Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

At the early stage of Taiwanese agricultural society, people start work at daybreak and retire at sunset. Day-to-day amusement in addition to gather in front of temple plaza or under the tree, to chat idly and play chess; as well as to invite a dramatic troupe to perform traditional play, such as kua-a-hyi, nien-kua, po-tai-hyi, shadow puppets, etc. At that time, temple and theater are major leisure places for people. Currently, Taiwan is a contemporary society with diversified culture, thus, items of leisure entertainment are varied. Under the lash of TV, movies, popular music, audience of traditional drama have gradually run off and performance of traditional play has also slight day-by-day. Although performing environment of traditional drama is very hard, traditional art workers are still willing to pass it on and to maintain traditional art performance in order to allow Taiwan traditional culture to be continued; as well as to hear countryside melody for children.

2. Summary of Our Project

At the end of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of Chin dynasty, Taiwanese explain-and-sing music being brought in by immigrants from Changchou and Chuanchou; at that time, it was called as ? tai-wan-kua-a ? . To accommodate with local customs and practices as well as to combine Taiwan folk ballad, ? tai-wan-kua-a ? , also called as ? tai-wan-nien-kua ? , has been gradually taking shape with thick locality tints afterwards . Going the round of in society ? tai-wan-kua-a ? has already three hundred years. At the early stage, through it, ancestor ' s hard-working and happiness, anger, sorrow and joy of life have been expressed; as well as it was the important vitality food for them. Currently, explain-sing arts has gradually declined and even more facing to be an awkward situation of fail to be handed down from past generations. Through admiration and study ? nien-kua ? , in addition to allow us to look into ancestors ' various life, important local culture can be promoted and to find ? tai-wan-kua-a ? back which has been gradually forgotten.

The network environment at school: As a public school in the metropolis of Taiwan, we have better developed Internet facilities in school. There are three well-equipped multimedia computer labs in our school. We also have one computer per classroom, and one computer per teacher. In total, there are more than three hundred computers in our school, which is sufficient for teachers and students to use. In August, 1999, Department of Information Education, Education Department of Taipei City Government established an optical fiber with the capacity of 10MB download and 10MB upload. The network environment at home: All the team members have computers at home which are connected to ADSL, so working at home, we can transmit the data by e-mail and Yahoo Messenger.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Obstacle of language communication When visiting the aged people, it is necessary in Taiwanese. Most kids understand it but ask questions in Mandarin. For those kids with Hakka as mother language, do not understand at all; assistance of teachers or volunteers are needed. In addition, as the text of “nien-kua” is all in Taiwanese, if performer sings or speaks or skills of shifting melody unclearly, it may cause misunderstanding.

It is difficult to experience predecessors living way Taiwan nien-ka has been declined. Currently, it is formally performed only in Community College and Taiwanese seminar while those on streets, temples and night markets has been totally disappeared. It is a pity for young generation unable to personal experience predecessors living. Through interview with aged people, different turns of life as living environment will be realized.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Although performing environment of traditional drama is very hard, traditional art workers are still willing to pass it on and to maintain traditional art performance in order to allow Taiwan traditional culture to be continued; as well as to hear countryside melody for children.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Through study of traditional Taiwan nien-kua, it is expected that from understanding and appreciation traditional arts and realize its improvement; as well as through study of traditional music, people living conditions, change of society consciousness and how to reflect culture changes have been conferred. In addition to increase knowledge, we have also learned research methodology, interview techniques, reports arrangement, usage of digital equipment and application to internet as well as related computer techniques.

During the process, division based on personal capability and willingness, emphasizing teamwork spirit, sharing and cooperation, mistakes and time will be reduced and shorten.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

General public do not know about Taiwan nien-kua, only the aged people. We visited Professor Chang Tsuan-wen of Taichung Education University, Yang Hsiu-chin and Hung Jui-chen. With warm attitude, teachers gave an in-depth explanation of Taiwan nien-kua. Especially, Hung Jui-chen came to Ming-Hu Primary School, teaches us the song of “Thanks”. It is expected that taking part in selection of Mother's Day Concert to allow more people to have opportunity to appreciate Taiwan traditional arts.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

For those city students have never touched nien-kua, when they heard it at the first time, it is an old-fashioned one and for the aged people. Through in-depth study, nien-kua text of persuade good is the one being missed with the current popular songs. It is quite different with unstrained imagination, amusement but not vulgar of the interesting text; as well as with historic story and folk legend to explain-sing (neither telling story). Thus, the stereotyped impression of nien-kua has been changed. Although drama and performance of traditional music are different to the current one, it is worth to be learned and maintained. Meantime, through education to understand the importance and sense of mission to preserve traditional arts, the pass-on of traditional culture and arts will be actually workable for the next generation.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to Chang Tsuan-wen, Hung Jui-chen and Yang Hsiu-chin with providing part of characters data; usage of music, film, pictures authorized by Hung Jui-chen and Yang Hsiu-chin; as well as Lin Chen-Chung with His-hu Primary School kua-a-hyi troupe film. With these outstanding artists assistance, the study has been well-done.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Following to times change, music and performance of traditional nien-kua has not been welcomed but ancestry ? nien-ka spirit ? has to be continuously preserved and passed-on. During study process, although nien-kua performance has been declined, nien-kua spirit creation style within Taiwanese popular songs is still very important. There are many Taiwanese popular songs still with explain-sing style and even creators have insisted nien-kua spirit to harmony with language modulation in tune. This pays respect to predecessors and the ? nien-kua spirit ? will be passed-on.
