Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Zuoying National Sports Training Center, the arena of Kaohsiung 2009 World Games and the modern multi-sports stadium (the Kaohsiung Dome) are in the Zuoying district of Kaohsiung.

The Zuoying district is an area with cultural richness, and its municipal development is progressing quite rapidly. It won the first prize for good administration in a recent national competition organized by the Executive Yuan of Taiwan.

The Zuoying district is in the north of Kaohsiung. It is bounded in the east by Sanmin district, south by Gushan district, and in the north by Nanzih district. Zuoying faces west to the Taiwan Strait. There is a beautiful Lotus Pond in the Zuoying district and it is an important operation base for the Taiwan Navy. With the advantage of its location, communication between the District and the rest of the country and within the district itself is quite effective.

The World Games Association has officially authorized Kaohsiung to host this great sports event in 2009 during a signatory ceremony on June 14th, 2004. This is an honor for Kaohsiung, and will enhance the recognition of Taiwan on the world stage, and promote the image of Kaohsiung city on a global scale. The competition arena of the World Games, the Kaohsiung Dome, currently being built in Zuoying will be completed in 2005. Transportation to and within the Dome has been carefully planned to ensure easy access for everyone. The Zuoying Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Interchange Station makes it easy for people to transfer to the Dome from virtually anywhere within the City of Kaohsiung. In addition, participants and others attending the games can enjoy the easy road access to Zuoying. We can say 'Kaohsiung Dome' is a mark of promoting the climate of sports and the standard of arena, also a way for Kaohsiung to become an international city.

2. Summary of Our Project

The two topics we researched are 'Zuoying National Sports Training Center' and 'The World Games in Kaohsiung'. The focus of the two topics related to locations in Zuoying District of Kaohsiung City. The Zuoying National Sports Training Center is established to provide facilities for, among other things, the training of outstanding contestants while the World Games in Kaohsiung is an event aimed at bringing honor and proud to Kaohsiung. It is also a unique opportunity for Taiwan to step into the international stage in sports, and a celebration of the victory of our sports diplomacy. The development of sports in a country partly represents its power and spirit. The Zuoying National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung plays a significant role in the development of sports in Taiwan. Every athlete who has won honor for Taiwan in international sports competitions have been trained at the center. Not only has the Zuoying National Sports Training Center contributed to the achievements of various excellent athletes, it is also as a cradle of national sports competitions. Behind the success are countless tears and sweat that are invisible to see.

After many years of planning, Kaohsiung has won the honor of hosting the 8th World Games. To welcome this grand sports event to Kaohsiung, Mayor Hsieh announced that the goal to develop Kaohsiung as a 'healthy city”. As a result of these games, we believe that sports in Taiwan will be developed even more in the coming years.

For the purpose of this research, we hope that the government can think highly of athletics and the citizens can support it, too. In this way, every excellent athlete can bring forth all his/her energy and win glory for our country. We welcome the Kaohsiung World Games and we hope that it will help generate the 'Zuoshiun Spirit' again, and create a healthy challenge to Beijing Olympic Games.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

At the beginning of the project, we had a lot of new things to learn, we were also scared. But the teachers used lunch break to teach us, we got used to everything and completed the first step successfully. We often used our lunch break and school closing time to discuss with classmates and teachers. The time was short and we were unable to discuss many things, but whatever progress we made along the way was due to the contribution of everyone involved. Sometimes, we could not control our timing, such as when we had to attend lessons after school or catch the bus…etc. And we also encountered many problems during interview. For instance, we found that one of our recording pens was broken after an interview, so we had to recall the interview by relying on classmates’ memories. Another problem was when we went to some places to do the interviews; we found that some of these places were under repairs, so we were unable to go. These difficulties gave us some headache, but in the end, we succeeded. After these lessons, of course, we were not so careless anymore. We would check recording tools carefully, and confirm that the interview place or interviewees were available for the schedules. Therefore, we not only saved a lot of time, but we also had more effective interviews after those initial headaches. During the project, we always ran a race with “time”. If there was a mistake or carelessness, the rate of progress would decline drastically. Therefore, time management was one major issue for us. As time passed, everyone’s heart blended into the project gradually. We were not as muddled as we were at the beginning. From the beginning till now, difficulty was testing us, but it also taught us how to keep moving forward, never admitting defeat; and we were constantly learning how to overcome these problems. Therefore, we can say, “A seed needs to be watered with full mental and physical efforts, perspiration and tears, so that it can bloom bright and gorgeous flowers.”

5. Our Project Sound Bite

When we were making the project, we had many unexpected difficulties. But these difficulties made the project more worth doing. We all saw adversities as challenges and handled them very well. We also hope that these national contestants and coaches can open another diplomacy door for Taiwan. By making this project, we saw people from different departments relating to sports, such as hard-working contestants, coaches, councillors who speak for Kaohsiung people, active 2009 World Games Preparation Committee and those working at the -Zuoying Sports Center, the home of Taiwan’s sports. If we did not undertake this research project, our members would not have had such a wonderful opportunity to meet these people and learn so much from them in the process. So it was a great chance to learn. These are knowledge which we could not have got from textbooks.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

There was a saying, “Travel ten thousand kilometers rather than read volumes of books.”Learning is not one-sided; it is not confined to schools or books. We had chances to visit many places that we would not normally go to after classes by attending the research and activities of the project. We even learned a lot of new knowledge.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Kaohsiung City Mayor, Frank Hsieh, turned up for “Kaohsiung 25th Celebration” held by the Kaohsiung City Council. The head of a legislative body said, “Kaohsiung is stepping towards internationalism, and Kaohsiung Council reformation is moving forward, too. To further bring the government closer to the people, our first objective is to get a “Councilors Political Train to Campuses” to drive to Hsin Hsing Senior High School, Kaohsiung Senior High School, San-Min Home Economics High School and Kaohsiung Girls’ Senior High School…etc. This will make our youngsters know more about Kaohsiung City’s municipal reconstructions and future developments.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We chose the Zuoying National Sports Training Center, also known as 'the cradle of the sports world', as our research theme. Before going into the details of this monographic study, we would like to show appreciation to the team of coaches support them and help to develop athletics behind the contestants who always have victory smile under focus of flash lamps. Because of these heroes who often work behind the scenes with silent devotion and dedication, that the contestants can be proud of their achievements and honor today. We hope to research the life of these contestants in order to know them better, even as they train hardly and fight to win glory for our country. We will also research into the lives of the heroes who are behind the success of these athletes. The 2009 World Games is the great chance for Taiwan to advance in international sports and show Taiwan's ability in hosting big sports event. We hope our contestants can have beautiful performance in the 2009 World Games, and our people can work hard together to show the 'Friendliness and Beauty of Taiwan' to the world. We believe that this is the best chance for 'Marketing Taiwan, Elevating it to the international stage'. For Kaohsiung, hosting the 2009 World Games makes it the first city in Taiwan to host such an international event. It is hoped also that the experience will make us qualified to apply for the Olympics Games in the near future. We deeply hope that our people will do their best to host the 2009 World Games. Because Taiwan worked very hard to win the bidding for the games, we will show the whole world that Taiwan has all that it takes to host the international event. By hosting the World Games, we will let the world see Taiwan and let it shine a big light on our country. We believe the flame will be stronger and stronger, because Taiwan's actual ability cannot be ignored and Taiwanese's efforts are obvious to the world. Trust me, we can make it. Taiwan, Go Go Go!

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we went into the Zuoying National Sports Training Center, we repeatedly interrupted the contestants and coaches in the course of their training. But they would still listen to our questions, and they explained many things to us patiently. They even used their resting time to answer our questions. In school, the teachers devoted all their energies to direct us so that we could be familiar with the work mode in short time. And the teachers also helped us with the webpage design, car and other facilities, so that we could put in our efforts without fearing disturbance in the rear. We wanted to give special thanks to these enthusiastic people.  Again, thank you very much. The community has really helped and come together to help us realize our goals.  Our project has also helped the community get closer to the high school, since they can know some of the things that high school students do through the project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

Our people were so proud whenever the flag of Taiwan was fluttering in a foreign country and the national anthem was sung around the Athens’ arena.

We also discovered the thorny side and heavy pressure behind those successful people when we were making the project. Maybe our work is hard, but the result is sweet. So we want to give extreme thanks to those people who helped us in completing the project; the City and the country. We also hope that our project can speak for those people who have devoted their lives to sports as a way of promoting not only their own careers, but also the image and glory of their homeland, Taiwan.
