Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Dun-Hua Community Park is located in the business area of Taipei City, although it is a median size park, but it serves many functions to our community. It has facilities for children and for adult residents. It is a great place for people to rest and for their recreation activities. This discovery issue is not only important to the plants in the park, it is also important to the people who lived in the community.

2. Summary of Our Project

The subject of this project study is “Learn from our park and cherish it- A Study of Dun-Hua Community Park”. The main drive of this subject is based on above. There seven items to be studied under this subject, they are: Community. Plants, Insects, Birds, Environment, Information Technologies, and Service while Learning. The basic elements in the park are the plants, there are beautiful flowers and tree that we believe can be the first step to bring people closer to nature, and to care more about our environment. We hope this study could serve as a bridge to encourage people love their home, and to introduce our community to people around the world.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We use T1 at school, and wireless network in Mr. Brwon Coffee shop where we have meetings; At home we use regular ADSL.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The major problem we have is how to communicate among members. Especially there are members from the 3rd grade. Every time when we have a group tour, the voluntary parents have to take time to escort us to the place. The scheduling is always difficult. Team members have different school class at different hours, even after class there are different extra curriculum involved. So we have to schedule our meeting in advance and be flexible just in case. luckily we have the volunteer from Kan-Ning Medical College from the community to assist us and give us hands-on trainning. But this only can be done on Holidays when the school is closed, so Mr. Brown Coffee Shop becomes our second school classroom in the whole project period. We shared the few notebook computers in the coffee shop.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We should put more attention on our own community environment, the place where we can feel it everyday. Let’s begin from the small parts, when we noted its change with heart, we would also feel the touching. Maybe, one can find some answer to ease one’s pressure. We can all see a view from the things we care about. Let’s open our mind to appreciate the place, and to have our crowded environment broadened in our heart.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In this research porject, We explored the community environment of Dun-Hua Park, We collected from internet, library, reference books, and reports all kinds of materials. Also we have field survey and interview to enhance our subject. The concrete result for curriculum combination are: (1)Languages – Reading, collecting, gathering data and information. (2)Social Field – Use of social resource, field survey, and found questions. (3)Science and Life Technologies – To feel the lives in the park, the special features, and to use computer software to prepare web pages. (4)Health and PE Field – For outdoors activities, we brought rain coat and wear protection to protect our selves. (5)Art and Fine Art Field - To enjoy the beauty of the nature, taking pictures, edit and design the web pages. (6)General Field – Learned team work, communication, schedule arrangement, and their importance.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In the past three months, we spent a lot of time learning how to do web pages and design the website structures. But we also did many real visits to the people doing exercise at the park and the people who maintain the park. We use phone, internet, interview, and field survey to do our project. We found positives thing as well as negatives in the subject park. I met many neighbors and they were surprised that I could do such research project. I have confidence that I can have the job done properly.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We found problems with the park and the possible solution suggestion. We passed them to the park supervisor to remind him what should be avoid and what be emphasized. He will pass the information to Taipei City Government for reference.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

I was told by my father to join the project team, but I have never heard of this contest before. I confirmed later with teacher then learned more.In our group, we surveyed the flowers and trees in the park, the facilities of the park, etc. We also use devices to record the noise and air pollution in the park. We have training courses to learn how to use somputer software such as Photoinpact10?Frontpage2003?Cool360?and Gif Animator . I page design, I am responsible for “Photo Album of the Park” and to take full 360 degree view video with Cool360. Cool360 is ease to use but have to be careful not to twist the pictures.I like our team and this project. The community park is a place with life, we need to put attention to give it care, like planting a tree.
