Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

By referring to the information of town record at the Guangfu Township administrator office, we comprehend that Guangfu Township was named 'Ma-Tai-An' before it was administered. Former time, each and every family would plant pigeon peas, thus Guangfu Township is the hometown of pigeon peas. The pigeon peas in Amish is 'Fataan' thus the name Mataian came from. After the restoration of Taiwan , the Kuomintang government moved to Taiwan . To commemorate the restoration, the government changed the name to 'Guangfu Township' in the year of 1947. There was another said that the mount Maxi of Guangfu town looks like a saddle (the word 'saddle' in Chinese pronounced 'Maan'), thus the name Mataian came from. The grand old men of the place and the historians didn't agree on the way of saying. Generally, people think the former saying is more correct. Under Japanese rule, it was named 'Shangdahe'. According to the county record, there were some regions for aborigine to inhabit, such as 'Mataian village', 'Mafo village', and 'Taibalang village'. These regions belonged to Taitung prefecture and were governed by Xiouguluan Fukenfenjyu. According to the data of what we have studied up, they established Hualian Harbor Prefecture after Japan occupied Taiwan and the current region of Guangfu Township were governed by the Fenglin street and Rueisuei street of Fenglin District. After the restoration of Taiwan, the first county magistrate, WenCheng Zhang, once visited the town and considered that Guangfu Township was qualified to establish as a town by its dense population and developed industry and commerce. Thus the local gentries, such as Ahu Liang, Fushou Huang, Caiwan Zhen etc., supported to establish the town to hasten the development and construction. Until March 1 st 1947, it was approved to establish as a town. To commemorate as the first town established after the restoration of Taiwan, it was named 'Guangfu Township', thus the name of Guangfu Township came from. Hereafter, delimited the six villages (belonged to Taian village) of Daan, Datueng, Daping, Dama, Dajin, and Daquan of the Fenglin Street and added to the four villages (these four villages used to belong to Taibalang village) of Duengfu (used to call Jialiduen g, Azhuomao ), Xifu (used to call Mafo village), Nanfu (used to call Shalao village), Beifu (used to call Xizhouzi, Zhiluoxi) and added to the four villages (these four villages used to call Dahe) of Dafu (used to call Jialiwan), Dafeng (used to …

2. Summary of Our Project

In recent years, youth crime has become a serious social problem. When minister Huang Mingzhen came to the prison to counsel prisoners, he deeply felt that their histories of committing crimes had started in their youth.

In order to decrease and prevent the rate of youth crime, Prison Fellowship Taiwan imitated the mode of Caffery farm in Texas America and established 'Faith Hope Love Youth Academy' in Guangfu Township, Hualien County. They take in teenagers tending to commit crimes or having misconducts; they wish to influence them in a bright way through 'the love of Juses Christ' and to keep them away from the edges of committing crimes through efforts and charity of social workers. Under the guardianship of Youth Academy, schools and the society, they can be good strength in the society.

'Younger ages of committing crimes, older ages of keeping away from prisons.' minister Huang Mingzhen wished that establishing Youth Academy could reduce crime rate, that through Cyberfair contest, the public could know more about Youth Academy, and that every one could care more about youth crime to contribute to public security.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Using techonological knowledge to understand more about the environment we live in is our greatest happiness. During this time, we visited and interviewed the community, having conversations with elder people and experts. We know more that the society has changed and what kind of help these lost teenagers are hoping for. We really are not able to and have no power to make many differences about this fast-changing society. We wish, however, through our little effort, more people can understand that two extreme states cannot exist in an individual without having any problems. We cannot stand being selfish and not caring about others. Therefore, knowing that how important this task is, we all anticipate that we can be future volunteers to endow our strength and mind and make our mutual environment a better place.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The purpose of this research project is to let others know 'Faith Hope Love Youth Academy', moreover, to understand the strategies which the government executed on river remediation. By Cyberfiar, others can know that besides having the biggest comb dam in the world and mudflows, Dasing community is a beautiful place as well. The government used all different engineerings to remediate rivers. The methods may not apply to what experts acknowledge and may not really withstand damages, but our research project can help every visitor understand all that has done for the community. Every team member cooperated to finish every task. Through dividing into groups, mutual discussion, searching and organizing data and interviews, we apply all we have learned to our real life. Life testifies what we have learned. Our attitude is more concentrated and questioning skills are more refined in every interview and field survey. We also encouraged each other to make things go more perfectly. Changing from careless to careful, we let our interviewees feel that we were sincere and genuine.

Although we do not have the professional skills and knowledge about our subject, we have developed our enthusiasm for our project through teachers' instruction and training during the process.
