In the Qin and Western Han dynasties it was called Ba County. In the Eastern Han Dynasty around the year 100 AD it was changed to Hanchang County. One hundred years later it was changed again to Baxi County. Since then, it has usually either been called Liang County or Yi County. There are rich natural resources in Bazhou, which is beneficial for people’s living. In the history, there are many places of interest, including more than 200 shrines, 3700 Buddhist status, 79 provincial key cultural relics protections, 3 tombs, red army’s headquarters and etc. Central and provincial leaders paid much attention to Bazhong’s economic construction and development. Mr. Wen Jia-bao, the prime minister has visited Bazhong revolutionary base area for two times.

2. Summary of Our Project

Mr. Yan Yangchu (Y. C. James Yen) is an educator of mass education and social reformer well-known both in China and other foreign countries. His Popular Education Movement and cause of Rural Reconstruction are of great historic significance with glaring progressive thought even seen from an angle at the present time. His hometown is Bazhong, Sichuan Province. He was once named Yan Xingfu and renamed Yan Yangchu later. In 1926, Yan launched a pilot project in Dingxian (Ting Hsien), in Hebei province. His popular education was focus in Chinese rural areas, which advocates the combination of education in school, society and family. He promoted four ways of education, including literature and art education to cure ignorance; livelihood education to cure poverty; health education to cure disease; and civic education to cure misgovernment. The farmers were expected to improve their knowledge, productivity, health and organization power through education. In the long term, they could undertake the national revolution.Yan’s thought in popular education gave new sight to Chinese and the world’s rural construction.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This is the first time we participate in the CyberFair. In those categories, we chose the local leader as our theme. After one month’s preparation, we began to design the frame of web site. The supervising teachers and the team members lack previous experience in webpage construction. We have to consult others whenever difficulties arise; hence, we have to overcome all kinds of hardships and difficulties during the process. At the end of Sep, we upload the frame and asked suggestion from Miss He. She told us to depend on facts and remarks , and simplify the web pages. In order to enrich the web pages, we did a lot of interviewing, possessing pictures and video. With our endeavor and help from Town and Talent Technologies, we have succeeded in completing the website. We are proud of ourselves and the experience is unforgettable.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

After several months’ hard work and the help of Miss He, we got much knowledge about mass education and completed the web site in time. What’s more important, we learn to 'respect, communicate, be considerate and understanding', and we come to understand the meaning of 'humility, contribution, agreeableness and gratefulness.'

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the research, we find that mass education was not only popular in the beginning of 20th century, but also be paid great attention in modern times. In the press conference after the Fourth session of the Ninth NPC , Mr. Wen Jia-bao, especially talked about mass education. He said that there were 0.9 billion farmers in Chinese population, whose education problem should be paid much attention. The government had the responsibility to ensure everyone’s opportunity to study in school. When answering journalist’s questions, he said that education was the base of national economic development. The government needed to spread the nine-year compulsory education, promote the development of vocation education and increase the education format.
