Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The Zhongcheng Rd. of the Shilin Dist. in Taipei City, located between the sixth section of Zhongshan N. Rd. and Tianmu E. Rd., presents fairly special features of diverse industries and living styles. One day when visiting the School-History Room, we found some old photos of this road. And that motivated us to study more about the transitions of the Zhongcheng Rd. following the passage of time.

2. Summary of Our Project

We hope this project will become a learning activity for most of the students. In addition, through our study, the whole school members will participate and get to know this road that we closely related. Thus, associated with the local features, we would like to find out the relativity between industrial changes and life style along the Zhongcheng Rd.

The Zhongcheng Rd. is very familiar to the Taipei residents. Except the well-known department store of Dayeh Takashimaya being here for more than ten years, the Zhongcheng Rd. changes its view constantly. From paddy fields and wetlands, flourished beer houses to now, they all marked down the developments and features of the road. And every bit of those is waiting us to discover.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1. Difficulty of collecting historical data In the beginning, we thought collecting data was simple. But we were wrong. When we started to do this project, we found it so hard to get the historical data, especially the old photos. Neither the experienced schoolteachers nor the local government had the photos we needed. Finally, while interviewing the local elderly people, we were able to obtain those precious historical photos.

2. Team communication and cooperation Every member of our team had a busy schedule. It was not easy for us to get together and worked on this project. Besides, we still had to find time to investigate and interview people. Thanks to our teachers for spending a lot of break time directing us to finish all the works.

3. Different schedules of the interviewers In our project, we had to visit and interview many local stores. It was quite complicated to make the appointment at the appropriate time. The time should be during the open hours of the stores, and not on our class time. In addition, we had to write down the tape script after we recorded during the interviewing, and then use the computer to type.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Any road that you walk through leaves the trace.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

1. The language part --- After collecting raw data, we had to do a lot of reading, analyzing and organization. Afterward, we had to write reports and do the oral reports. In the process of doing this project, we actually promoted our own language competence. 2. The methodological part --- To complete our project, we applied lots of methods such as using the community resources, interviewing local people, drawing our own maps and visiting the historical sites, etc. 3. The art part --- We learned how to make a recording and photographing, draw pictures on paper and on screen, arrange the layout of the web pages, etc. 4. The social part --- Through teamwork, communication, interview and visiting, we really learned how to cooperate and make better interaction with society.

Besides, this project really motivated our abilities of thinking and reflection; encouraged us to find problems, analyze and solve them. Through continuously exchanging of ideas, we finally completed this project and learned a lot.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

The following information tools being used in doing our project: 1. Camcorder and digital camera – to record the images 2. Tablet and scanner – to process the photos 3. Tape recorder – to record our interview 4. Computer software (Word, PhotoImpact, Frontpage, Medi@show) – to do the web page 5. Library – to find the relative information 6. Investigating on the spot

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The place in our project, the Zhongcheng Rd., located between two important streets--the Zhongshan N. Rd. and the Tianmu E. Rd. We didn’t find any study about this place before. Most of the studies we found chose historic sites or other specialties as their topics. And that’s the reason we chose this place as the topic of our project.

After finishing the interview with the owner of the beer house, we put it in our web page. And whoever entering our website will know that, in the old days, loads of beer houses existed along the Zhongcheng Rd. When they feel content, they will tell their friends to visit our web page and get to know much more about the historic transitions and characteristics of this road. Besides, we, by doing this research, not only comprehended more about our hometown, but also built up new relations and interactions with the interviewees, such as Li-Ba House, Hua-Nan Commercial Bank, the dress store and the beer house etc. Furthermore, we cared about our place with a different sentiment.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Since we’ve introduced the Zhongcheng Rd. thoroughly, we will spread up our web page to the school’s website and Internet for everyone can see the beauty and mystery of the road. Another important lesson we learned in doing this project is that if anyone of us didn’t do our part according to the schedule, the whole project fell behind and won’t be perfect anymore. Thus, when the due time was coming, like ants on the hot pot, everybody felt a lot of pressure and was extremely nervous. Because of idleness, we had to simplify some of the work. And that made us really regret for not doing our best.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Students (60%) 1.Search the data 2.Tidy up and edit the data 3.Contact to the person to be visited 4.Draft the content for interviewing 5.Record the interview 6.Design the web page 7.Draft the web page configuration 8.Write & organize the tape scripts and documents, and write the weekly diary 9.Process the images 10.Process the photos 11.Make the web page 12.Design the on-line test questions 13.Fill in the records and write the progress reports

Guided teachers (25%) 1.Edit and complete the web page.Host 1~2 meetings weekly 2.Assign the work and coordinate 3.Provide help to contact the interviewee 4.Guide to draft the web page configuration 5.Teach related knowledge of the information tools 6.Take pictures and tape images 7.Sift the photos and video 8.Guide to process the images 9.Guide the art of the web page 10.Final confirm and correct

Local residents (15%) 1.Provide the data 2.Accept to visit 3.Provide photos 4.Provide consultation

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process of doing this project, we learned so much about the yesterday of Zhongcheng Rd., and the characteristics of various industries. Although having lived here for years since we were very young, we didn’t know about our neighborhood thoroughly before doing this project. From now on, whoever asks us about our hometown, we can tell him/her about the features of the Zhongcheng Rd. in every detail.
