Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Si-Lin village is located in Wan-Rong township, where is one of 13 towns and townships in Hualien county. It is also the further north village in Wan-Rong township. Its east neighbouring town is Fong Lin town; the central mountain range lies along side of the west part of Silin village; Si-Lin village borders Chien-Chin village in the south with River Chin-Shui, and So-Fong town in the north with River Chi-Ya-Kan. Taroko (Truko) aborigines accounts for the majority of the residents of Si-Lin. The name of the village originally came from the shape of River Chi-Ya- Kan. Si lin village and surrounding area used to be a hunting area which owned by the local leader Ping under the Japanese regime between 1895-1945. One day he was on his way to go hunting, he found out the river and surrounded area looked like a tree hole (La Earn Ger Horn Nie in Taroko language). Therefore he named this area as La-earn Ger-horny in Taroko language or tree hole in English. After the Second World War (In1946), the nationalist government took the control from Japanese government and undertook the regional adjustment proposal to modify the regional structure. As a result, Tree hole was re-named to Si-Lin village until the present.

2. Summary of Our Project

This project is dedicated to look up the story of local elite, Teacher Tsung-Sheng Chang, in Si-Lin village and how he contributes his efforts to the community. The team will also do our best to explore the inter-relation between grandpa Chang and Si- Lin village and how he acts as an educational leader in the community.

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:21-50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

Participant students are mainly fourth graded students. Most of them have got little or non experience before. Therefore, everything including basic computer theory and introduction of the Cyber fair should start from the beginning.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Cyber fair is an interesting web design competition. This enables us to learn about some knowledge and communication skills through discussions and interviews in this project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

At the beginning of the stage, we felt very nervous when we conducted an interview. However, after having interviewed some local residents, we have built up confidence to do the interviews and ask questions.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

During the period of doing this project, Participant students have learnt about how to use some computer based drawing software and the use of digital camera to complete it.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

In order to make our parents more clear what we are doing, Teacher Yin-Jay(Steven) Dou has organised some introduction seminars for pupil’s parents to explain all the procedures and necessities at the beginning of the project. Since then, parents have realised about our project and been supportive toward this project; when we need some help, they became more willing to give our hand.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

During the reaches for the project, we have got a better understanding of our community and related issues such as local leader, history, and pride of the village.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

During the research, Not only teachers at the school gave us much help but also the chief of village and our parents got involved in this project. In other word, everyone in the community involves in this project.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We felt very nervous before the start of the project because we had not got this experience before. After having received the encouragements and assistances from teachers, we became more confident and realised that we would make something better for Silin village and make other people more understood of our community.
