Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Surrounded by the dominating Central Mountain and the vast Pacific Ocean, our lovely country, Hualien, has infinite vitality. We can hear the familiar sound “Ka-ta ka-ta ”often, made by our best partner- the trains. Since we grew up in this land, we have been interested in this familiar partner. In this project, we visited many communities and try to find out their memories of the history of the trains. This activity made us understand the railroad clearer, and it also shortened the distance between our community and us. What's more, to those travelers or foreign tourists, they can also reference our webpage. By doing so, the local attraction can be promoted. The more we are involved in the project, the more we love our community, Hualien. We are proud of being a citizen of Hualien.

2. Summary of Our Project

In this project, we decided to do research on “The Railway between Hualien and Taitung (The Hua-Tung Railway).” This railroad has brought Hualien many memories. Maybe we did not experience the exactly same things in this railroad, but we still closely connect to each other. For understanding these wonderful stories, we went to interview many people, including the passengers and the employees of the railway bureau. Then we compared the results with our documents. Finally, we try to connect the introduction of each train station in the Hua-Tung Railway, the history, some true stories, and some problems that we observed together to complete our project.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

As for the Internet, if the linking speed can be faster and smoother at Hualien Senior HIgh School, we can get much more information and suggestions from those people who are highly interested in our project.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The first difficulty that we met is to arrange the data. Through the hard work of our teammate, we found much information, and we got even more complicated material through our interview. It is a difficult job to observe the relations between so much data, so we visited many experienced employees of the railroad bureau and finally found out the connection. And then, we faced some difficulties of the techniques. This was the first time for most of our teammates to attend this kind of activity, so sometimes the outcome could not achieve our expectation. Therefore, we studied up many reference books and consulted many experts. Finally, we overcame all the difficulties and achieved our goal. We learned a lot through these challenges, and we learned to believe that we can do anything we want to do.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

The more we are involved in the project, the more we love our community, Hualien. We are proud of being a citizen of Hualien.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

6. Our courses always give us the idea of merging learning with our daily life and of walking into our neighborhood. We did visit and interview many people for our project, and we were touched by their welcome and passion. We finally learned that our neighborhood and its stories are so cute and charming.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We needed to use many different kinds of computer software to help arrange our data. For example, we used Microsoft Word to order our information, Microsoft PowerPoint to give a brief, Photo Impact to deal with our photographs, and so on.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We interviewed the real people and real things related to Hua-Tung Railway. We got some relevant information about our topics-railways. What's more, we also interviewed some public servants by using telephones. This was what we were different from others.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Take the history and some historic products for example, we not only collected certain useful information, but also had a deeper understanding about our railways.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We introduced some useful websites related to railways. This was good for other people who were interested in railways to get more information. What's more, to those travelers or foreign tourists, they can also reference our webpage. By doing so, the local attraction can be promoted.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When interviewing conductors or some elders, we might encounter some problems that the interviewees might have some strange accents. The generation gap may arise during the process. We might not understand each other well. In this way, it was possible that we waste much time doing nothing. At that time, we had no choice but to use our body language to understand each other.
