1. Description of Our Community
Taoyuan County Fushing Township is proud of three mounts: Najie Mt., Fuchi Mt. and Chian Mt.. With an altitude of 1520m, Najie Mt. has a foundation stone of serial No. 1532, as Fuchi Mt.. The name of Najie Mt. is originated from “Najie Tribe”, where “Najie” means a small bamboo, i.e. arrow bamboo in Atayal dialect. In fact, Najie Mt. is well-known for its steep peak with 80-90 degree towering cliff at eastern and southern sides. In the western and northern sides, there are densely packed jungles of arrow bamboos, making it difficult for climbing.
In the former times, Najie Mt. Trail was a major path linking Kesiyono people to the outside world. Walking along this way to Lahao Mt., you can reach Dawan and Beiheng Road. And, you can reach Hsinchu County Chianshi Township via Niaocui Mt; or reach Hsinchu County Guansi Township via Niaocui Mt..
2. Summary of Our Project
The major purpose of Cyberfair is to extend Internet technology into every corner of the society. Setting our target for the students of Kuihui Elementary School, we--some college students from Department of Commercial Design, Christian Chung Yuan University--hope to get an improved insight into Atayal legend and beautiful Najie Mt. while teaching these naive kids with some skills in three aspects. (1) Learning attitude and human dignity: fostering these kids with correct learning attitude and sound human dignity, while documenting their everyday lives. (2) Digital information technology: providing technical support to these kids with computer know-how and improve their potential competitiveness. (3) Cultural research& analysis: setting up database and research subjects with first-hand and second-hand information via field interview, investigation and exploration, while conducting cultural research and analysis.
3. Our Computer and Internet Access
A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6
C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6
E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):
One computer room, over 20 networked computers, one laser printer and a MFP as well as a V8 camera, a programmer and a projector.
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
Time and traffic are the biggest bottleneck of this project. Since all of us are female college students from Department of Commercial Design, Christian Chung Yuan University, the traffic is crucial for the smooth development of this event. Luckily, Ding-Wu Wu, Dean of our department, agreed to drive us by car to the destination. But, Ding-Wu Wu had only time to drive us twice a month, making it difficult to satisfy the requirement of project implementation. With the strong assistance of Teacher Rui-mei and some practice teachers of Kuihui Elementary School, these kids could collect their stories and try to create website during our absence.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
During the process of Cyberfair project, all participants are third year college students, who must spend a whole day in Kuihui Elementary School every two weeks, without mentioning a tour along the snaky roads. But, when we arrived at Kuihui Elementary School, we were warmly welcomed by Teacher Rui-mei, schoolmaster and the teaching staff of Kuihui Elementary School as well as lovely kids. These kids responded positively when they learnt drawings or computer skills. What impressed us deeply was their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Being driven by such an important mission, we had to think seriously how to teach these kids and provide them an access to the Internet. However, original intensions cannot be fully realized within a limited timeframe. During the interaction, the college students of Department of Commercial Design, Christian Chung Yuan University and Little Digital Heroes of Kuihui Elementary School had a good time. We think we are held responsible for teaching these kids some knowledge as gifts.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
During the interaction with these kids in the half-semester, we haven’t found that these kids have any blueprint or challenging dreams. We feel confused whether the landlocked regions block off the children with the outside world and knowledge, or most of the students can obtain feasible knowledge through current education system. Isn’t it sarcastic to the current government that there isn’t a high school in this mountainous area despite of more welfare government polices for the indigenous people? With the widening difference between rural and urban regions, the aboriginal students of elementary schools cannot obtain an insight into the outside world and a promising future in a digital era, if basic education isn’t fully implemented at all levels.
