Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in the north-west of the island, Taoyuan is the second largest city in Taiwan. In the early days, the city was called “Hu-Mao-Jhuang.” Then the residents here planted peach trees at the rim of the beautiful village, and therefore, the previous name “Hu-Mao-Jhuang” was substituted to “Taozaiyuan.” For this reason, the flower known as the symbol of Taoyuan is the peach blossom, in another common word, ”Tao-Zai.” The person we are going to introduce is the one who established the wonderful Min-Sheng Healthcare system in Taoyuan area, and also the one who called himself as “The son of Taoyuan”- a really good person, neighbor, and doctor - Min-Sheng Yang .

2. Summary of Our Project

We’ve never been so touched until we got to take a look at Ming- Sheng Healthcare and its fringe benefits brought to the residents here in Taouyan City. Min-Sheng’s legendary biography of founding hospitals, being a nice doctor, and his motto “One aims for the far future!” have really cast a glamour on us. So, we decided to introduce this kind, localized doctor to the whole world. We’d like to spread and share his success and philanthropies worldwide. We even hope that his story will be a precious experience, positive example and also such a strongly fresh, new power for everybody to follow.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

At school: Each class requires a computer set; 88 classes are included. Three computer classes and one language lab require 168 computer sets with Internet access in total. Main equipment: Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz Server Operation System: FreeBSD 5.3 Apache Web Server PHP&MySQ Data Bank Server

At home: We use different ADSL to upload data and to look up some information

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

(1) Time pressure We are all students in junior high school, and therefore the limit of time could always be a difficulty to us. We not only had to deal with the schoolings in school, but also the homework in cram schools. However, doing the project is a big pleasure to everyone. We spared time to complete the missions, for example, break during the lunch time and holidays to get together for the meeting.

(2) Difficulty on contacting we have many different kinds of tools to help everyone contact with each other. For instant, e-mails, cell phones…etc. Sometimes we don’t have time to contact with the secretaries, but fortunately, we have many kind volunteers to do the touch for us.

(3)Difficulties during the interview process To express our sincerity, we did our best to interview the person with all the members in the group. However, most Yang’s friends and employees are doctors or really famous people, their schedules are usually very busy, which made it more difficult to finish the interviews at the best time. We also get to consider whom to ask and where to have the interview. We want to have correrct data, so it’s necessary to prepare all the possible questions beforehand. We’ve learned how to make good use of our time with the best efficiency.

(4)Traffic problem We used the particular resources in Taoyuan~ the free buses, which saved a lot of time and money. Besides, we have some kind drivers in our voluntary group too.

(5)Difficulties on technical tools When having the interviews or refining the photos, we didn’t know how to edit or show it properly. Fortunately, we got to grab some help from the teachers and some of the tools like MP3s, cameras, Photoshop…etc to finish the web and show some of the pictures in the best way.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We would never find that there’s such lots of problems until we got to discuss the issues deeply. Finally, we beat the challenges with our brains and that could be a really big chance to everyone who engaged in the CyberFair. We all got touched by President Yang’s great spirits-the passion to sacrifice, to care, to spread love and to warmness to everybody in the society. With the faith in our mind-What is taken from the society should be used in the interests of the society, we’ll strive to do our best and share things done by this good doctor with each person in the world.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our research fits the follow curriculum standards: First, students search for resources to share with other students from either the Internet or other outside materials, not just learning things from the text books. Second, students are willing to participate in artivities that help improve English abilities. Third, it helps students broaden students’ global view.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

(1) Telephones, cell phones, e-mails: We used them to make the appointments before having the meeting and discuss the ideas about the project on the phones.

(2) Computers, notebooks : We used computers for information from the CyberFair center, and also the information about Min-Sheng Healthcare System. Designing the webs, uploading the reports…etc. are included as well. (3) Books, magazines, journals. We got a lot of useful information from Yang’s biography and Min-Sheng Healthcare System’s newspapers.

(4) Tape recorders: We used tape recorders to help us record the content of each interview.

(5) Digital camera: We used digital cameras to take pictures and make it easier to edit all the pictures on the computer. (6) Portable hard disc we used them to save the web pages and information. (7) Scanners: To scan photos, and made it easier to edit the pictures.

(8) Copy machines: We used copy machines to copy articles with information we obtained from books, magazines and newspapers about our project.

(9) Software: We had different kinds of software to help us get the web done, such as FrontPage2004, Photoshop7.0, ACDsee, Word2004 and Flash2004.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Min-Sheng Healthcare System is a well-organized medical organization in Taoyuan. We’ve heard about Yang before deciding the project. What we really want is to share the doctor’s story and his personality to everybody in the world by Internet. We not only wrote things about Yang, but also did many other things. We made interview records, accumulation and information analysis, and participated in the activities of helping those who we should care for. These processes recorded our contacts with Yang bit by bit. When having conversations with Yang’s wife, we all were wondering and amazed at the great passion Yang has put in his career, family, routines and the society. We really hope that through the CyberFair, we are able to present Yang’s affection for the society, and we also hope that his story and experience can not only be an advice to others, but also arouse each person’s philanthropy in the current epoch.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Min-Sheng Healthcare System spreads in different sections of Taoyuan, and therefore, almost every person knows about Min-Sheng Healthcare System. But for Min-Sheng Yang and his motivation to establish the medical organizations are rarely known in most people’s memories. To execute the plan of the topical research, we not only interviewed Ming-Sheng Yang in person and the relavent people around, but also provided the residents of the community with a complete introduction to Yang Min-Sheng and the motivation he holds for.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We got a lot of help from our community as well as our school. First of all, we have to thank Mrs. Su-Yue Hu, a teacher from Taoyuan Junior High School, who helped us translate the Chinese web into English version and provide ideas. Without her generous help, we can’t even attend the international CyberFair. Mrs. Siou-Li Syu, a teacher from the computer center, helped us with the technological problems. With her help, we got to know more about CyberFair and things like how to use some of the particular software. Moremore, we could never do such a wonderful job without the help from the voluntary staff including Jyu-Sian Li, Yong Ci Jhai, Yu-Hong Jiang, Han-Bin Huang. They helped us photograph, shoot and edit webs, overcoming the problems that we had in making the rotating display. We also have our greatest thanks to all the staff and students in Taoyuan Junior High School for the enjoyment of the interviews and participation in the CyberFair competition and questionnaire. At last, we have special thanks to all of our parents, who really supported us and gave us every kind of resource to get the project done. Without any of their help, our project wouldn’t have been completed. We’d like to show the most sincere appreciation to them – “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!” – That’s what we all have got to say!!

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process of interviewing, We learned that President Yang has always been holding a thankful faith. He appreciates his parents’ cultivaton and the siblings’ help. When he was still a student, the teacher’s generosity and care helped him finish his studying courses. All the events were remembered in his mind very deeply, all of which had made President Yang’s mind full of appreciation to the society as well. With the conviction in his mind – What is taken from the society is used in the interests of the society - , Yang set up Min-sheng Healthcare. His passion and care which not only helps medical patients, but also extends the welfares, letting more people who really need help have the support from the society. We learned a lot from President Yang because of his insistence, firmness and passion for his work. President Yang isn’t afraid of challenges and he always tries hard to overcome all possible difficulties in persuing his goals. We believe that everyone has wonderful memories of being helped by others. From the CyberFair, we would like to introduce this good doctor to you, and bring love and care to everyone by this chance. Hopefully, one day in the future, our society will be swarmed with generosity.
