Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Everyone has heard of the story of “Hongyeh Minor League Baseball.” We are located inside this legendary mountainous area. This is a place free from pollution and disturbance, with only the beautiful land and pure hearts. On top of the Hongyeh Minor League Baseball, we also have the Hongyeh Hot Spring, Butterfly Valley, Bunun Tribe, eight-part harmony, and the naïve and enthusiastic Bunun tribesmen. Through this website, we wish that more friends would come to know us, and contribute to this story-filled tribe.

2. Summary of Our Project

Hongye is a place woven from its humanistic culture and the nature. It is endowed with unique natural resources. In the past, older people live with this piece of land in the most natural way. They created the history, and made the Hongyeh Village today. As time goes by, we the Little Heroes take on the responsibility to pass on the tradition now. The professional ramie clothing technique has been declining with the passage of time. Today, the new generation has to take on the mission of carrying on the tradition. In this program, we will learn, carry on and record this technique with the help of the latest technology today. And through our record, we would like to share the history of Hongye with the world, in the hope that more people will fall in love with this land.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:1

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

Actually, Hongyeh Elementary School located at uphill does not have a stable network connection. Disconnection always happens, or there is unstable connection during the transmission process. Therefore, we make use of hardware equipment to carry the information as much as for both teaching and Internet surfing. Our school is connected via academic network, while at home, we are connected via the broadband service of Chung Hwa Telecom. Therefore, the networking problem may have to be dealt with when we go back to the downtown. This is a problem that needs to be considered in terms of the network environment.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Technology Team members are not very familiar with the website. Though they have experience with the web, they are not really proficient in the technique of website design. By learning from the web and books, team members have more contacts with website production and the related techniques. The team also borrows classrooms from the school for group discussion as a way to learn.

Timeline Some of the team members’ classes conflict with the arranged time, leading to uneven allocation of time. Some members with more free time are usually required to work harder. Division of labor is exercised. Some members who could not participate in person are asked to do more information and teaching material collection work. The information is then handed over to members with more free time for teaching.

Team Team members usually fail to meet or discuss together because of faculty or society affairs. This leads to lag-behind in progress or things being forgotten. Teachers at Hongyeh Elementary School would remind us, urge us, and require us to finish the things as scheduled once and again.

Language The language problem we face is not one of communication difficulty, but that some children make errors in pronunciation or writing Chinese characters, and some of them even do not know how to write a word. More patience is needed to guide them, and teachers are asked to give them more time to finish the task. After collecting their information, counter-checking is conducted.

Experience The whole project has been conducted in the dark, because only one member has experience working with the last year’s team, but very limited previous experience is left behind. Discuss more with the school teachers and get more assistance from them, and then gradually work out a better way to conduct the activities. Although many things are new to us, the teachers’ guidance has relieved our worries very much.

Progress In fact, our progress has always lagged behind, because of the heavy workload of the third-year university curriculum and the many activities for the fourth-year members. Members may not be able to meet even at one or two o’clock at midnight because of their busy work. After collecting the necessary information, use the winter vacation or weekends to make up for the progress as much as possible. Then, the relatively freer time during the beginning of the second semester, when fewer activities are organized, is used to catch up with the progress.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We finally finished the website amidst the bustle of work. Though it does seem very sophisticated, every bit of it is the result of our hard work. Perhaps the website does not look very well-developed; it presents all the things we have learnt from project. Conflicts and communication problems did appear from time to time during the process, but fortunately, all team members are nice. We are grateful about this. Everyone is relieved when the whole project is finished. We have made our effort in passing down our history and tradition. During the process, we have become part of the historical link. We hope that someone would continue to carry on this culture in the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The whole project is mainly worked out in concert with the school disciplines and programs of “language, arts and culture, information, society.” Through this project, students get familiar with their own tribal language by engaging in conversation with the elders. And through the artistic creation, students are allowed to re-create the original appearance of the stories through imagination. Moreover, in the social domain, students come to know more about the regional culture and humanistic history of their own place. Finally, all works are presented in front of the readers through the website production. With the complete project, students are able to learn multi-disciplinary knowledge.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Computer hardware: Desktop computer……information collection from the Internet, webpage production, communication and contact (provided by school, provided by volunteer teachers) Digital camera……shooting the classroom teaching situation, production of teaching materials (provided by school, provided by volunteer teachers) Network…………information search, data transmission (provided by school, ADSL at home) Computer software: PhotoImpact10……edit and refine photos Namo6.0………….Produce and edit webpage Power Director…….convert and output movie files WordXP…………edit data for webpage production General equipment: mobile phone………keep contact and inform others of related affairs DV………………shooting the process of production DC………………shooting the process of interview

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We mainly play the role of a tradition communicator. Through the interaction with tribal elders, we record the process of making clothes with ramie. Through the contact and communication with the teachers and tribal elders, we are able to pass on this technique and language. And through the website, we disseminate the knowledge and skills we learnt, so that readers everywhere can understand this to-be-lost art and language. Therefore, we have acted as the ambassadors and spokespersons through our website and the interviews.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

This technique cannot be adequately elaborated in books, and cannot be learnt as one wishes. After all, it is subject to the skill and language problems. Of course, even on the website, we have not been able to fully present the situation when we learnt this. However, we have at least tried to understand and learn this culture and skill. This has undoubtedly helped the passing-on of the ramie and Bunun culture, and is the effect and impact that this project has on us.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Not much intellectual property rights problem is involved in the production of the whole website, because we have made it based on our feelings or direct discussion. We have not searched for on-line articles or articles in books for processing, mainly because such knowledge and technique is an inheritance of culture that is imparted by direct face-to-face communication. Therefore, no intellectual property rights are involved.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During the process of the entire project, we always come across such problems as lag-behind progress or incomprehensive description. The help of the volunteer teachers or the school teachers is often needed to revise our glossary and work, and then we can comprehensively and accurately express what we really mean. Also, since it is an inheritance of the artistic culture, we often surprised ourselves with our own findings during the whole teaching process. These may exactly be our findings, lesson and surprises.
