Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taipei Arena is a new landmark of Taipei City with a verity of functions. It is located in the vicinity of our school (Taipei Municipal Dun Hua Primary School). In order to know better of our community as well as the latest technologies involved in this 21st century construction, our team decided to have a deeper understanding of this modern building, including both hardware and software facilities of our project subject – The Taipei Arena. Welcome to the Taipei Arena.

2. Summary of Our Project

Taipei Arena was opened on Dec. 1, 2005. To view the building from outside, you will see an enormous modern building with glass walls all around it. The building is served to be a multi-functional activity center for sport games, art exhibitions, drama shows, and all kinds of gathering. In our project, we will not only learn about this building, but also to personally involve in the different activities that have been and will be held in this center.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use school PC for this project when we are at the school, which has a 512MB memory, 80GB HD, Acer power FT100 main board, Dream Weaver MX & Photo Impact 8.0 softwares. And we use ADSL to transfer and search information when at home.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Integration among classes:Our17 team members are from ten different classes, each has its own class schedule, so it is not easy to arrange meetings for project discussions.

2.Regular school home work:All team members already have a lot of homework to do, same as every other student in the school, and some have to take piano lessons or other lessons after school. We had to squeeze time for this project, which was quite stressful for every one of us.

3.Mentality difference:There are 10 girls and 7 boys in our team. The 10 little ladies behave like big sisters, and the 7 boys like little brothers. Big sisters are always anxious to complete things, while little brothers take their time slowly. Teachers have to put special attention to the boys to make sure things are on schedule.

4.Incapable of using computer hardware and software:We had to started from very basic stuff and face many obstacles.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

During the project period, we have been facing many difficulties in making webpage. There was a time when we began to consider asking our parents to do the work for us, but our teachers emphasized again and again to us: “What you do is what you learn.” We must not use outside help, but just show people what the best we can do is, and people will appreciate the effort we made. The process is more important than the result. This is another valuable thing that we learned from doing this project. After this project, we feel that we are very lucky to be living in this environment, to have Taipei Arena in our community, because we can have better chance to use this place, including doing exercise, watching sports games, seeing dramas, etc.

We think that is why people say “No cross, no crown”.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1.To achieve the goal of “knowing your community” 2.Learning how to share with other people 3.Ability to express and communicate 4.Integration of the 9-Year Curriculum 5.Spirit of “Independent Case Study” 6.Coordination of Teaching and Learning Education http://librarywork.taiwanschoolnet.org/gsh2006/gsh4594/index.htm

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We are all just 5th-grade students and at first we thought the project was nothing but collecting information on Taipei Arena from the internet and then we would be ready to participate in the International Schools Cyberfair 2006. None of us has the experience of case study, not to mention working together as a team of 17 members. There were problems in the beginning when we assigned jobs. Everyone had different ideas. Then we realized that for such a big subject, we had to use team work spirit so as to share different works.

Must one go abroad for sightseeing? Before this project, we would answer “Yes”, but after this project, we realized that the best place for sightseeing is actually in our neighborhood, just a few blocks away. When we see the shinning Titanium roof of Taipei Arena, we feel our life should be as shinning and full of liveliness
