Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Taiwan 'kuei', Hakkas 'kuei' and Taiwan aborigines 'kuei' respectively have different styles and flavors. Restricted to our time and schedule, we can just visit the kuei shops located in the southern area of Taiwan (including Jiayi) as well as traditional market kuei sells primarily.

2. Summary of Our Project

“Kuei” once played an indispensable role in traditional agricultural society. No matter whether in the Wedding and Funeral, or during Chinese New Year’s season or on the Tomb Sweeping Festival, “Kuei” was widely and popularly seen and taken. However, with the change and development of age, we have gradually forgotten the relish of Kuei. In view of this, we are deeply concerned how to pass on the unforgettable and sweet Flavors of Kuei to the next generation. Our project will focus on several subjects such as the history, stories, children’s ballad, articles, and different kinds of Kuei. Let the special and secret delicacy belonging to traditional Chinese spread widely around the world. Let’s go! Follow the “Flavor-Seekers” and enjoy the fine trip of “Kuei”.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

To achieve some tasks, there are always many obstacles in the way. Before success comes, all one can do is to overcome difficulties step by step to find out the way. As teenagers, we are playful, active, and endlessly energetic. But sometimes we are naughty, doing nothing serious and meaningful, which makes our teachers not know what to do. Our society put much attention on the academic performances. However, we also have to spend time going on our project. Therefore, how to look after both sides is a challenge for us. As for English translation, we need someone to consult with. Our teachers told us that as we join in the activity, it is our aim to complete the project in time. We will meet many problems and have to cope with them. Refusing to take defeat is our motive power.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Teachers’ direction, classmates’ mutual helps, and the participation of the community is the main reasons that our project goes smoothly. By attending this activity, we learn something important and the members of the group are move acquainted with one another. We make a team, and the project is going smooth. When we think, “Before long, we will be paid for what we have done,” we are excited and more devoted to our work. Through the Internet, we desire to win the honor not only for ourselves but also for our school, community and those that help us. We’d like to share the honor with them.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. This year schools reorganization curriculum subject -- childhood recollection. 2. (1) Social branch domain. (2) Synthesizes the field of activity. (3) country liberal arts domain. (7) language domain. 3.(1) Learn to share information on on–line Aject digital school (2)Use computer software to make our project (3) Surf the internet to look for information we need (4) Personal Interaction :We were shy on the first interview, but then we did better and better (5) The making of kuei : Ms.pan tough us how to make kuei . We found that only by making kuei by ourselves can we know the interest and fun of doing it.

4.On the Internet or in books, they have little data talking about Kuei. Kuei is most found in history references or traditional customs. By intervtewing with the shopkeeper of Kuei, we knew and learned much about Kuei.

5.The members from three classes make up this group “Flavor-seekers” We have met many difficulties from deciding the topic to completing the project. But we were patient with and considerate of one another. The more problems we solved, the more professional we became.

6.These days, we have been talking about Kuei, and we seem to influence our classmates and friends. After finishing the project, our teachers will turn the topic to school, and make it one of the social domain and synthesizing the field of activities domain teaching materials. 7.Because of the educational system, Taiwanese students are burdened with academic stress. They have no passion to care about what is surrounding them and lack the ability of action and comprehension. 8.We can get the information easily because of the convenience of the Internet. We know more about Kuei by field trips the Internet is convenient, but after all, it is just a kind of tool. We can learn through it, but we cannot depend on it for everything.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

These who join in this activity represent our community as ambassadors. We have a mission to introduce our specialty to the whole world. 1.Unite activities of teenagers: We have the chance to get in touch with students from Thailand and Hong Kong. By the interaction, we know the importance of interpersonal relationship. And we also know that we belong to the whole world, not only to Taiwan. 2..Interaction between the school and the community:Our School’s Festival in December focused on Taiwan. We popularized all kinds of Kuei, with rice printed on it. 3.Try to spread the culture of Kuei to the world by taking the International activity. 4.Propaganda:We deeply thank for the help from a man who sells Kuei in Chung-Lun, and we helped him to advertise his Kuei shop.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Effect and Conflict: People have unlimited potential The environment without boundaries. In school, in the community on the Internet and everywhere in the world, we’d like to give a try. Our eyes are widely open, we learn new things and we on the advantages of others. We made a question air, and were shocked by the result. Those born in 40’s or 50’s have feelings for Kuei, however, their later generations don’t. Young people regard Kuei as something out of date and low-class. They don’t know how delicious Kuei is. People in Taiwan seldom buy and sell Kuei. Maybe one day we will lose this traditional delicacy. As a member of the new generation, we should care more about our homeland and make the flavor of Kuei last forever.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1) Jiang ke: Driver: When interview. (2) Su fa: Interview activity arrangement. (3) Community public figures: Ms. Pan Mingch'an - the instruction makes 'meat dry oil onion kuei', Wang Qing He gentleman, Wang Datzu, Ms. Wang - the assistance senate visits with understands 'kuei' the manufacture process, Su Uncle Soviet -- holds the marriage celebration.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

As we work hard on our project, we deeply feel that it is worth doing. We have fun, we ask and learn, we hear and see something new, and we experience unforgettable things. It is like a full trip. No matter how advanced technology is, how fast the world has changed, Kuei represents a symbol of localized persistence. If we had a time machine, we would get back to the old good times to explore and to find those beautiful things in Taiwan. Just like “rice ”, an ancient plant on earth long time ago, was discovered the secret by ancient people. Rice, therefore, was turned into all kinds of delicious food, such as Kuei, and deeply influenced our life, culture and diet.

Besides, we learned that a solution emerges with changes. When we visited the Chung-lun village, we found about two-thirds of the population lived by Kuei. In those early days, people didn’t have so many exotic food and snacks as we do now, so they made most of rice and turned rice into delicious Kuei. It is the “humble “ Kuei that brings a miracle to the Chung-Lun village.

If you experience the life the community, you will find a lovelier Taiwan. Few people will take efforts to make Kuei. In 2006,”Flavor-Seekers”record on the Internet and pass the tradition on. We hope everyone will taste the special flavor of Kuei, and let the flavor last from generation to generation. Our trip is over, but the flavor is still in our mouths, we are touched and moved deeply in our heart.
